Jamie Hooper took over an absolute dive (The Ivanhoe) and worked really hard to change it into a friendly pub where people not only felt comfortable to go but wanted to go. If these licence changes go through he will probably have to close altogether. The pub is not on the beaten track and needs music and other events to bring people from outside the immediate community in, unless they are going for the range of ale (it won a CAMRA award). Jamie has already bent over backwards to try to appease this woman who is complaining, including installing shutters and secondary doors. He has taken a key role in being involved in the local street party etc.. It would be a tragedy if Hoopers were to close. I sincerely hope that the licensing committee sees sense. And I don't agree re the Uplands, I think the Actress is a vast improvement. I live round the corner, and I didn't like the vibe in the Uplands at all, whereas I like the Actress.

The problem with reporting an issue via their website, also, is that there is no provision to make comments. So I couldn't say "my brown box hasn't been emptied for two weeks" - I was only able to report the last non-emptying. (It was emptied as a result, however, and was emptied on time this week).

I was in Crystal Palace Road the other day on my way to DMC, and I saw somebody on the other side of the road, not in a postie uniform but in jeans, rummaging through a red bag of post and parcels. He was there in the same place for some time. He took what appeared to be an envelope from a set of items held together with a rubber band and held it up as if to see what was in it, though it's possible he was checking the address. When he saw I had stopped and was looking at what he was doing, he turned back, crossed Whateley Road and continued up Crystal Palace Road in the direction of Sylvester Road. I was so concerned I actually went up to the sorting office and asked whether all their posties had uniforms. They said "not if they are new" and then "was this person just round the corner" and when I said yes, they said he was from an agency. It seemed odd to me that he should be fishing around in the bag and apparently inspecting items when he was in a part of the road where he wasn't actually delivering them. His actions might of course be completely innocent, but in the light of what people have said above, I'm beginning to wonder. I know there are viewing galleries in many sorting offices where investigation officers can watch the actual sorting if they suspect there is theft going on, but if the theft is happening once the post has left the office, that would be harder to identify. I can't understand, however, why someone would slit open an envelope but then still deliver it - that would suggest that the slitting had happened at an earlier stage in the system, surely, otherwise you're just providing the recipient with proof of your crime.

PeckhamRose, you may not want to do this, but if you have varifocal contact lenses you don't need reading glasses - it's brilliant not having to keep taking them on and off, and forgetting where you've put them. I don't know whether they make varifocals for hard lenses, but they deffo do for soft lenses. Soft lenses take a while to get used to putting in and taking out if you've been used to hard ones - my sister gave up on them - but I found it was well worth while persevering with them. They aren't that expensive if you buy them online (you have to google for the cheapest source of the particular brand you have been prescribed) - and unlike buying varifocal glasses online there's no chance of getting them wrongly made, because they are exactly the same contact lenses as you'd pay double for elsewhere. ETA: AND you don't get agonisingly painful bits of dust stuck behind them like you do with hard lenses :) AND there's no problem if your eyes get a bit dry eg towards the end of the day.

I think it's really useful to know what the local stats are, because obviously people don't usually start a thread or post on this forum saying that they've never been burgled, only if they have, which can give a very skewed picture. And James is both proactive and also in my experience quick to respond to issues which he can do something about, so I don't know why some people seem to come on here constantly with apparently the sole aim of slagging him off.

So CPT, as you have seen this thread (as you are posting on it!), can you comment on what is going to happen to the pub, if anything? ETA: Has your name lost an 'n' somewhere?? :))

If I have needed to see a doctor the same day I have always been able to get an appointment at DMC in Crystal Palace Road, however I agree that it is sometimes impossible to get through on the phone at 8am as they are permanently engaged. I'm lucky that I only live round the corner so can just walk round at 8am, though I can see that if you don't work flexible hours that would be difficult. The two weeks' waiting time for a non-urgent appointment does seem excessive, but then if it's not urgent I don't think it's too big a deal. And you can also ask for a telephone appointment (although again not ideal if you work, unless you work from home, because of confidentiality issues). ETA: I don't usually mind waiting beyond the time of my appointment because I know sometimes the GP may be dealing with an emergency. I would be annoyed if I thought the wait was avoidable, though.

We'd obviously need to choose the music quite carefully as it needs to be loud enough for nobody to worry about kids running around and making a noise. There are other practical issues, not least that we have a very full schedule of gigs and Singarounds already this year, plus various other community events, and we'd like at least a few weekends free to see the grandchildren (who don't live in London)!!!! I'll have a word with the other half of The Goose aka FlapJackDavey and we'll see what we can do. Maybe we'll try one afternoon and see how many people come. It would obviously need to be worthwhile for the musicians. There are three community events coming up this year which have music in the afternoon and which children can come to: Sunday 13 May is the Dulwich Festival Fair on Goose Green, when we will be providing music all afternoon, as last year. Sunday 3 June is the Crystal Palace Road Street Party, ditto - all are welcome even if you don't live in Crystal Palace Road (just hope we don't get torrential rain this year :))) And sometime probably in August, there is the Aquarius Festival at the golf course, but we don't have a date or details for that yet. We have had an indoor stage there for the past two years but there will be an outdoor stage as well - thus catering for all weather eventualities (and musical tastes)! :)-D ETA: Musicians for all the above are still to be confirmed - but they'll be good!

Has happened to me in the past on AOL, I changed my password and have had no problems since. Touch wood :) Although AOL (or possibly the receiving server) blocked some of my outgoing emails for a while afterwards which was a bit of a nuisance, but it was only for a matter of days.

My daughter and grandchildren got ukuleles from me last Christmas so they could form their own ukulele band :))

Thanks everybody who came, we hope you all enjoyed it. The community garden made over ?1500 altogether, including ticket sales, which was brilliant. Those of you with kids, would you like us to put on further Sunday afternoon indoor music events? When we did a survey a year or so back nobody seemed interested in this, but that was possibly because the people who would have been interested were not at the evening event we gave out the survey at (grammar)!

We do hope to see lots of you at DHFC tomorrow, in a nice warm cosy room listening to some brilliant music all day and into the evening, buying raffle tickets and cakes, and helping your new community garden at the same time! You will be able to see the plans for the garden, and talk to some of the people involved - and volunteer to help if you feel like some outdoor exercise in 2012!

There is a folk choir starting on Tuesday 31 January which will practice Upstairs At The EDT if that sounds the sort of community activity you would be into.
