ps this is a photo of a flu virus, pretty amazing looking little bug(ger)

They're so pretty. I bet California's panicking. Doesn't take much to panic them Americans but specially on the west coast where - without legal and illegal Mexicans - the already dying California economy would be on its knees. Now what they gunno do!
I'm currently in NZ and took my kids to a music group this morning... the lady at the door said she was surprised to see so many people out "what with this swine flu and everything". NZ media is making a really big deal of it, people seem genuinely scared. Maybe I'm being too relaxed?!

Thanks for your input! ;-)

Best,

I saw a couple of blokes selling novelty swine flu masks on the way to work today, 2 for a tenner. NO JOKE!

I also think its a big opportunity for those cheeky northern monkeys Oasis to write a new song. They've pretty much wailed the word 'sunshinnneeeee' to death, so why not chuck in 'swwwwiiiiineeeeee' for a bit of variety.

World Health Organisation has raised its pandemic threat level to the maximum 5 - the next level 6 is when they acknowledge we have a pandemic.

Apparently we are fortunate that we are entering summer and it may die out in summer but it could then resurrect itself in winter.

We are however better prepared than we have ever been, so lets hope it does not materialise.

I have not taken this seriously before today.

It's a timely reminder for us to be more courteous when sneezing and coughing around others, by using a tissue, and for us to improve our personal hygiene. Large numbers of blokes don't wash their hands after the lav, at least according to my evidence, and those that do tend to just run their fingers under the cold water tap. A fifteen-second wash with hand-hot water and soap, rinsing well after washing the finger tips and in between the digits and the wrists should get rid of a lot of dirt and germs. I wash my hands before eating and after being on the bus/tube if I can, as well as after being in the gym and going to the toilet.

What hope do we have when the WHO is basing its threat levels on a Spinal Tap exemplar?

NZ has now made an anti-flu drug "Tamiflu" available over the counter to anyone showing symptoms of flu. $75. Apparently will only be given to people who the pharmacist deems to be showing genuine flu symptoms, yet they suggest anyone showing flu symptoms should stay at home...

Saw face masks being sold for a bargain $2.50 today, but so far haven't seen anyone wearing one. Only a matter of time. In the meantime, 30 people in the region I'm currently staying in have recently been diagnosed with measles, yet that barely warrants a mention in the local paper.

The world gets crazier...

Visitors to our cluster housing are to have their temperature taken on arrival, and if they're over 38 celsius they'll not be allowed entry.

By which time they'll have infected the doorman, who presumably is allowed entry, and of course the residents who they're visiting.

I say we lock down the entire world and prevent anyone from travelling anywhere for any reason.

Anyone with me?

P.S. I've heard unsubstantiated rumours that someone sneezed suspiciously in Dulwich Village this morning - I say we quarantine the whole filthy, disgusting place (DV that is, not ED, of course).

    • Awful. A Google search came up with this, but will he check his office email over Christmas? Maybe worth also contacting local councillor? 'To contact Southern Housing's CEO, Paul Hackett, you can try his direct email, [email protected], or use the general contact email [email protected], as well as calling their main number, 0300 303 1066, for general inquiries or to be directed to the executive level.' Also, from the website: https://www.southernhousing.org.uk/latest-news/2025/contacting-us-over-the-festive-period   'Contacting us about an emergency? If you have an emergency outside of the above times over the festive period, such as severe flooding, an uncontainable leak, gas leak, complete electrical failure or lift breakdown, please call us on 0300 303 1066' I hope it is sorted out soon.
    • Dawson Heights again  2 lifts out of order at ladlands block Christmas Eve so of course the 🛗 will not be repaired tomorrow Christmas Day or Boxing Day or when how do elderly or mothers with children and prams and food and presents get to the floors and with the 10 minutes you get to drop off  to park and not get a Pcn fine and delivery food to relatives who can’t leave their house unbelievable Southern housing does any know email address of Coe of southern housing
    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
