Camberwell Grove rail bridge consultation
edcam replied to CityMum's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Big yawn re "Southwark cyclists". Cycling up and down CG was fine when the bridge was open. We did it for several years until we moved round the corner, both before and during the last width restriction. James Barber - I don't think anyone is lobbying for unrestricted access. There should definitely be a width restriction, the street can't cope with larger vehicles. Cars and bikes are fine but this attempt to hijack the consultation by the irritating cycle lobby is an irrelevance. -

So the best solution here is to reopen the Grove, so that the traffic burden is shared. The number of people in the area who own cars is irrelevant here. wulfhound Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > So just to be clear, we mostly agree that traffic > is undesirable (even those who claim not to mind > it aren't exactly queueing up to encourage more on > their own road), and yet most people are unwilling > to cut back on contributing to said problem, or to > support measures encouraging or compelling others > to cut back? > > It's like complaining about the amount of litter > on the street yet being unwilling to inconvenience > yourself slightly to put your own rubbish in a > bin. -

Yes, because the road will still be a public highway, albeit only partly accessible. Let's hope it doesn't come to that though. nxjen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If Camberwell Grove is permanently closed and part > of the public highway becomes inaccessible to many > road users, will Southwark Council still be > responsible for maintenance, road sweeping and > lighting? -

This is a great argument for reopening Camberwell Grove. Granted, it's also residential but it's more of a main artery than the roads which are currently clogged up by its closure. Reopening would even things out greatly. But it won't lead to traffic calming measures in the surrounding area. Current conditions show that very clearly. I suspect the threads will be merged but as I said on the other thread, we used to live on the Grove and have experienced it closed, open to all traffic, open only to cars. I think the vocal minority living on the Grove is really quite small but it's vital that people take part in the consultation and lobby to reopen it (to cars only.)

I added my voice. It should definitely be reopened. We used to live on Camberwell Grove and were there when it closed before, so have experienced it open to all traffic, open only to cars and closed to all traffic and I can tell you it was much easier all round when it was only open to cars and that's how it should be again. I'm baffled by Beulah's comment above, as this situation has turned all the surrounding roads into rat runs and much more overloaded ones than Camberwell Grove ever was. I don't know how anyone living nearby could think it was a good idea to keep it shut. -

Sounds horrible. What park was this please? -

That was hardly an "each way punt". Perhaps you find less wanky language hard to comprehend? -

A slightly overblown analysis there from Lee Scoresby but I can't disagree. This sounds highly suspect to me. Yes, Southwark Council, of course dog owners are ultimately responsible for their pets but if hazardous/toxic materials are lying around in public areas, it's cause for concern for more than just dog owners. If the answer is more sinister then it needs to be investigated. -

How awful. I do hope she makes a full recovery. -
I also agree that ToastED has been the best restaurant in ED since it opened. I hope this change doesn't affect their unusual and always interesting menu.

Fladda reopened last week and I can confirm that the fish and chips are excellent. Not at all soggy (the poster above must have visited when they had teething problems.) Good value and the best in the area; even better than The Flying Fish, which we have missed since it closed. Highly recommended.

Agree with all that Dulwich Fox says above.

Shame they still use animals for entertainment.

I have never found it to be too salty. Yes, sounds like London life might not be for you.

Yes, the side bread and onion dish are like crack. I haven't been to K&W for years, so can't give an opinion of recent offerings but they were always bog standard British kebab when I went there regularly in my younger days. Hisar were way ahead of them when they opened but once we discovered FM Mangal I'm afraid we never went back to Hisar (although they were the best in ED at the time and probably still are.) binkylilyput Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > FM Mangal certainly the best I have tried in SE > London (obviously there are other areas of London > better known for Turkish restaurants- Green > Lanes)- has widespread great reviews too. > > The "pita" bread and fried onion dish mentioned > is, I assume, the complementary Turkish spiced > pide bread which has been toasted on the mangal > and served with the charred onion dipping > sauce.....I could happily fill myself on this it > is so tasty. I don't think so. Mangal is a middle eastern word for barbecue, so pretty common among the names of similar businesses. JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What about the one on Rye Lane - Flamin Mangal > (must be linked)

Dulwich Fox - if you think that's a bad restaurant you really are a worry. It's the best Turkish restaurant in South London and none of what you describe above relates in any way to the food in FM Mangal. Edited to add - I've also been to Turkey many times, which is somewhat irrelevant in this discussion.

Worth making the trip to Camberwell for FM Mangal, which is fantastic.

Good grief, so much pain could have been saved if you'd got the reg no right in the first place! ;-) -
I didn't make any suggestions, these places had already been mentioned above.
