Hi

I was wondering if there are any new tea groups for mums (and dads ofcourse) in east dulwich. We had a baby during November, and haven't joined one yet...

Be nice to meet some other mums on maternity leave for coffee and chat, happy to join a group that's already going or get a new one started.

I hope you have some luck - I'm a tea host in SE22, however haven't been contacted for the best part of a year to ask whether I can host, so it seems as if it's ground to a halt in this area. There is an NCT run tea group at the Goose Green centre on a Monday morning which you could try (not sure of times, but I'm sure it would come up in a search).

hello starbee there is indeed a group on monday mornings at st john's community centre. i'm also a new mum and getting very confused with all the different activities on offer. you can find a list of free activities on southwark website. theres also quite a lot on offer at soup dragon.
another thing that was great for me was townley road new parents group. Go to the townley road clinic and on their notice board(walk in clinic turn right past reception desk, walk forward to the back right hand corner and notice board on wall next to door) on there you will see the timetable for the parents classes. Its a free class for babies 0-6 months, runs for 6/7 weeks on a mon afternoon 2-4. They do an hour on a different topic i.e weaning, sleeping, teething etc then you get an hour just to sit and chat. the classes themselves I found to be a bit rubbish but that where I met most of my mummy friends and got loads of advice from them and nice to see babies at different stages. I went to coffee mornings etc to try and meet people but I found because of the drop in nature of these sessions you didnt really get to know people and each week were looking for familliar faces or starting from scratch introducing yourself etc. Because these classes run weekly for 7 weeks by the end of it you really feel like you have made friends and we all kept going meeting up each week, sometimes only 3 of us meet us and at other times there are 7 of us which is lovely. on the timetable it will give you the dates, you dont need to sign up you just turn up and join in on the first session when it comes round again.
thats great ko, like I said sessions are a bit rubbish(a few were helpful but some not well organised when we did it but that was 2 years ago so may have improved!) but stick with it as you should see the same faces for a few weeks in a row and start to make friends.

From what Ludoscotts said, seems like the first hour is is on the topic (the timetable gave a different person doing each session, eg the health visitor or nurse) and then the next hour is informal chat between the parents.

hi again, i joined two 2nd time Mum tea groups in June last year organised through the nct, the co-ordinator was great. us mums have kept the groups going as much as possible even now we've started returning to work. If you want to PM me I can send you the e-mail address of the nct tea group co-ordinator we had. I've met some really nice people through these tea groups.

Best wishes

hi ko how was it on mon? was the class any good? I found I was left a bit bemused after the first session but then the following week when I walked in and saw the familar faces it was nice and a few of us went on for a cup of coffee (at the plough!)after the 2nd session and I felt a lot happier so stick with it at least for another week if it wasnt up to much.
  • 4 weeks later...

hey i have been looking for info on this and the council website is good but not sure all groups are on there.

Does the NCT group meet at St Johns on a Monday still and does anyone know the time? Anyone been to a session?

Any other good groups people would recommend - my baby is not quite 2 months yet but keen to get out and meet other parents in the area.

Sniff!

I went to Townley Road when my first daughter was 6 weeks old. She's 5 and a half now and we still meet up with a group of the other mums and 'babies' on at least a weekly basis. Both my daughters count their best friends amongst the children from the group and I have made some real lasting friendships. Going there was probably the best parenting decision I ever made. I'm really glad it's still going.

    • OK, good suggestion and it appears that the after-market price is about £260. But if that that was fitted ex-factory then the cost would be substantially less and certainly a small fraction of the price of a high-end car.
