Official animal lover/animal welfare thread
PeckhamRose replied to aquarius moon's topic in The Lounge
"but what about the in-appropriate abattoirs" What about them? I tell you one thing, I think it is bad enough the way chickens are treated for use by Kentucky Fried Chicken but my friend (ok I will be dead honest, NOT my friend, it was ME, having my annual fast food fix whilst I was out on the road all day), went to KFC by Brick lane and there was a leaflet saying it was all halal chicken. So now they're not even stunned before they're killed. I couldn't be doing with that so walked right out again. Honest I did. Then I heard that 80% of New Zealand lambs are killed using Halal method, but that they are stunned (there was a documentary about it a few weeks ago). They can't be stunned AND labelled Halal and that was the point of the article. I have to confess, I cook meat because it's quick and I don't particularly like cooking, and am not very inventive. But I do see myself moving more towards trying to think harder and thus acting upon my feelings towards becoming a vegetarian. Wish me luck. -
East Dulwich Rd & Peckham Rye junction
PeckhamRose replied to richfish's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well done and thanks DJKQ. TfL monitored that junction, the other PeckhamRye SE22 junction AND the Gowlett Road junction (I think it was that one) a few years ago. They reported at the community council then, too. And heard our concerns. Before those traffic lights went in you turned right when you could (ie coming from East Dulwich to turn right either up towards Clockhouse SE22 side or up towards Brockley SE15 side of the park), ie. when there was nothing coming from Nunhead. Now you have a lot less (legal) opportunity to make that right turn. And because there is often so much traffic coming from Nunhead which often itself crosses its own lights, in turn trying to turn right whether it's me on a motorcycle or the 484 bus, the only time we can turn right is after the light has turned red. It's not right, I am not proud, but there simply should be filter lights there at least. Still, fining us will make it all better, won't it. I shall email Simon Phillips myself too, since I could not make the meeting. (DJKQ My meeting was much duller!) -
If you are not overtaking anyone why were you in the middle lane? That is not good driving. I don't care that you may have been maintaining a 70mph speed. If you weren't overtaking you should have been in the left lane. I see this all the time on motorways. Someone doing 70 stuck in the middle lane and if someone UNDERtakes them because there's too much traffic to OVER take them, then they're in the wrong. Go to the meeting tonight about those lights those junctions everyone! I shall be at another different meeting sadly dammit!

There is certainly money to be made as a writer. Just set up a writing class.... Sounds cynical but quite true. Check out shootingpeople.org.uk writers bulletins and see that about 80% of the posts on the average day are for courses! The wonderful character of Ed Reardon (BBC Radio 4) teaches us all we need to know.... I would, however, recommend joining a script writing group. Player-Playwrights ScriptTank are two of the best in my humble opinion. I am a member of both and a committee member of P-P so a tad biased. You have the opportunity to have scripts* read / performed by professional actors and then everyone discusses their merits and offers constructive professional criticism. Usually. * not blogs, sorry!

East Dulwich Rd & Peckham Rye junction

"P.S. the timings are ridiculously tight for traffic on E Dulwich Road turning right in either direction. Certainly under 3 seconds." Exactly! That's why it is important for people who agree to go to council meetings to persuade them to improve it. -
Oooh good book recommendation! Shall hunt it down immediately.

People by and large become what they think about themselves
PeckhamRose replied to Mick Mac's topic in The Lounge
It is about becoming what you think about yourself. So if you think you have the talent and hair and accent of Cheryl Cole without actually being her... No, still wouldn't want that. I think of myself as lucky. Some days with the word UN in front. But this seriously is a heavy question and I would like to hear some philosophers' views about this, too, but I don't think we have any on this site! Lots of amateur ones tho! -
The play is the thing. The famous actor is secondary. I had tickets a year in advance for Madame de Sade with Judi Dench. A year in advance, mind. She had tripped on the steps outside the theatre the night before and her role was played by an understudy when we attended. And the play was still shite. I both write and act and the play is always always always the thing. With one, in my opinion, exception! Little Voice was written for Jane Horrocks. And nobody not nobody could play that role but her. So maybe if a play is written with someone in mind who is unique in themselves (and to my mind Jane Horrocks is a unique fab actress), and they don't appear then I would be irritated, but for most of the time I would always say the Play is the thing.

I think I'm fabulous. I hope to become so. When I was a teenager I thought I was fat. And now I am! So that works then. -
Did someone mention cake?

So does PeckhamRose if you can wait for her to get UP.

tomchance thanks for alerting us to the meeting. I hope to make it but fear I shall be working. ALL YOU ABOVE who can go to this should go to this!! Complaining on here does nothing about it. -
What's wrong with ebay? (Just asking!)

My body is going to the London Anatomy Office for medical students to learn from / play with. I have written to the council (someone had to) and will post their reply when I get it.

I was there too at the Community Council and can vouch for all of what DJKQ said. I do also wish that all of you who so regularly in here grumble at the situation would actually go to a council meeting and discuss your fears. They can't ignore all of us. I am so sorry a biker was injured, and tremble - as I have been involved in many near misses myself simply trying to turn right at traffic lights! -
Oh okay. And people believe that stuff? Anyway, I am looking forward to hearing about Southwark Council's policy. Maybe they'll put it on the website.

Bellenden Belle yes me too! Good ol' GLR. I am sad to hear this. He's fab.

Just a tiny point of information - in the London Borough of Newham, motorcyclists are indeed allowed to join the cyclists at the front at the traffic lights. It makes perfect sense to do so. We're gone before you know it, unless of course we stall like I did the other day. Yikes! VERY blushing embarrassed PeckhamRose with a hundred angry motorists behind me!

It's an important subject. If you go to a cremation ceremony it is true that when the curtain closes the cremation does not happen immediately but DOES happen the same day. When you get the ashes back in the urn you see the date on the urn being the same date you ceremoniously 'said goodbye' to your loved one. To have a different date would - I should have thought - be quite upsetting to those who then wonder where the body was left for a few days. I am interested in this thread and will be interested in the outcome. Thank you for alerting us. I do Humanist ceremonies so am professionally interested too!

Pull The Other One Nov 26th 2010 Boothby Graffoe
PeckhamRose replied to vivienne's topic in The Lounge
Ohhh we like Boothby Graffoe. Will try and make that one vivienne! -
Mr PR and I were together for 18 years and I discovered that if one of us died the other one would not be entitled to their pension rights, so I thought that's a tad unfair. So we got married. It meant little as far as our relationship went and was just a sort of political thing really, but we decided to make something of it. We had already booked Charlton House Park or whatever it is called in Somerset for a splashy weekend away and so decided to use that as our honeymoon. We wrote to seven of our closest friends and told them to meet us at the Petrol Station on peckham Road with no cameras and no dressing up. Five turned up, two on bikes. We were dressed in leathers as we were going straight to Somerset after. We met them at the petrol station and they had no idea what was happening - (I've done this sort of thing before - arranged something fun like all of them going up Tower 42 in the evening for a drink, or theatre or something - so they knew to expect something fun) - but then I simply walked them across the road to the registry office. The two who were unable to make it still didn't know till afew months later! Great day. I agree with others above. Do what you want and I love the one where your friend takes you aside and says, "This is your day, enjoy it". Mr PR has been a professional photographer for years and has taken many wedding photos and could write a book about the nightmares involved! We have no wedding photos. Just the memories!

... I have just woken up after that margarita... No-one addressed the other inadequacy of the poor paying more for their gas and electricity because they have 'keys' when the rest of us can afford to pay out of our regularly-ish upkept bank accounts and thus secure a cheaper rate. OK, wrong thread. Back to bed.
