It's trick or treating I don't like. She's been invited to another party where they are going to just dress up and play party games. But if I go to that instead I really will offend this mum so probably best just to keep away from both!! She's only 4. I am just not convinced it sends any sort of good message to kids and quite possibly the wrong one. Equally can hardly say that!! susypx

at present i am thinking that i won't let her go. I wouldn't be offended if someone said to me very nicely they didn't like it , i think this particular mum will be offended as she is only being sociable and trying to foster a community spirit - but i really don't think it's ok for children to be taught it's ok to knock on strangers' doors and ask for sweets. just can't think of the best way to put it.... shall i just say i am a bit bah humbug about it all but hope they all have a nice time?! susypx

I hate trick or treating. Our house is always in darkness on halloween night. Bah humbug and all that. Have a dilemma this year - my daughter's best friend is having a halloween party and going trick or treating- they live over the road. Obviously if I say we won't go because I hate it it will offend her mum. Should I just let her go and keep stum? Am I alone in hating this tradition?! susypx

I've posted before here about my daughter's recurrent "foo foo" infection! It's controlled now with cream but it definitely comes back if I don't use the cream. The doctor has suggested that the fact she is still in nappies at night (and they get very wet) could be a factor, and one that we should be thinking about dealing with. My daughter has generally been ahead developmentally on most things but at 4 years and 3 months shows absolutely no signs of being dry at night - in fact her nappies are absolutely soaked in the morning (she hardly goes to the toilet in the day so I am not sure whether it just all comes out at night!). So I am not sure how this attempt is going to go! I have already bribed her with the promise of a specific doll when she is dry at night, so she is up for the idea! So with half term we are going to give a try at giving up night time nappies. A friend suggested two layers of waterproof mat and sheets- so in the middle of the night you can pull one layer off without having to completely remake the bed. And I will try and lift her when I go to bed (but she is pretty comotose in the night!). Any other tips from seasoned veterans?! thank you! Susypx

Online shopping is my advice! I also used to do it using a sling then she would sleep. susypx

Micro scooter or trike for a 2 year old?
susyp replied to emza78's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My daughter had both for her 2nd birthday (not both from us !) . The trike was never a real goer except in the back garden whereas she is still whizzing around on her scooter 2 years later. I have seen plenty of 2 year olds using them, slowly at first of course!! She got the hang of it pretty quickly and is not exactly a coordinated child. But no doubt your daughter will love whatever you choose! susypx -
I have the nitty gritty comb and full marks on the advice of this thread! Have used the nitty gritty comb so far and tea tree oil mixed in her shampoo. Still not sure, but she probably does have it - just not found any live ones yet. Should I be combing in dry hair to check - as I am more likely to get a live one that way? Wet hair perhaps better when you have clarified that you definitely have a problem?! Going to go through mine in a minute anyway! susypx

Right, after 2 hours of deliberation, I now think my daughter has these. Found lots of "glitter" in her hair, but odd how it has multiplied in her hair several days after using glitter.... Then a comb through in the shower brought up 2 long shaped black things (louses?!). Have then washed her hair with a bit of tea tree oil added. Read that I shouldn't be treating unless I find a live one? Or should I treat in the morning ? I am insanely itchy now. Also we tend to share hairbrushes - should I be soaking them in boiling water - they have plastic handles - or just hot water?! I will definitely have them if she does as I lie with her while she drops off to sleep and our heads generally touch!! Susypx

She wouldn't have her school photo taken (reception so first time in uniform (sob!)) as the man had a beard.... this from a very socially confident child - but i've learnt there is no point trying to reasons with these fears!! woolly and tig on cbeebies is quite a good programme though as it does address this sort of thing. susypx

Dummies - my 4 year old is terrified of them. And they are everywhere - even the London Transport Museum has them! She loves princesses and we took her to a castle but she was frightened out of her wits as there were so many dummies! Does tower of london have dummies does anyone know?! people dressed up as characters also terrify her. funny things susypx

Thank you all ,we seem ok so far but she has been playing with this friend on a daily basis and they are very tactile so I feel the risk is high! I combed through with conditioner and the nitty gritty comb to get out any possible eggs - looked today and seems ok. Problem is we have been using glitter and in some lights the glitter looks like dark eggs! We shall see. Seems to be a lot of it at school at the moment!! When I was growing up my friend's mum used to check the hair of every child that passed her door. She used to have a chair in her porch and sit us there. On more than one occasion a child had to be sent home . This was before birthday parties and everything. My mum says she didn't know about this and would have been furious had she known!! susypx

Just bumping this thread with brilliant advice as my friend has just texted to say her daughter (who is in my daughter's class) has headlice. What am I checking for - she said she had live ones and dark spots - I thought the eggs were white - will go and buy comb and full marks tomorrow - should I be combing with the comb and looking for - what? can't stop itching now... Hi, I am a SAHM but have recently begun training for two separate businesses I hope to set up. Obviously I would want a decent website for each of them to drum up business through people searching on the internet etc - can anyone recommend a good and inexpensive website builder? thank you! susypx

Swimming lessons for a 2.5 year old?
susyp replied to Inkmaiden's topic in The Family Room Discussion
ED Mummy I don't think Ink Maiden's tone was rude - I think you've taken it the wrong way. Easy to do when it's not in person. susypx -
Riverford Organic - Rant - allergic reaction
susyp replied to susyp's topic in The Family Room Discussion
arg it's still going on despite piriton - I am loathe to give too much as it makes her exhausted - last few nights waking up screaming in pain with wind and tummy ache in day. She actually seems quite happy but I am a wreck! At least I have clarified, yes she is still very allergic. Sigh Susypx -
My sister had this problem and had to switch to bottle feeds with formula - he was starving and had loads initially - despite that he's the only baby in our family who wasn't really fat at 6 months - just very very hungry! susypx

