silverfox
Bit behind the curve but glad to see today's Times agrees with me.Video replays now a must for World Cup after Ireland's hard luck story"...Had the fourth official at the Stade de France been doing something useful like watching television, instead of policing the technical areas or checking that his electronic boards were functioning, he could have whispered into the earpiece of Martin Hansson, the Swedish referee, that the agonised Ireland players were not acting and that William Gallas?s goal was illicit. Henry could have been shown a yellow card and play been restarted with a free kick to Ireland. No one, including Henry, would have complained. France might still have won, either in what was left of extra time or on penalties. Or Ireland won. But no one would have been stigmatised or left with a grievance. And there would have been no break in the flow. The time devoted to goal celebrations would simply have been reallocated to Henry?s punishment..."http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/columnists/patrick_barclay/article6924057.ece Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8504-so-france-v-ireland-and-ireland-v-france/page/8/#findComment-266140 Share on other sites

woofmarkthedog
Oh Henry, he was such a great player at Arsenal. Now look at the fallen hero, has he lost all credibility now, it's a shameful state of affairs Mind you Ireland would have gone out sooner rather than later W**F ( *kevlar helmet on, body armor, check* ) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/8504-so-france-v-ireland-and-ireland-v-france/page/8/#findComment-266184 Share on other sites
Mick Mac
WoofAnd in '86, Argentina were the better team, so it was ok for Maradona to cheat, as it helped get the better team through. And lets face it England were never going to win it. It would be nice to have the chance of winning it though (and an excuse for a holiday/lots more nights in the Castle).I know you are only having a bt of fun btw, but when Ladygooner made a similar point yesterday, about playoff teams not having a chance of winning it, I think she meant it. matthew123
I think France have chance of progressing to latter stages but it's difficult to see past Spain or Brazil actually winning this World Cup. As a neutral I want World Cup as competitive as possible rather than countries like New Zealand who are just there as passengers - and that is the real shame Ireland had to play off against France and not Bahrain! mockney piers
Denamrk didn't even qualify and won the Euros. Greece were a very humdrum team and also won Euros. Actually that (Portugal 2004) was a poor quality tournament full stop. I have high hopes for this one, the last couple of world cups have been a bit dissappointig quality wise, but I just have a feelin thisll be a cracker. Mick Mac
Ironically France have moved to 7th in the world ranking after this debacle (moving above England) - Ireland move down to 36th ! so Ireland are in Pot 3 for the Euro group draws and therefore have a bit or work to do again with 2 teams in the group ranked higher than them. This is the mess Brian Kerr got us into with enept performances during his reign and Trapatoni has to get us back into contention for a 2nd seed spot ahead of the next WC qualifying campaign.
