So you didn't meet encounter someone who happened to be overly aggressive - you met someone who happened to be a cyclist and therefore was ALREADY overly aggressive

Did she "try and run you over" or was she just selfish and didn't see you? The first options sounds premeditated and unlikely

Generalising about a whole group of people isn't likely to win friends. Or influence anyone

As it happens 2 different cyclists have nearly crashed into me in the last week and a bit. But compared to many dozens of drivers who were oblivious to me because they were on a mobile or refused to stop at a pedestrian crossing, I'm more wary of the latter

You think you've got it bad?

Years ago a worked as a motorbike courier (alot of fun) and cycle couriers would do something called 'Alley catting' on a fixie (no gears) bike.

That was irritating and life threatening for others.

This still goes on.

I encounter idiot cyclists every other day, they always speed through the red lights on a cycle lane near my work place & they don't think it applies to them...I've lost count of the times I've almost been hit, I've almost been hit several times when getting off my bus because they think its ok to cycle quickly between the bus & the pavement..Seriously, there should be a cycling proficiency test...

It annoys me because it totally ruins it for the majority of cyclists who are pretty decent ( & who obey the highway code )

It annoys me too Andystar...In fact I cringe every time a cyclist flouts the law. I am an experienced cyclist who has undertaken cycling proficiency, I abide by the rules/law , "give way" to drivers where practicable and stop for old ladies etc, I have 3rd party insurance, and my bike is registered etc. etc. Despite this, I suffer regular abuse (some physical) from drivers purely they choose to tar me with the same brush as cyclists who (e.g.) breach the Highway Code etc. But what to do? I love cycling, it costs me pennies, it keeps me trim and healthy, and its gets me to my destinations on time.

So please don't hate me, drivers.::o

I hate people who drive through red lights, selfish f#ckers. All the intergreens are having to be increased (the time between one light going red and the next one going green) to give a larger safety period to accommodate these w@nkers so they don?t cause some hideous accident.

What it means to you and I is more queuing and waiting at traffic lights... unless you jump the lights

Every now and again you get that 'should I brake or should I go' orange light moment. If the answer is 'go' I'm always amazed to look back in my mirror to see two or three vehicles have followed me through the lights. Madness.

Of course if you do stop, a quick glance back to see the driver behind with a 'grrr. we could have made that' look on his/her face always brightens the day...

I drive around London a lot in my day to day work and am also amazed at the amount of red light running by both cars and cycles, several times a day I get cyclist running red lights out of side streets and then looking shocked that there is actually traffic heading towards them from the other direction.

On the same note I had a white van driver honking his horn at me yesterday for not running the lights as they when from orange to red as we approached them. Maybe we should put all red light runners in a special part of the city and let natural selection sort em out.

    • Oh dear! The general response is that my experience of Jon Hartley is the norm. That’s bad. As an update to my issue with him, Ellie Reeves’ office advised that I contact the Southwark Labour Party Chief Whip in the first instance with my complaint. Coincidentally, the Chief Whip turns out to be Cllr Maggie Browning. She acknowledged my complaint and, in response, said that she had ‘spoken’ to Jon Hartley and appeared satisfied that he’d now responded to me. Not sure that’ s an adequate response, since it seems to been well-known that he consistently ignores constituents. Maggie will know that better than anyone as she’s paired with Jon in our Ward, and she’s having to pick up the stuff which he’s ignoring. As people have noted, Maggie does indeed respond to constituents but she’s now on maternity leave. Alas, I think that means we’re lumbered with just Jon. I’ve bypassed him in respect of my own issue, because I think he’s a waste of my time. In case anyone else should be having problems with him, especially now that Maggie Browning is away, I’d recommend emailing Ellie Reeves MP. Her office is very responsive in my experience and, if she hears from enough disgruntled constituents of Cllr Hartley, I imagine she be quietly speaking to the Southwark Constituency Labour Party about him. Ultimately, if he stands again, he won’t be getting my vote. Be annoyed people, be very annoyed ! Your vote should count for something and the candidates privileged enough to get it should do the job they were elected for!