Riverford Organic - Rant - allergic reaction

Their customer service is pretty poor. I had to make a big fuss before I had any response. GOing to try Abel and Cole now! susypx -
Riverford Organic - Rant - allergic reaction
susyp replied to susyp's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Interesting link Saffron thanks. Hoping this may have been why she appeared to have an infection we corresponded about on Sunday! As buttermilk is probably one of the worst things she can have. It kind of explains everything that's been going on with her health wise. I've now heard from someone more senior at Riverford that they are taking this seriously and investigating it properly - and will come back to me with the findings. Which really is what I wanted. Making our own bread now. We already make our own cakes so it's not that much of a stretch hopefully. And to think that 4 years ago I couldn't cook for toffee - now making bread and cakes myself!! Just shows you nothing is impossible! susypx -
For lack of anywhere else to rant, I just wanted to let it out about Riverford Organic. I get a box every week. Last week I splashed out and added some Olive and Tomato Focaccia to my order, as my 4 year old loves focaccia. She is highly dairy allergic. I checked the ingredients several times - no milk. Then, for 4 nights - she was constantly waking up screaming in pain with chronic wind - and had tummy ache all day. I thought she was ill and she missed a few days of school (bearing in mind she has only just started school). Then on nights 3 and 4, when the calpol clearly wasn't working, we decided to try antihistamine - instant response with the wind but she still had tummy ache in the day. I checked everything she had had several times, no dairy - and concluded she must have been eating out of other children's lunch boxes - cue firm mummy talk about not eating other people's food. So on Saturday I decided to email Riverford to double check the focaccia had no dairy in it. Got a response saying I would hear back in 48 hours. No response so far. So today I rang my local franchisee - she checked online - it says the focaccia had buttermilk as the second ingredient! I have a pdf of the page from Saturday - it doesn't list buttermilk. Clearly, we both think - they are covering their backs. And yet no phone call to me. In the end I ring the press office as the only HO number I can find. Eventually some 12 year old who is head of customer services calls me back to apologise. He clearly has no idea of the seriousness of this. No promise to end contract wit the bakery, no promise to investigate or to go through all their website to check accuracy of ingredients. No offer even of any compensation, free box - not that that is the point and would probably not have sated my anger. Needless to say I have cancelled any future deliveries. Unbelievable though from a company who pretend to be ethical. Can I take this any further does anyone know? Is it a trading standards issue? Susypx

Yes that's a good idea about checking the toilets. I'll ask her about it, she normally tells me if something worries her. She has dones well on her reward chart so far today and has drunk a glass about every 2 hours and also had a wee each time. I'll give her a ribena carton tomorrow instead of oj in her lunch - we stupidly only have one beaker so she has one out on the classroom side so i need to buy another one to go in her lunch box. She has squash in it - and will have water at breaktimes. Depends what I worry about - I giver her oj with calcium added to boost her calcium intake as she is dairy allergic - but she could probably just drink more oatmilk instead. the toilets in her nursery were awful for sure - everytime I went in they all seemed to have a poo in too! susypx

Yes I think I will try and ask the teacher to get her to drink more and go to the toilet more. As the last week specifically she has not been at all at school and this has been the week her tummy ache has got worse. I also tend to give her a lot of juice as she will drink that - so am cutting that right out now. Very hard getting her to drink so I may have to be imaginative and design some sort of reward chart. But although the doctor says it is not linked to these infections I am definitely noticing that the times that she doesn't drink enough are linked to these infections. I will see a doctor tomorrow and ask for a swab and a referral. How invasive would a kidney test be? She's had tummy ache on and off for a good 6 months I would say. It's hard to know how much of it is real and how much of it something she has twigged she can say. As you would never think watching her play etc that there was anything wrong. I have a morbid fear of hospitals so need to try and address this - I didn't take her one night when she couldn't breathe with croup and only found out afterwards how dangerous that was - so this forum is very helpful in giving me a balanced opinion - as not only am i totally neurotic about health issues - I also find it very hard to take her to see anyone at hospital - weird combination! so thank you so much for advice, it is very gratefully received susypx

thank you all - it looks fine today - and i gave her a bath with white vinegar added first thing which was ok. But she has a bad tummy ache which seems to be linked so I will probably visit the GP tomorrow - going to try and see the same one ! In terms of the nappy - she is 4 so I really need to persuade her out of them at night - I really don't think she will become dry naturally - but figure starting school is enough for the time being - maybe in the spring. May try and give her a quick (vinegar)bath in the morning to make sure no urine clinging . I wonder if it is the bubble bath - we use a very gentle one (santex) but my sister had a of skin allergies. She doesn't seem to smelly too vinegary anyway! I only added half a cup! susypx

thank you fuschia you are a legend! xxx

Yes I was wondering about asking to be referred. Especially because of the stomach pain which is what worries me the most. It's not stinging at all at the moment, she hasn't complained at all the last few days, I just happened to notice tonight that it was a bit red and smelly. will try the vinegar thing and also visit doctor on monday - I hate taking her out of school when she is so new to it but sure she'll not be bothered about missing an hour. The medicine has to be given 4 times a day so I guess at least once at school and ideally twice - it would work well at break times as actually would be an hour before food and I could give it through the fence - do schools approve this or does it have to be given by the nurse? Just thought it would be less hassle for me to pop up with it than her having to be taken to the nurse (the playground is alongside the road). I appreciate the school would have to ok it and inform the playground attendants of course!! susypx
