West Dulwich LTN Action Group - needs your support
malumbu replied to Rashmipat's topic in Roads & Transport
It had already been posted. We've already looked at it. Calm down.. I could find you Andrew Gilligan's opinion piece if you line. -
General comment in response to the title - "Up your Arsenal" Sue I expect things have worsened since 2015, Labour veering to the right was not on the cards then.

Hmm, where did you get that from. The court judgment draws on silly 'war on woke' draft guidance under Sunak's last stand. If you made everything that the council did that was controversial subject to community agreement then nothing would get done. And this could be extended to national infrastructure such as pylons and wind farms. Very much the way Reform expects to do things. Do you agree with the Guardian on anything? Or are you Times or Telegraph, not sure how their respective politics differs. -

It would be useful to have some perspective, it is silly to say that there are people who want to turn every road into a pedestrian crossing. -

It's an opinion, I expect many opinions from the lay person are not balanced, and will generally be influenced how this affects you and/or friends and family. Although I am impressed with AI to date as generally it present both sides of the story without opinion, until it of course learns how my brain works and gives me the answer I want! -

It's an opinion piece, the Guardian includes these even the article does not agree with the general views expressed by the paper. They had one praising LTNs, for example, by Andrew Gilligan -

Thanks, it's good to have such a positive view 😊 -
Absolutely, another coalition was nailed on with the bookies, three big factors, Tories playing it very cute with constituents in marginal seats, LDs being punished for tuition fees and not pushing Tories harder, and Milliband's public persona in particular the right wing media. irrespective of unnecessary austerity the country would have been in a better place if there had been another coalition.

I expect that Earl, Ex and no doubt some others are pretty knowledgeable on the subject and take time to read up. I doubt if any of us work for Southwark, I don't and have no connections. I expect we are also keen to learn; whilst disappointed with one element of the JR I'm interested to see how this pans out. I don't think that this will affect other but we shall see. What bothers me when I get up in the morning? Exactly what I am seeing on the News at this moment (Palastine), other global conflict, the lurch to the right, climate change. Not closed roads and road user behaviour. That doesn't mean that I am not concerned about air quality, road safety and the like having worked in this field for more than a decade Of course the lurch to the right affects what happens at a local level. -
En Root, 'plant powered Indian fusion' - description is more pretentious than this small chain, is wonderful. Cheap and relatively cheerful. Not sure if it has been reviewed by the Times @Eats Dulwich have you visited? https://enrootldn.co.uk/ Urbanspoon used to be a great place for reviews of cafes ('greasy spoons') but apparently not so good since it was taken over by Zomato Best Spoons in the area is Parkside Cafe on Forest Hill Road, from Uber Eats: Parkside Cafe, positioned in the charming area of East Dulwich in London, specialises in hearty breakfast and brunch offerings. It holds an impressive customer rating of 5.0, reflecting its popularity, particularly in the mornings. The cafe features a menu replete with traditional breakfast fares such as rolls (including varieties like Bacon and Egg Roll, Sausage Roll), burgers (such as the Chicken Fillet Burger and Cheese Burger), and a selection of sandwiches and baguettes. Popular items among patrons include Beans, Chips, Two Crusty Slices, and a Latte, with the Bacon and Egg Sandwich and Chicken Fillet Burger frequently ordered together. Surely AI is now starting to take over on restaurant reviews!

I'm still sceptical as the starting point is "something has to be done" whereas the most vocal opposition want schemes stopped, and feel that they can only go ahead if there is a referendum. They seem to say that they are bothered by air quality, congestion, road safety and the like, but I've need seen viable alternative proposals. OneDulwich would not engage with me when I asked. Sunak's culture wars/'war on wokes' didn't help. The motorists' charter did not get a lot of traction and quietly disappeared https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/29/rishi-sunak-plan-for-motorists-would-limit-travel-choices-campaigners-say But draft guidance to local authorities along the lines of a referendum on every decision that affected motorists is one of the main arguments on the JR outcome. Anyway, even with Labour moving to the right they have not got involved in all this, so hopefully that will remain the case. I recall under Blair much changed for the better in taking controversial decisions forward, for example nuclear operators and government would meet with local groups, and with Greenpeace/FoE to discuss what to do with existing nuclear waste. Something had to be done and to be it is exactly the same with reducing road traffic. Starmer just wants to get on with stuff.... I don't see him sitting down with Reform to discuss wind farms.... -
Make a note of the vehicle details, complain to the company and then complain to the council copying your councillor in.

