Quids, technically I suppose it ought to be groupy but it just don't look right.

I just asked my much more pedantic other half how he would spell it:

Mr Asset: "ie"

Me: " why?"

Mr Asset: "because it's a noun"

Still wrong methinks - "ies" is a plural 'noun', me being a groupy is singular. The slang term is grammatically wrong. go and tell Mr asset....

I'm not sure Quids.

'Y' is normally appended to nouns to turn them into adjectives. The consequent word means 'having the condition or quality' of the original noun.

Hence a 'groupy' person, would be a person with the quality of a group. Not quite this context.

In 'groupie', I believe that the 'ie' is to signify a dimunitive (reductive) quality - as in 'one part of a group, not the whole'.

Same dimmunitive quality found in laddie, lassie, hoodie, mountie, junkie, oldie, aussie, commie, goalie etc.

If all else fails, go for common usage. 'Groupy' won't find any references to Groupies, as the word was first used in the lates 60s in pop literature, and was spelt groupie.

Its a question of chronology. First there were groupies. Working backwards, some social commentator needed a term to describe the singular member of a gang of groupies. Thus groupie.

Its not a very big pub so look for the largest group in the place. We also normally tell the bar staff who we are, and in previous forum drinks threads there are links to photos.

Also - if you look for a blonde woman attached to a large glass of Pinot Grigio - that will be Georgia :))
