Not to help perpetuate this feud :)) but isn't Quids saying that you'll be beaten by any Tom, Dick or Harriet in La Manga where, I am guessing, Spurs are having some "warm weather training"?

Just like last time eh?

There is a reason that Liverpool are seeded high in the Champions League and above Barcelone. It's cos actually, they are really quite good in European two leg ties.

I think all 4 English teams have extremely tough Champions League matches in 2 weeks time. I have to admit that if Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea all get knocked out then I will be delighted.

If I had to put money one of the 4 reaching the QF, then it would be Chelsea beating Juventus.

I'm not at all sure Revie belongs in such august company! But Clough yes.

Yeah that's right Don Revie was a cheating bastard and was a runner-up more times than he was a winner and he was possibly the worst England manager we've ever had who buggered off to the United Arab Emirates when offered a fat cheque and the going got tough.

All right, I'll rise to the bait. Don guided Leeds to two Football League First Division titles, one FA Cup, one League Cup, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cup titles, one Football League Second Division title and one Charity Shield. He also guided them to three more FA Cup Finals, one more Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final and one Cup Winners' Cup Final.

He built the team of the era which went on to the European Cup final (under Jimmy Armfield) the season after he left despite Cloughie nearly ballsing the whole thing up. He was Manager of the Year in 1969, 1970, and 1972.

That Leeds team is as good as any to have graced English football. None of the bribery allegations have ever been proven and tbh, even if he was, it seems to have been fairly routine in those days. He deserves to be alongside the pantheon of footballing greats. He took an unfashionable, lower league team and moulded it into a European giant. Leeds were mediocre before Revie. He set the benchmark.

And Jah, there's no way he's the worst English manager ever. Ok, he didn't qualify for the 76 Euro Champs but he had a 48% win record. Taylor and McLaren (to name but two) were certainly worse. Venables and Keegan also had worse win stats. He just never replicated his success with England that he'd had with Leeds.

Pro-Leeds rant ends.

Home advantage in the second leg should mean that Utd and 'pool go thru barring a 1st leg disaster.

L'arse are capable of getting a good lead to defend in Rome, but can't see Chelski going thru over two legs, they got turned over the last time they were in Italy by Rome and Juve are a better team, revenge of the Tinkerman!...

Sorry but, although agreeing Revie did an impressive job with Leeds, the fact is Liverpool at that time more deserve the "team of the era" accolade. Leeds never won the European Cup and had something of a reputation as "chokers". Clough on the other hand did it all twice with both Derby & Nottingham Forest.

So your dig at Revie was that he was too loyal by only achieving with one club? Pah.

Clough went wherever he thought they'd bend over for him.

I'd say 1970-5 Leeds were the team of the era (early 70s)....but I know 'pool fans might disagree.

>So your dig at Revie was that he was too loyal by only achieving with one club? Pah.<

He did not achieve that much for Leeds though did he, in terms of major trophies won? Leeds did have this tendencey to fall at the final hurdle - hence their successes in the Fairs Cup - the Losers' competition. I'm the first to admit that if Revie was a failure I wish Sheffield United had failed like that during the same period! The thing with Clough is until he split with Taylor and went to Leeds he had a record of achievement with a whole string of clubs, from turning Hartlepool around to winning european trophies with two distinctly unfashionable sides.

During the 10 seasons Revie managed Leeds United in the top flight (1964 to 1974), Leeds United won 7 major trophies and were Runners-up 10 times. That is pretty hot stuff - no other Manager gets anywhere near that record. If only winning counts, then tell me another Manager during this period who won more major trophies than Revie during this time frame?

Don Revie was a great manager whether you liked his methods or not the record books are pretty convincing. This was at a time when money was more evenly spread as can be seen by the fact that during this 10 year period, 7 different clubs won the Championship.

Still not good enough to beat Barca at the moment, they would kill LIverpool at the moment. Just pray Liverpool don't get drawn against them, cos actually at the moment Barca are light years ahead of Liverpool.

The thing is with Leeds United at that time is that they were universally loathed for the gamesmanship and over physical dirty play. There was Norman "Bites yer legs" Hunter, Billy Bremner who was a horrible little ginger-haired Scottish terrier and Jack Charlton who used to keep a little black book in which he would he note down players names that he would deliberately want to hurt or injure.

