James you're right re "Bender in a Bun".

I used to find it hilarious, although my mum and dad never did and would often wonder why I was giggling at the menu.

You've got me reminiscing now about Brown Derbys and Rum Ba-bas. Maybe Wimpy could relaunch and target the upwardly thrusting power couples and Boden catalogue-reading families who now frequent this corner of South East London.

I see Burger King now sell an "angus" and fries as opposed to plain old burgers. Genius!

How's about a wi-fi area called Clicker Bocker Glory.

>>there used to be a Poppins too.. anyone remember that?<<

Oh yes! Years and years ago when I tried to make a point of sampling every greasy spoon in the area, I rashly ordered gammon steak and pinepple in Poppins. When it arrived the "pineapple" turned out to be half a tin of cold chunks poured over a thin round pink slab....

On the subject of Bender in a Bun, surely it wasn't that long ago that Wimpy also advised us to 'Chomp my Chunkynormous'? Also a convincing recommendation.

On that basis, perhaps a petition to return this doyen of popular culture and eclectic Britishness back to our craven High Street?

I shall contact them directly.

Indeed I do. Down in Peckham. Used got there with my Mum and Bon Marche in Brixton too. They were considered rather posh in those days.

The best burger joint EVER was a Wimpy in a village called Milford near Stafford. Wimpy had a small white shed next to a big pub. Two ladies of a cetain age cooked the burger on a hot plate before your very eyes. Many, many, many years ago when I was in my late teens in my home town of Cannock there no after-pub eateries (except a place that sold those tinned burgers that were heated in boiling water). So we used to pile into a clapped out Morris Marina and head for Milford.

It was still there a couple of years ago and as I was passing I had to have a cheeseburer. Oh lordy, they were as good as ever.

So, if you ever find yourself in the area. Drop in to Milford, they have lovely tree covered hills and nice pub and a fantastic Wimpy.

Of course there was also Uncle Sams in Brighton, but that is another story.

thanks, got this from http://www.fleurets.com

    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
    • The Dutch are addicted to New Year fireworks and spent €130million this year on them. However,  sales to individuals will be banned as from this year and celebrations will be organised by local and city councils. I have Dutch friends and for them, this can’t come soon enough. However, at least there it’s concentrated  on one night. Here, it’s never ending, any excuse to make a noise is seized upon with gusto. In addition to the annual celebrations, add birthdays, weddings, engagements, divorces, christenings, BBQs, etc etc. I dare say you can funerals to that list as well. Yesterday it started mid-afternoon and just carried on until the early hours. In the past, I’ve been woken up at 4am. Anyyone who doesn’t like it can go hang and you can ignore completely the  effects on people’s animals and wildlife. Don’t hold your breath about anything being done here, however.
