this is speculation but I wonder if there was an environmental health issue. The only thing I can find is a report from 2005 here Scores on the Doors. May be they could not rectify the 'Structural' issues and had to close (? not cost effective). If not this then maybe they could not sustain the large portions that they apparently served and just 'went under'.

Thats the same house on Dunstans isn't it?

That is very interesting susyp and it is a shame you had such a poor experience. Just to clear something up - Virgin did not takeover ntl. ntl/Telewest bought the mobile arm of Virgin but as Virgin is such a strong brand they rebranded. I have had significant issues at times but have always persevered with them and got a conclusion i have just phoned them actually to complain about an intermittant prolem with the EPG (electronic program guide) which has been a problem for a while (for me at least). The guy I spoke to was very apologetic and has even credited me with ?15. it appears that there is a known problem with the EPG which will run until the end of October. It would take a lot to convince me to change to BT and an ADSL broadband connection and Sky is too expensive.

there are large areas of East Dulwich which have only just been upgraded. The cable is from the old videotron network which was bad and I guess they are having problems due to this. I am not defending them and I know their customer service is shoddy at best. I have been with Virgin/ntl for 9 years now and it is actually better now! In my opinion 'cable' broadband far outstrips 'ADSL' broadband (i.e. through a BT line) due to the technology involved. With ADSL your speed and sevice relies significantly on how many others are on it and how far you are from the local exchange (closer the better!) I would perservere - I have 20mb broadband on Virgin and it is FAST (I have 4 computers connected). The only issues I have had over the last years for example are mainly due to drop outs connected with work going on in ED. Freeview is OK but you cannot get the premium channels SKY is excellent for the first year (but expensive) and if your box goes wrong after the year the customer has to pay for repairs - not good. With Virgin you rent the equipment so if it goes wrong (not often) they will just swap it out! No I do not work for them but I have a good deal and just offering my opinion.

It would be quite ironic if Kerry Katona where to be involved in its opening as it is opposite Iceland - she has been the face of Iceland for some time!

when they phoned this morning they said the centre was closed. Looking at the website suggests the whole centre is closed Crystal Palace Sports Centre

Crystal Palace Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre charge ?42 for first consultation then ?36.50/30mins thereafter. ?50 is quite expensive -
I figured it was something like asbestos and not a planned closure. We have paid for the course swimming lessons until the end of term (mid december) which would suggest the centre would not be closing fully for the refurb. It sounds like they started preparatory work and discovered the stuff.

I know a lot of ED people use the sports centre. We use it every week for our girls swimming lessions. It is currently completely closed for 'circumstances beyond our control'. Does anyone have any idea why its closed? Have they found asbestosor something or is there a different Health and Safety issue (I would imagine that it is a H&S issue)?

when we moved from ED to Nunhead a few years ago we used Harradines who were excellent. The came and had a look at our stuff so they could give use the quote. A couple of days before our move and nice chap came along with lots of boxes and packed for us. I would recommend them.

where is this gym? -
ooooh... what about when it is dark outside. One way glass is great when it is brighter on the outside but when darker on the outside it becomes seethrough. Wonder if the same thing happens with these?

best pub in East Dulwich for watching football

HeHe! ;-) Up the Saints Actually to be honest I think you are right - it should be a very tight game. I may even watch it myself. I am on cable and have hired Sky Sports for the next month or so as there a a few matches on Sky I want to watch (including tomorrow). I used to go to the Ivy House but tend to dip in and out of Sky now. Thats the beauty of cable - you can subscribe to sports for as long as you like (so long as the first month is a full month) so you can ditch it again after a couple of months and resubscribe a few months later. -
Ahhh. got my bearings now - I was talking about the area that sainsburys had owned. As I said on a different thread, I had my wedding reception there in 1990 but since then Sainsburys swapped it with Kings for the area on Dog Kennel hill. Kings now use it for the various sports and social activities. Sorry for the confusion - when Dulwich Hamlet was mentioned I assumed the football club (there is still an open space behind the store)
-
Previously the field where sainsburys car park is belonged to Kings but they did a swap and Kings now own the Griffin Sports Ground in Dulwich Village instead. What I was saying was that I think they got the whole site in the deal INCLUDING the area where Dulwich Hamlet Football Club is. I am pretty sure that Sainsburys also own the park/green area on Dog Kennel Hill and have it as a park in order to appease thSouthwark Council
-
I have a feeling that they own the whole site and that the footy club are just lease holders.

6 Lordship Lane (& other shop planning applications)
zephyr replied to Nero's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I moved to the area in 1987 and got married in 1990. The Sainsburys site was at the time owned by Kings College Hospital. We had our wedding reception at the Griffin in Dulwich Village which was then owned by Sainsburys. About a year or so after this Sainsburys did a deal with Kings whereby they swapped grounds. Sainsburys was then built on the old Kings rugby pitch. number 6 lordship lane is on the corner opposite Neros (and next to the florist) -
Our Windows are regularly cleaned by a nice chap (in Nunhead). Saying that I think his daugther has taken over the business and we only see him if we are out and he pops round to collect. He is reputable and only charges ?4 for the front of the house. We have a victorian terrace with bay windows upstairs and downstairs. Unless you have a huge mansion ?10 is way way too much. I remember before using our current window cleaner someone else quoting us ?10 for front and ?10 for back. When this particular person did turn up he spent 2 hours doing a few windows and asked for a cheese sandwich for lunch!! Told him no so he went off (he said for something to eat) and never return.

As I sais before I am in favour of the lights as it makes driving across Forest Hill road alot less hazardous. There will obviously be more peope against the lights as I would suggest that many more people use the junction driving along Forest Hill Road than across it. I can understand the objection as I drove along there today at 4.30pm - there was a huge queue not helped but the 25second lights phase.

I bought a set of oven gloves (I did need some desperately). I did look up the name of the organisation but it drew a blank. The organisation for Homeless and unemployed People I kept the label as shown in the picture I have attached (if you can see it)
-
These ights are great as we have to use the junction to take the kids to school and back again. Crossing Forest Hill Road has always been a nightmare in a car. Even if the lights go I do not want the raised entrance to Colyton Road back as it can be quite dangerous if you are on a motorbike due to the way you have yo approach it. I say keep them.