All sounds good in principle but I don't know if this would work. Firstly you need an agreed objective eg stop the rat running, reduce the number of journeys, reduce air pollution, reduce carbon emissions, increase active travel. The means to this - good citizenship (driving is habitual for many, or seen as a right, so encouraging people doesn't work that well). Economic measures - charging for the most polluting vehicles - done, works, but diminishing returns. Charging to park - this wont happen in many areas, certainly as you go out of zones 2 and 3, access charging - only in central London and wont be rolled out wider on a local level; straight forward economics - for many owning and driving a car that does predominantly local roads is more expensive than other means such as car clubs, public transport, walking and cycling. Yet most do not look at whole life costs of car ownership, 45p a mile or more. Incentives including improvements to active travel infrastructure and public transport. Yet.... My perception is as a nation most don't like change, don't see the bigger picture, very much conservative with a small 'c' and worse, seem to enjoy finding fault in many things. Which leads us onto restricting access to roads. And we know what happens then. I've worked in many fields where there are efforts to engage communities. Blair's government did much on this, pre 97 we thought of stakeholders as local citizens in vampire movies. I did work on Big Society, which as a concept continued Blair's work but that all unfolded. I'm just not convinced that the main opponents would come with an open mind to work constructively on solutions. But I've been saying much of this for the last four years, and sadly many still hold entrenched views. -
Indoor market in East Dulwich - Would you be interested?
malumbu replied to radnrach's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Looking at the Street Markets that I frequented in the past, and what happened to Borough Market and some new covered places close to the river, most now focus on quite up market (ie expensive) street food and artisan food. Northcross has gone similar in the last decade too. Makes a mockery of the cost of living crisis! Bermondsey, near the beer mile gone this way too. Not old school Bermondsey.... More downmarket I liked the grotty indoor market at the Elephant and will similarly some of the arcades in Peckham. As others have said its about the demographic and whether there is further demand, or is the market place is saturated? Do you have an anticipated USP? -

I wasn't going to comment until the dust settled and the impact better understood, eg would Lambeth challenge the decision, go through the earlier objection and deal with this etc. But all this talk of victory is irritating, particularly as the groups opposing LTNs and some of the most vocal on this site do not have alternative solutions to reducing traffic. I would rather you said that you wanted the status quo and don't believe or care about poor air quality and climate change rather than some sort of moral high ground. You will not get communities calling for and agreeing restrictions on private car journeys because when push comes to shove, like paying more tax, when changes affect you personally most will not be in favour. The celebrations remind me of when Bromley successfully challenged Ken Livingstone's fare's fair cuts to public transport fares in the 80s. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fares_Fair#:~:text=Fares Fair was a public, and rescinded the following year. I'm now keeping quiet until we all know more. -
I know someone who went to Dulwich College with him. It was a hard G. I'd love to know why he changed pronunciation to the continental way. Monsieur Neejal Farrrajeux

And a loss of habitat I expect. First question is why do you need one?

Cheers, we tend to go to the National now as much better value than the West End and no issues with restricted views . I'll message you separately about this play.

Brilliant watching the skateboarding competition briefly just now, in the sun. Loads of people out and a feel good atmosphere. Sadly I am too old to bounce around on concrete.

"Levels of racist attitudes have declined in recent decades, although structural disadvantages persist and hate incidents continue. Studies published in 2014 and 2015 suggested racist attitudes were on the rise in the UK, with more than one third of those polled perceiving they were racially prejudiced." This no doubt doesn't mean that all are racist, but it is still a sizeable number. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_the_United_Kingdom

Earl had already posted this, and with more information, rather than just echoing the BBC. -
My post was clear. You are talking about "supporters" and labelling a group of people. I expect like me that there are many, if not most, who are happy/accepted the square. But I wouldn't label us as supporters as it comes across as we are activists. You have done this elsewhere by the assumption that most cyclists are the 'cyclist lobby'. Just go the whole hog and call us all wokes. That is what is happening across the world with popularist politicians taking about the 'war on wokes'.

Good point. It may be a better use of your collective time to complain to Lime about badly parked bikes.
