With Liverpool trying to achieve the impossible comeback tomorrow night, it has prompted me to think of great sporting comebacks we might all think of as the best.

I'll start with:

1999 - France beat the All Blacks in the Rugby World Cup, having trailed the mighty All Blacks by 14 points at the end of the first half. It was one of the greatest rugby games ever.

The greatest sporting comeback ever was the pool competition I had with my buddy Sandro last year. He was a better player than me & was way in front, but I managed to beat him by abt 20 games ( we played abt 300, I think ) It was amazing, Sandro, if you are reading this- "IN YOUR FACE!!!"

Istanbul Champions League Final in 2005... when Liverpool trailed 3-0 at half time to AC Milan. This was a Milan team still very much in their pomp and who even had Diego Maradona drooling at half time after a perfect exhibition of football.

At half time as Liverpool players sobbed into their cuppas - the travelling 50,000 Liverpool supporters sang You'll Never Walk Alone. This most famous of anthems slowly built from hope into belief and galvanised every man, woman, child and footballer wearing a red shirt that night in the Atuturk Stadium.

Liverpool picked themselves up off the canvas and took on the Italian supermen and in 6 minutes of madness scored 3 goals to tie the score 3-3. The shock waves stunned the Italians and they crumbled in the penalty shoot that followed. Liverpool won the European Cup (the most famous and most important trophy in Club football), as once again Liverpool became masters of Europe.

That is the greatest sports comeback of all time.

Two VERY predictable posts in here, although Matthew did beat me to it.

Ha ha, what Anna said.

What a load of romantic nonsense. AC went to sleep for 7 minutes, and Gerrard dragged Liverpool back in to it. Don't get me wrong, it was an incredible comeback, but lets not over do it.

That said, by the time it got to 90 minutes, Liverpool looked the team who were going to win it!

An Irish one:

1993 All Ireland Semi Final - Derry trailed Dublin at Croke Park by 5 points at half time but a fantastic second half performance by Derry saw them roll over Dublin in the second half, don't recall Dublin scoring any points. Joe Brolly was fantastic and hardly missed in the second half. Derry won the final with ease. Still my favourite GAA game.

TLS had it right/ The third Test at Haedingly 1981. I was at sea and we only received a 3 minute news update each day - and that depended on weather and sea conditions. We received a partially garbled message with the news ".... and Willis takes 8 wickets for ......." It wasn't until three weeks later arriving alongside in Gibraltar that I was able to learn the result.`One of my biggest disappointments was not to have seen this match live.

good game, but seamus darby against kerry has to be a stand out, however for sheer comebacks, armagh 4 points down against kerry in 2002 at half time having just missed a pen to bring them back into the game, and then trailing by 5 points for the early stages of the second half only to come through and win by one and hold kerry scoreless for the last 20 mins of the game in to the bargain, now thats a come back.

Lester Piggott:

The jailbird soars again

In 1987, having retired from racing two years earlier and switched to training at his Eve Lodge Stables, Lester Piggot was jailed for three years for tax irregularities and eventually served 366 days before being released on parole. In 1990, having been stripped of his OBE on his release from jail, he stunned the racing world by returning to competitive racing at the age of 55, and crowned an extraordinary comeback by winning the Breeders? Cup Mile on Royal Academy. As if to prove it was no fluke, he won his final Classic two years later when he took the 2,000 Guineas on Rodrigo de Triano. Piggott finally retired for good two years later, having ridden nine Derby winners and been champion jockey on 11 occasions.

Have to agree.

I watched that match, and was taunting my Man U supporting mate, by text. When The Baby Faced Assasin scored and sealed the game I realised I'd probably witnesses one of the greatest sporting moments ever.

Mind you, Munich hitting the woodwork twice didn't help their cause!

    • This is a remarkable interpretation of history. Wikipedia (with more footnotes and citations than you could shake a shitty stick at sez: The austerity programme was initiated in 2010 by the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government. In his June 2010 budget speech, Osborne identified two goals. The first was that the structural current budget deficit would be eliminated to "achieve [a] cyclically-adjusted current balance by the end of the rolling, five-year forecast period". The second was that national debt as a percentage of GDP would fall. The government intended to achieve both of its goals through substantial reductions in public expenditure.[21] This was to be achieved by a combination of public spending cuts and tax increases amounting to £110 billion.[26] Between 2010 and 2013, the Coalition government said that it had reduced public spending by £14.3 billion compared with 2009–10.[27] Growth remained low, while unemployment rose. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_government_austerity_programme From memory, last time around they were against the LTNs and competing with the Tories to pick up backlash votes - both failed.
