Keef, you're right about the Uplands, the refurb may have ripped the soul out of the place but then it's always been a bit of a dump. Anyway, soon I must venture to the FHT and check it out. It'll be the first time I've been in there for more than 20 years!!! It always struck me as being full of thugs "Oi! you staring at my pint."

Hello everyone fairly new to all this.

I agree with Louisa in many respects - I think its a shame that all new pubs have to do a full food menu? It definitely detracts from the atmosphere of a place and most of them do not do it well. I admired the EDT for a while as they had shied away from serving food downstairs but even they seem to have caved in.

However times do change and pubs change with them, what we think of as a traditional boozer - thick curtains, flowery carpet, double diamond - was also just the trend of the day and i'm sure people complained about them as well once. Even lager itself would have been seen as pretty poncey and look at its populartiy know.

So good luck to the FHT if its change or bust go for it.

Myself and OneJulia spent all of one pints worth of time there on Saturday, would have stayed longer but found the experience bland.

The back garden is a car park with huge piece of decking on top, weird selection of seating and not enough to go round. KIbnd of empty feeling even though busy. Inside I loved the original dark wood paneling but why then have dark wood and leather furniture?. All too heavy. Croatia vs Estonia on the TV helped none. And finally, a pet hate, why call it 'FHT' when it's real name is the Forest Hill Tavern? Just coz everyone else does?

Spotted several other punters lasting just one pint.

Jumped on a bus down to the marvelous Gowlett and had a great time.

Don't you mean craic? :)-D

Dear AP,

Are you sure you weren't simply in a carpark??? I say this, as the garden in NO WAY resembles a carpark. Are you sure you hadn't had one too many the night before?

Its called the "FHT" as its undergone a REFURB. If you want to know what the that word means, you can look it up in an "OED". An OED is an Oxford English Dictionary.

Enjoy the Gowlett. I think its probably more suitable for you...

Are you connected with the FHT? No problem if you are it's just all your posts are about the FHT and it would be far better to be honest and say that as a regular/worker/manager/owner you would like to reply to any criticism by saying..... whatever

I've been and quite liked it. I'll be back for sure and bring some friends. But it is fresh-as-a-daisy new and hasn't yet developed much character - but thats ok, that's how most pubs start especially avert a refurb, so AnotherPaul has a point as far as it goes. I thought the staff were great, the beers were good (then again I am lager boy) and the atmosphere buzzy (if a bit transient as people came to check it out before decided if it would become a regular haunt)

As for criticizing the FHT nomenclature - well I understand the desire to break from the past whilst retaining a link and the old initial trick has been a popular tactic. I believe the OED got in on the act. But people have been doing it for years and it's a bit "done" and a bit safe. Perhaps the point AP is making is that to show how fresh the refurb is, a more original name could have been found. At this point I come unstuck because I'm not sure what I would choose so I hold my hands up - but you can kind of see the point?

But I think the pub has done a great job and as I say I'll be back and if you do work there be sure and say hi next time I drop in

Edited for this PS

err.. PS. Taking a shot at the Gowlett was a bit unnecessary. A fine pub in itself, have you been and what was wrong with it?

    • With fibre you are paying for the speed, which is the number, yours is 300 so if you did a lot of gaming, for example, you would want the fastest possible.  If it's just office work or maybe streaming on Netflix you likely won't need as fast, but, if there are a lot of people in your house all doing their own thing on different devices, then faster speeds are better.  I don't rely on my Wi-Fi much other than when I am using my mobile.  I use Ethernet cables to connect up everything, I Have one cable running from my router, along the skirtings and through a hole I drilled in the wall to another room.  I have attached the plusnet speed guide which gives you an idea of how it works.
    • I'd reread what you posted and try to summarise.  It just comes across as a rant.
    • Just shows, to me, once proud to be a citizen of UK.. now.. well if we pay/contribute to services - nhs, police, fire etc and folk who have made this there home - no matter what creed or culture.. for the love c of God, can someone  please explain to me.. how we have working royals who like them or not, have tried and continue to actually support and make a change and then we have Andrew.. who just destroys everything.. not just him, or royalty but his own children..  I had great admiration for The Queen - and respect.. as have a huge number of people.. but.. these old traditions where gosh.. live rent free and can’t get chucked out until I believe 2070? From what I scanned..well he has and continues to have it all.. has to go thru what old rules? Etc.  doubt very much he has even kept the upkeep maintenance up on his abode.. and do the shite keeps on pulling up.. What has Andrew done for UK or for that matter since he was 20?? Do please tell me       Totally off topic, before anyone jumps down my throat.. I just do not get how anyone is proud to be British at this point in time. Whoever is in power, seems to be able to help themselves to the public purse with no redress at all - Covid is a great example of lining of pockets.. Millions  given to Rowanda, so one is led to believe, to help with refugee problem and one can’t get a plane load off!  I simply do not get it at all. Use of food banks in UK growing yearly, homeless as well, nhs, police, fire service etc all on their knees..
    • Have applied the green roof at a number of properties and no issues you are concerned about detected. Have issues with cats defecating in the vicinity, however, they are not selecting the green roof specifically. Use decent compost, slow release fertiliser specific for green roofs, and lay it methodically not leaving blank patches. It looks amazing when cared for and adds value.
