Oops, I am rubbish with numbers, I think its the INR 50 notes that are the same as the blue 500s. (I'll get my pashmina :-$ ) Also, reading KK's post above (tu) makes me think that people who have lived in India for a considerable length of time (and managed it!) will likely have a very different perspective from someone who has visited for a holiday or shorter visits. -

Zeban - your post made me laugh out loud about the tea tasting like coffee and vice versa! I used to work in India and whilst visiting a university, that's exactly what the professor said to me :) You're soooo right that its a love it or hate it type of place. Philby - I adore India ( am probably very biased). Varanasi is very full on and India is daunting to the newcomer at the best of times. It can be overwhelming with all the crowds everywhere and its soooooooo noisy (but you get used to it). Quick tips - change your larger Rupee notes into smaller denominations, Rs 20 and 10 are very handy. You can easily confuse some of the blue Rs 5000 for a blue Rs 1000. These are very handy for tipping everyone here and there. There are certain brands of water that are best to use. A little local language goes a long way and lots of smiles all round. It can also be a very frustrating place, particularly giving directions to auto drivers and getting anywhere on time. Don't try and do too many things in one day. I have hundreds more (will PM) but all in all, a truly fabulous country and people :)) (Read some Mark Tully if you have time...) -

It's a very common situation to find oneself in. All he needs to do is use Monopoly money like everybody else* Then I guarantee that a REAL person will contact your dear husband. *Unless you used Disney Dollars?

Can North Africa become the new South America?

I'm sure the intention was to start a (decent)* debate? resources = money = greater chance of corruption I guess. I'm not sure what the outcome in Egypt, there seems to be disillusion with all sides * (apologies for getting sidetracked on energy issues for the region) -

That's jolly decent of you Sean, thanks :) I do think those who are complaining about the Co-Op on here should complain directly to them. Iceland isn't so bad, you can get lots of produve that's not frozen too. I love the independent shops though but that doesn't suit everyone. Although not on LL, Barrys shop is fantastic, opens late and does a huge range of things including those gu/fru deSserts people mentioned before. The staff are lovely and get to know you. I'd vote for a Barrys onLL too ;) I thought all the Waitrose "aspirations" talked about on the forum were a running joke, clearly not.

Can North Africa become the new South America?
katie1997 replied to LadyDeliah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think that oil is important to North Africa although I guess this is more about corruption and lack of freedom (as MP says). I thought that in Lady Deliah's post, they were hoping that any revenue received from the oil (and gas!) industry would be put to good use by those in power rather than comparing with Venezuela in size of oil reserves? I could be wrong. Interesting to know where those figures on oil reserves are from? (Assume these are proven and currently producing, not including potential or possible?) Algeria has commercial gas production too, two large gas fields and they don't allow foreign-owned companies as much of a stake in their natural resources as before. There is interest in this region for exploration and development. You only need to look at the geology, not saying its the new Libya tho... There are important mineral resources in these countries - useful for new and developing technologies. Venezuela has gone massively down the hydroelectric route (and with shortages of water) Mitchk - how do you know that LadyDeliah has never been to Venezuela? -
Tarot, I don't tend to base my knowledge or understanding of any subject from watching a single TV programme/documentary about it.

Dunno Sue - depends what it is and how much it affects your life. If its just things like going into a shop and completely forgetting what you went in for...I'd say that's pretty common (for me anyway).

Watt exactly are you trying to say?

If I were Tarot, I'd be incandescent at the way this is going....

Well, Pearson, normally I'd attach a link to the thread but I'm feeling a bit dim (arf arf) ...