All before my time but weren't all teams blessed with thugs during this era? Is this the same reason people have a dislike for Man United - as who'll ever forget the mid-nineties United team when you had likes of Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Eric Cantona physically confronting supporters in the crowd never mind leave stud marks all over the opposition - or Peter Schemichal with his less than cordial race relations with Ian Wright.

Anyway, another point about Revie, did he really bribe officials during his time at Leeds as some have suggested? I find that odd considering they lost more finals than they won, as surely that is the time to bribe a ref, no?

    • Yes, because of course there were no violent robberies in the olden days. Pretty much no crime happened at all I believe through the entire Victorian era.
    • Hi all, Im a Southwark council leaseholder and live downstairs in a ground floor flat, there is one flat above me, it's a house with individual front doors leading from the street into the shared pathway. My neighbour told me he has had a ring doorbell installed, no discussion as to how I would feel being on camera everytime I go in and out or in my front garden. I was told it's only for deliveries and doesn't record and only activates when pressed, however I don't know this and I feel really uncomfortable everytime I'm out in garden or on doorstep talking to people. Everytime I walk in/out, it lights up and in the eve it has a  infra red  light. Now I've read up that as he said its only for deliveries, he could set it so it only activates when pressed, however it activates with its motion sensor. Had he said to me about getting it installed, I could have had the opportunity to ask about it recording etc but nothing except it's being installed and when I arrived home it was there. I don't like being horrible to people however I feel I have not been considered in his decision and I feel very uncomfortable as, some times I have to stand on doorstep to get signal for my mobile and I really don't like the idea of being watched and listened to. Has anyone got any advice as I'm beginning to get angry as I've asked about it once and was told it only activates when pressed. I believe this is not true. I know southwark council say you need to ask permission to make sure the neighbours are OK with it, I don't really want to go down that road but I don't know how to approach the subject again. They also put a shed approx 3 foot from my back room window, these places are built so my window faces their rear garden and there upstairs window  faces mine. They said it's there temporarily, that was over a year ago and it does affect the light, plus I'm hoping to sell up soon and the view from window is mainly a dark brown shed. When I've mentioned this, I was told they have no where else to put it, whereas originally they said its only temporary, Also the floorboards above are bare and I get woke early morning and at night, the thudding is so bad my light shakes and window rattles, so I mentioned this and asked if they have rugs, I was told when they get the boards re sanded they will get rugs, I should have asked if they could get rugs and just take them up when boards being done, which I would have done had it been me living above someone, their attitude was I can just put up with it until they are ready. so they had the floor boards done, and the workmen was hammering screws, yes screws, in the floorboards, I spoke to workmen to ask how much longer and they said yes, are using screws to make less noise! I could hear the cordless screwdriver, not an issue but for every screw there were at least 8 whacks, the owners had gone out to avoid the noise  so I  spoke to workmen as the noise was unbearable, the sanding, not an issue at all, people need to get things done to their home and I'm fine that on occasions there will be temporary noise. now I have a nice crack on my bedroom ceiling, I mentioned this to owner but no response, he said there were alot of loose floorboards and it will be much better now, not so noisy, as though I don't know the difference between squeaking floor boards and thudding, and nothing was mentioned re the crack or that they now have rugs, which if it were me, I'd be trying to resolve the issue so we can get on with feeling happy in our homes. so I'm feeling it's a total lack of consideration. these places are old and Edwardian and I've lived here over 40 years, had 4 different neighbours and it's only now the noise of thudding is really bad and the people before had floorboards but nothing like this. As you can probably tell I'm really wound up and I don't want to end up exploding at them, I've always got on with neighbours and always said if there's a problem with my dog, pls let me know, always tell me, however I feel it's got to the point where I say something and I'm fobbed off. I know I should tell them but I'm angry, perhaps I should write them a letter. Any suggestions greatly appreciated and thank you for reading my rant.
    • Sadly, the price we now all pay for becoming a soft apologetic society.
    • Exactly the same thing happened to me a few years back; they were after my Brompton. Luckily there were only 3 of them so I managed to get away and got a woman to call the police, then they backed off, but not after having hit me in the back of the head first. Police said next time just give them what they want, but I sure as hell wasn't just going to hand over my bike to them!
