  1. Not sure I agree with you Bob. Whether they volunteered or were conscripted it still amounts to a sacrifice by them and the families who sent them (whether actual death or just the hardships of war) which I don't think should be forgotten. It's easy 60 years down the line to be complacent which is why I think an annual remembrance is a good idea. And of course it is not only WWs I & II. I once worked with an amazing man who served with the Green Jackets in Borneo and lost his leg after stepping on a landmine. He still visits servicemen today who are similarly injured, to encourage them to lead a full and rewarding life which is not easy when you think your country doesn't give a damn.
  2. If it's songs in films that make one cry I have to bid for the "Marseillaise" in 'Casablanca' - gets me every time.

  4. Our shoulders are broad - frankly, we don't care.
  5. If the postings go off-thread then it is generally lounged but as your posting was thread-specific, no worries. Welcome aboard.
  6. Some outside the EDT but that may be too far down.

  8. I live on Adys Road and there has been increased activity recently. It's usually minxy little vixens screaming their wares. They live in the churchyard at St John's. I'm up for the Peckham Foxhunter Stakes if anyone cares to join me.
  9. Paragon said > > Looking forward to seeing the hamlet play in the > coming weeks. Will you stop feeding me lines like this - it's very hard to resist.
  10. Shouldn't you be on honeymoon?
  11. It's an anagram of Air Zone!
  12. If you are pining for pie and mash go to Manze's on the corner of Peckham Park Road and Peckham High Street. Been in the biz for umpteen years. [personally I think it's disgusting, but horses for course]
  13. Driving a dog cart and being Miss Marple a la Rutherford
  14. Never heard of - give me details pleaseeeeeeeee.
  15. I love old literature and it saddens me that "gay" is not used in it's original sense - it's such an evocative word. And my daughter was born on a Sunday so I love quoting: "the child that is born on the Sabbath day, is bonny and blithe and good and gay" - that really doesn't go down too well with today's teens!
  16. I remember being mortified when my child minder reported that my 2 year old had fallen over and muttered "Oh bugger".
  17. Enters and points out to Keef that 'loking' should be verboten now that he is about to be spliced.
  18. Picked up a set of Penguin classic crimes in a charity shop recently. They are all 1940s stuff and are ripping reads. Authors I've never heard of but am enjoying immensely: "The Franchise Affair" by Josephine Tey is a good mystery with romantic undertones and a wonderful denouement. "The Moving Toyshop" by Edmund Crispin I am quarter of the way through and am laughing out loud at. I've nicked Annaj's reaction to "Paula" by Isabel Allende which she got at the ED book swap to entice you waverers to the next one at the George Canning on Monday night: "Quite unlike anything I have ever read. A mother's letter to her daughter while she lies in a coma, which evolves into her autobiography. All true, completely stunning and unexpectedly political. If I can bring myself to let it go I'll bring to pass on."
  19. I've watched that film so many times and still don't get it. I much prefer Pete Postlethwaite (great name) in Brassed Off which also makes me cry.
  20. I wish hats for gentlemen and ladies would have a revival - something so Celia Johnson about it.
  21. Does Ophelia know Hamlet's playing away?
  22. Scor46 - I am limited and very conformist and a sucker for a french accent. PCG
  23. I think Nicholas (?) is great. I frequently march in and ask for a robust red under a fiver and the charming French chap always obliges. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean supermarket. G&B were slightly more snooty at the same request so I tend to avoid it (this was before they branched into next door so maybe they've changed).
  24. My rule of thumb is under ?5 and have a large dimple underneath. Flat-bottomed ones are invariably awful.
