Padlocks On The Cherry Tree Pub

I agree its missing. It might be the right niche. The thing is, the last time I went to the Cherry Tree (under the lure of new management) a couple of years ago, it was to watch football there. EDT was too full. It was okay and somewhat busy. Service was terrible as usual though.

Friends staying with us went to watch the football at the Plough recently and I'm sure my husband has dragged me to the Actress to watch sport. I've watched the Rugby in the Bishop in the not too distant past as well.

Unless things have changed recently, there is some sport offering outside of the EDT. Not sure how much more demand there is as the other places are never heaving when they have sport on. The EDT might already fully occupy that niche.

The Plough shows football but only on small TVs. The Castle has a big screen but it's rubbish so everyone watches the small TVs. EDT gets ridiculously busy and is really badly laid out for it IMO. Would rather miss a match than watch it there.

Somewhere with space and a good quality big screen would be most welcome.

Can't comment on The Actress, the place just leaves me cold.

That's less of a template and more of a photocopy.

Anyone remember Fred Wedlock

Early One Evening

(tune: Early one morning)

from an album by: Fred Wedlock

Early one evening, just as the pubs were opening

A traveller came a-walking down a cold and misty street.

Seeing the door ajar, stepped into the public bar.

"Landlord I would like a jar, and something nice to eat."

"I fancy some crusty bread and roast beef of old Eng-el-and

Butter from the churn and tangy homemade pickle too.

And if you think you could draw some bitter from the wood,

I'd be quite content to quaff a foaming pint or two."

"I'll sit by the fireside and contemplate eternity,

The comfort of your hostelry will cleave unto my heart,

And if a regular should chance to come into the bar,

Maybe I'll engage him in a contest with the dart."

"'Allo" said the landlord "I've got frozen fishpaste sandwiches,

And Soya sausage substitute I purchase by the ton,

And if you fancy it, I might defrost a bit,

And plaster it with ketchup in a supermarket bun."

"I'll sling you a fizzy pint of super-sparkle Ready-Brew,

As advertised on telly by a famous rugby scrum.

No dirty barrels here?- we keeps hygienic beer,

Safely paralysed inside an aluminium drum."

"Sit by the fireside, I'll turn the logs on right away.

Maybe you would like to try our latest fruit machine.

Three cherries in a row?- that'll set your heart aglow.

I'll just turn on the jukebox, that'll really set the scene."

The traveller sat sadly in the polystyrene inglenook,

And felt his ears vibrating to the electronic sound.

Took a bite, began to chew. Sipped his pint of Ready Brew.

Gave a ghastly gurgle?- and fell dead upon the ground.

"Oh dear," said the landlord as he turned the colour telly on,

"Another fatal accident, the third this week I fear.

If they can't hold their own why don't they just stay at home.

We don't 'arf get some bloody funny customers round here."

Whatever you may think of the Victoria, The Wishing Well never had any ale on latterly - the original pub with no beer, in fact - and so far as I know it never rented out rooms, affordable or not?

Despite the lack of ale I was quite fond of The Wishing Well, and maybe I have led a sheltered life, but it was the only place round here when I have been scared to come out of the loo because of what was going on outside it :(

It did once have a good Kraftwerk Tribute Night though :))

    • Can someone please explain who "one Dulwich" are?
    • We are actually referred to as "Supporters"...2,100 of us across Dulwich...read and weep! 😉   https://www.onedulwich.uk/supporters   Got it, the one where 64% of respondents in the consultation area said they wanted the measures "returned to their original state". Is that the one you claim had a yes/no response question?   Well I suggest you read up on it as it is an important part of the story of utter mismangement by the councils and this is why so many of us can't work out who is pulling the council's strings on this one because surely you can agree that if the emergency services were knocking on your door for months and months telling you the blocks in the roads were delayihg response times and putting lives at risk you'd do something about it? Pretty negligent not to do so don't you think - if I was a councillor it would not sit well with me?   Careful it could be a Mrs, Miss or Mx One.....   Of course you don't that's because you have strong opinions but hate being asked for detail to.back-up those opinions (especially when it doesn't serve their narrative) and exposes the flaws in your arguments! 😉  As so many of the pro-LTN lobby find to their cost the devil is always in the detail.....
    • Really?  I'm sorry to hear that. What did you order?
