  1. Thanks DKH. Glad I found this out before I did something irrevocable (like buy another car) :))
  2. Thanks both. I need to rethink my car strategy now! So if you start in the zone, then drive out of it, but drive back in within the same day, are you charged once or twice?
  3. Which GP surgery was that?

Is that true That may be a game changer for me if so. I thought it was ?12.5O for every day your car was within the zone, parked or driven? Can somebody post a link which states the rule very clearly and unambiguously, please? Obviously when I say is that true, I'm not referring to Lowlander's figures 🤣
  5. Congratulations on your new job!

But torn and damaged books are a quite different kettle of fish to books which are just old. As pointed out above, some old books can be quite valuable from a money point of view, and others will be of interest to people for various reasons. I quite often buy old books, because I find them interesting or amusing, or because I like the pictures, or sometimes to use them in collages or decoupage. ETA: As BNG says above, the Oxfam book shop in Herne Hill will take any amount of books. I imagine they check them all and know which are worth more than others. I have taken a large amount of books there in the past. In my shopping trolley (I know you don't have a car, Foxy 🦊 )
  7. One of my granddaughters cuts the middles out of old books and makes boxes of them. There was someone a few Christmases back selling things made of old books from a stall on Lordship Lane. Artists also make interesting things using pages from old books.

There's a tiny one at the bottom of Oglander Road. I bought some books there a few weeks ago!
  9. I've got the same problem with Royal Mail. Senders send replacements and they never arrive either. ETA: Helen Hayes (our MP) went to a lot of trouble to look into this a while back. It might be worth contacting her again.

The mayor of London presumably has to consider security issues, and no doubt his cars conform to the ULEZ rules on emissions. People may appreciate having a car, and as noted above, for some people it is virtually essential, however there is increasing evidence of the damage pollution does both to the environment and to health The results of more research on that was just publicised this morning. Edited for typos
  11. Well I fully support the extension of the ULEZ zone, however I'm very pissed off personally at having to give up a car which has been well maintained, has had very few problems over the 15 years I've had it, and is in excellent condition for its age.

  13. I'm in the aged granny category, but I wouldn't expect my family to make a mercy dash across the country to me (unless I was dying)! I have on a couple of occasions called 111 for advice and ended up being taken to A&E in an ambulance, however ....
  14. Seabag Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Get an electric bike or scooter Sue > > I expect most of your trips out are fairly local > > And join Zip too. I had thought of getting an electric bike, but I'm not very steady on a bike and I'm scared of the traffic. My push bike is too big for me and I do need to replace it, as it's been languishing in a hangar since I was too ill to ride it, however most of my local trips are to/from my allotment, and I couldn't carry bulky stuff on a bike. Presently I often go to the allotment on the bus if I can fit what I need to carry into a backpack and/or shopping trolley :) Taking a car there is a faff anyway because there is only one parking space so we are only allowed twenty minutes to load or unload, then we have to go and park elsewhere. I'm investigating Zip, and also peer to peer car hire, which is all new to me .....

It does depend where you are going, what the transport links are like, whether you have anything heavy/bulky to transport in either or both directions, how long you are staying etc.. Foxy, I'm amazed you used to drive to Brighton and back in a day. I do it by train anyway. Far less hassle than driving!

  17. Has anybody given up their car and not regretted it? My ancient car (1998) is in mostly excellent condition for its age (a couple of dents) but won't pass the upcoming ULEZ requirements. I live just within the ULEZ zone, but far enough from the boundary to not consider parking the car outside it (I'd have to get a bus to get to the car 🤣) I just want something reliable to get me from A to B, but I hadn't realised used cars cost so much, even quite old ones, and I'm not sure whether to get another one. I've had mine around fifteen years. Somebody I know who lives out of London is probably buying mine 😭😭😭 I haven't done the financial calculations lately, but there is also the convenience factor ....
  18. Truly terrible service.

  20. Is anyone still having delivery issues? A package from St Thomas's hospital that was posted to me on 11 August has still not arrived, and another tracked package just comes up with a message saying no information is available until the item has been delivered. How can that be described as "tracking"? It's now been so long that the sender has sent me a replacement. Let's hope that doesn't also go into the abyss where Royal Mail seems to keep its parcels 🙄

  22. We had a lovely meal in Mirash last night Hadn't been there for years, since when it's all been done out inside. Shame you can't really see that from outside. Foxy, there is a separate drinks menu. Kingfisher on draught. Cobra in bottles. The Kingfisher was cheaper, and absolutely fine. We will be back! Based on the quality of last night's food it is now our Indian restaurant of choice!
  23. The security thing is not an issue for us, so far as I am aware.
  24. I'd have it if you could get it to my allotment!
