The secret ingredient that turns nectar into honey is bee ?spit.?

Chemicals in the bees? saliva help change the nectar into sugars.

The nectar/saliva mixture is then stored in the beeswax comb by the workers.

I heard someone on the radio say this morning, 'Well, I've never heard a carrot scream'. Rather arrogant to assume that because it doesn't register to our limited range of senses, it can't exist. According to some Buddhists, at a microbiological level, a salad sandwich is carnage (vegage?).

On the Food Prog on R4 this week it was said that mushrooms are somewhere between animal and vegetable, which is thought-provoking.

I guess a less absurd example might be breastfeeding - which vegans usually think is OK, presumably because it's voluntary.

    • I know people won’t have any sympathy but the SEND challenge was brought up when taxing parents who have opted for independent school to meet a child’s SEND needs. Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
