  1. https://www.lse.ac.uk/granthaminstitute/news/the-truth-about-londons-ultra-low-emission-zone/ Interesting report by LSE on the ULEZ debunking some of the myths and fake news. Focus is on NO2 as this is primarily due to transport emissions. Particulates come from numerous sources including domestic burning of coal and wood. Even before the ULEZ most road vehicles came with particulate filters (diesel) and three way cats (petrol) that dealt with larger particles of soot. Age constraints on taxis and retrofitting older buses, was an important step Greater focus on finer particulates now.
  2. Rather than just dismiss what I have to say because it doesn't fit in with your narrative why don't you engage with what I have raised. This is the way you have behaved for several years. On your soap box but when points worthy of discussion are raised you fail to engage. It's daft lumping all cyclists together. Most of the public can differentiate between a parent on their bike taking their kid to school, a teenager riding to school through the Village to Kingsdale or Dulwich College, an older person pootling on their bike, and a supersized illegal ebike doing 25mph. Or would you as a cyclist like to be labelled as a the latter? Why on earth is that relevant? I have posted a thread on the joys of cycling, and one on cycle routes, both hijacked by the usual suspects complaining about cyclists. I add some balance to the numerous threads attacking cyclists. I could give you numerous examples of poor driving but life is too short. Haven't a clue why you posted this and what value it has to the discussion. I've never said drivers are a uniform group. I'm aware that some cyclists do daft things. I choose to look at the bigger picture as the benefits of cycling outweigh all the negativity on this forum. This us vs them stuff is so unhelpful.
  3. Athenlay are the best kids football team around here and have gone from strength to strength, They are just off the Rye (South side) https://athenlayfootballclub.org.uk/
  4. The worry is that if you target rich people (a) it doesn't generate a lot of revenue as numbers are relatively small it (b) supposedly drives away investors in the UK economy. Obviously for the reasons above it is the right thing to do on principle. The other way round I was vaguely involved many years ago in work looking at how big companies were shifting profit into offshore accounts, the usual suspects BVI, Bermuda and the like. And there's those that argue that is the nature of things to support our pension funds and investments and make the UK an attractive place to manage your money.
  5. Credible enough that a National newspaper reported it and that he didn't see them. Do you think he is a racist? Or to be more diplomatic that some of his party's policies meet the criteria of being racist?
  6. checked with a DC college and whilst they deny whistle blowing, apparently our Nige has an unpleasant past: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/nigel-farage-fascist-nazi-song-gas-them-all-ukip-brexit-schoolfriend-dulwich-college-a7185236.html It would be good to hear of fans of Mr Farige to say why he has been a victim. I'm with Lammy
  7. The 200 years is rather exaggerated but great that the ULEZ together with sustainable streets, better emissions standards and move to EVs has delivered. Ironic that more effective emissions standards was due in part to VW cheating. It's world, not EU or UK standards.
  8. Yes, I like the planting/planters
  9. They end up all over the world. There is a part of china where there is a massive recycling industry. I wish I could recall the article as it had percentages, the west, and South America, being pretty low as final destination. Not sure how many get sold on in country of origin/ownership
  10. You still haven't said what was wrong with his speech. Knowing some that went to school with Farige.... No I'll stop there.
  11. OMG, Greene King. How awful. Music may be fine.
  12. Why was it a disastrous speech? I watched the BBC news and then listened to some of the discussion and it didn't come across like this, You clearly hate Labour and everything they stand for. Have Your Say on the BBC website may be a better place for you to post your strong views.
  13. I expect, having not waded through scores of ping pong posts between you and Earl, this is about you focusing for a number of years on cyclists' behaviour. I'm not sure you have started threads on driver behaviour and I expect your posts on cyclists far outweighs anything you have said on dangerous driving.

    Digital ID

I don't think it is simple as that. Firstly many people born in the UK and legally allowed to live in the UK work for cash be it all of their working time or mates rates. Digital ID will make it easier to prove that someone is not legally allowed to work in the UK. It will also help where a company has an agreement with an individual who may be legal but permitted to sell on hours to others. And for those using fake driving licenses hiring mopeds to do deliveries. Obviously you have to catch them at it. How much of a deterrent this is to dodgy and reputable employers, and those with no right to work in the UK is unclear. But that question will be asked. On a separate matter poll tax was an awful idea and many in the then Tory party were not in board. This is not in the same league. And to go political how are you going to get your takeaways if there is nobody to make them and deliver them? Will be good for the more ethical companies.

@Insuflo Couldn't agree more - the whole focus on immigration. Wrote to Ellie yesterday on this saying in my peer group there are more important issues. Don't necessarily agree on other things you have posted but this is the forum at its best having real debate

A citizen poll put it at 37 for and 32 against. As for why I instinctively against it I expect that is the whole carrying papers business. Yet my internet use is already tracked and I carry a wodge of info. Like DP above I'm interested what we think as individuals rather than what Corbyn, Farige and others think

Most will be pragmatic apart from extreme nationalists who generally live in the UK rather than ROI. And gov is proposing cards for those with no smart phones. Best to read up on the subject rather than jump to conclusions It will, the extent and whether it is worth it is of course another question.
  18. Conversely I am stunned if I have to use cash on travel abroad. Most now take contactless, although the complexity of travelling by train in Germany is even worse than the UK often having three operators on a point to point journey.
  19. It was horrid. In your face brash decorating. Before that it was fine

    Digital ID

There are many digital systems that work very well for government. Most of us would not expect to fill out a form and post it. Credit due where credit is due. This I am sure post dates the NHS debacle. Corbyn has opposed virtually everything that governments propose including Labour. So you can ignore home. It is Liberty's job to oppose schemes like this. Government outsourced the running of the COVID testing for travellers entering England. It was dreadful. That's Barmy. The Romans drove on the left. We are correct. The rest of the world should rightly follow our lead. Whoops I've gone off topic in my win thread.
  21. Then I will have to deport you!

Steering clear of politics... whoops... odd that Tories and Farige are against this. Government has an excellent record of providing digital services, self assessment for example has improved ten fold since I first did it on line 20 years ago. Where they outsource it willy nilly that can be a disaster. The outsourcing of Covid testing for when you returned from abroad was appalling, clunky systems provided by AAAAAAA testing, based in outer space (US by the whole nature of the front end).
  23. Thanks, good to debate. Most cyclists who run red lights do not endanger themselves or others. They do it when there are no other road users at the junction. In terms of safety that is not a concern, The issue here is obeying the rules of the road and setting an example to other road users. As you say many drivers behaviour also lout the rules of the world. Cyclists and red lights doesn't keep me awake at night. Riding through pedestrian lights when there are people present is another issue, particularly at speed and with heavier bikes such as Lime and legal/illegal ebikes. The cyclist putting themselves at risk you could argue more fool you, but where there is impact with another road user, be it bike or motorised, there could be damage both physical and mental, and at worst the other road user could be vulnerable to abuse/attack (in this case the same as any other form of road rage).
  24. Really good news as assuming you are from the Southern half of the country you have to buy the 🍺 🍻 but North of Oxford then we treat you. 🎂
