  1. Not me, I'm a motorcyclist
  2. Well the next nearest one is in the Tesco's in either direction so let's hope it's not another little Tesco!
  3. They close the doors when it is windy or raining, apparently. Unlike the busses they replace you can get on at the front as well. What's the problem?
  4. I think there are stables nearby. And yes let's remember that not all of us are familiar with the area or what passes for normal.
  5. Is there still a pub called something like The Star near Great Ormond Street? Am I in the wrong area? I believe that pub had some record for having the most beers on sale, at some time or another.
  6. There has been money awarded to make the buildings along there smarter; doing them up a bit. This work has been a long time promised, but it is here and being spent. When finished - and with nice new shops opening - that village is going to be even lovelier. And to think it hasn't even got its own postcode.
  7. And the new locksmith/cobbler - his new shop is full of welcome cards many from the other shops along Evelina Road. Now that's neighbourliness! Oh, and it's his birthday today (4th Feb!).
  8. Deal. Got voted best villagey town or something. Broadstairs. Hmm, very expensive now though. Ramsgate - cheaper but still nice. Whitstable, forget it! Hernia Bay - indeed. What about Rye? Some ideas, anyway.
  9. She used to present the morning show with Danny Baker on GLR* Those were the days..... Now it's BBC London Ninety Four Point Nine doncha know.
  10. Now, WHEN is it being unveiled! Lots of us want to be there!
  11. What an amazing image, and I hasten to add, I do love those 1940s coats on the women!
  12. It has appeared in Locationx3 and now I hear that an Independent Estate Agent is setting up shop soon AND a new Branch of Rye Books, along Evelina Road.
  13. I have, "Sent from my Commodore 64".
  14. How many local history books have you gone through? I can't believe they escaped photography. If John Beasley or the lovely man at the bookstore bottom of Lordship lane hasn't written about or got a photo of it, then you have a new project!
  15. Yes, someone started another thread on this ;) ;)
  16. I must watch Corrie later. I don't watch soaps but - yaknow - it's what I do as a Celebrant. What is important about arranging a funeral is that it is all about choice, and maybe they all agree to get to the Crematorium separately, and sometimes people find it difficult to think about bearing the coffin. (It becomes difficult of course if they're all different heights!) LOVE that coffin, I did one a month ago with one in the Arsenal theme (I think each of the major teams sell their copyrighted logo coffins now). And - my Dad was in REME!
  17. Came across the Museum of Childhood recently. Near Bethnal Green off the A11. Must go there. We are soooo lucky living in London!
  18. So good to hear from one of the artists and SO sorry that it costs more than you are getting! I think any references to people, times, objects whatever that the carving represents should be well publicised. You implied it's still going on (your tenses were in the present...!) but there's the Councillor reckoning it is done! Good luck and thanks for your hard work (having seen many glimpses!)
  19. It's not just religion, it's testosterone. MT had both as does TB. A short true story. An American friend of mine lives on her own on an island. When she was 98, she was taken poorly and taken to the mainland. They asked her what day it was, where she thought she was, and who was the President. She got the first two, and refused to answer the third. Getting very concerned for her mental health they kept asking her. Finally, she yelled out, "Don't make me name that son of a bitch". (It was Geroge Dubbya). She's about 101 now and doing fine.
  20. Who TF are the Unmentionables?
  21. I reckon market forces in the area mean Southwark Council may persuade the Dulwich Estate to allow Tesco or whomever to build a drive through / park local store there. Or, of course, it could be a Wetherspoons....! But I heard a rumour of an M&S ... (Sorry couldn't resist)
  22. You could have given us a link! Instead, I have, here: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/social-housing-landlords-cheated-by-repair-firm-mears-group-tribunal-hears-9085454.html
  23. Challenge them. And remember that ?30k does not buy windows for a flat, ours is a 2 bed on a peninsular of a block, ie. windows on 3 sides plus French windows on to a private balcony, and they did new doors. Price in 2009 ?8,500 ish. So challenge everything and ALSO be ACTIVE in your estate and attend the weekly site office meetings which will be held in the builders' site offices on the estate, and if you can not attend them demand to see the Minutes of the same. On our estate only two of us ever attended those meetings and they were invaluable.
  24. I am always trying to be a 'now' person, but when I first moved here in 1983 what is now The Actress was a Rock pub which often had lots of big bikes outside it and my little 200cc would join them. The music was great. But now I love it as it is but admit I don't go down there every night. And for those of you like Louisa who seems to revel in the past especially in Peckham I do recommend you join The Peckham Society which seeks to keep the memories of Peckham alive especially for older people who may not live here anymore... Oh, and Primark took over where BHS left off!
  25. Oh and good for you for posting! Another idea would be to just wrap up and stand outside and give them away, being a good advert for your own place!
