At present roads off Forest Hill, Peckham Rye have seen a rise in thefts of scooters/mopeds with most being taken overnight. If you know anyone who lives in this area or you own one yourself please think about ways of securing your bike and property marking options easily seen online to act as a deterrent. Also for those wishing to spend some money obtain a Tracker.

Over the years I've noticed, come Spring and Summer, it appears to be a "thing" for groups of late teens-early 20 males to steal a moped each and drive around the city for the day/night. From the way they ride them, it's pretty obvious they don't own them. I know a few people who have also just given up travelling by moped due to the repeated number of times they are stolen, rode the hell out of then abandoned, or never turn up, not to mention having petrol stolen all the time. With almost zero visible Police on the streets and no CCTV in the area, it's sadly a paradise for thieves and burglars around here.

I saw 2 mopeds with 2 sets of youths as said last night come down Lordship Lane then turn left up Ashbourne Road at about 11.35pm. They match the earlier description.

I am a m'bike owner with a bike chained up and I'm always aware of little numpties looking suspicious at that time of night!

I had my scooter stolen last weekend from the underground parking in Solomons Passage in SE15. Somehow thieves managed to get through the electric gate, which is operated by the key fobs. There are quite a few CCTV cameras so there should be some useful footage for the police. Just in case if anyone has seen it it's midnight blue Piaggio Vespa GTS 250cc reg OU08 DJK. Thanks

We have bought locks with alarms which hopefully will wake us up if an attempted theft occurs in the evening - accompanied by 2 massive bike locks - I resent having to do all of this as we have all worked to pay for (and insure) these bikes. I am so sorry for anyone that has had their bike stolen it is so upsetting and then ones insurance gets so high it seems impossible to justify owning a motorbike in London.

Hopefully the raid as above will help a bit.

Sad times

This was discussed in detail at the East Dulwich Ward meeting Wednesday night Barry Road Church. East Dulwich Councillors to lead on private anchor points in front gardens ( please contact your councillors for these Asaph they're available I believe for free!) and also more street concentrated anchor points like the one where Lordship Lane and Northcross meet at the Pub

Sorry to hear about bikes being stolen. In 4 years I have had two bikes stolen, one attempted theft and a front wheel stolen.

So I now park on driveway with ground anchor and D-Lock through front wheel and CCTV that covers the area

I use Almax ground anchor and chain

http://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/index.asp?pg=1

It has been almost one year since last theft and can only assume its because of the ground anchor/cctv

I am lucky that I can park using ground anchor otherwise I would look into tracker/alarm

If its not bolted down two guys can pick up scooter and load into a van in about 30 seconds and then work on any locks you have.

    • London doesn’t have a lot of Argentinian places specialising in empanadas, which suggests demand isn’t that great. There are many neighbourhoods with none at all or even nearby.  So for a mini-chain like Chango (several branches in SW London) to open here where there’s already a well established family run place doing the same feels a bit off.  I’ll be giving Chacarero my ongoing custom.
    • This is so helpful, everyone, thank you. @green bean Yes we have just (as of yesterday) installed the same external blinds you mention! We already had blackout blinds and we now have the external awnings too. Of course that will guarantee the end of the summer sunshine but I can see that they're going to be helpful as they let the light through but not the glare of the sun - I'm fed up of working in darkness with both the blackout blinds closed on sunny days. We'll see how we go with those for a bit but I reckon we'll get a couple of quotes from the other recommendations in case we end up going the whole hog. @penfold Love the idea of getting solar+batteries to offset the electricity usage so will look into that.  Thanks, all.
    • Yes Sally, I've emailed him several times since Xmas. I don't contact Councillors frequently but when I've done so over the years, I've found them generally engaged and responsive. It's unprecedented to just be ignored and, regardless of the query I'm raising, that's worrying from the point of view of  our local democratic voice. Its a Councillors role to represent local people! A different thread on here made reference to a lack of response from one of our ward councillors and, since there are only two, I'm guessing it's the same one. I'm following up my own concern separately but I'm asking on here about whether others have had the same problem. I'd like to think it's a one-off but, increasingly, I suspect it's not. Hope that gives a bit more context!
