  1. Didn't stop last night at DH coming up from Kent. Went right through to E&C from Shortlands. Adds that little extra something when you're coming home tired. Going down it skipped most of the stations between Bromley and Sevenoaks
  2. Our immediate neighbours are having a loft extension, opposite at the back are having a kitchen extension. Another garden touching ours hasn't had anyone setting foot in it for about 20 years and I think there are rats now. Late night gardening would come as a little light relief.
  3. There re worse things.
  4. Coming the other way, I've known trains not stop between Bromley and Denmark Hill, even if supposed to do so, when they were running late. I didn't mind, as it was a quick run to DH, but I would have been a trifle annoyed had I wanted to get off anywhere in-between
  5. The extreme end of not taking an interest in one's neighbours/surroundings that family on America where everyone knew there was something wrong but no-one felt they should ask questions or do anything about it.
  6. Very interesting, but more literary places could have been mentioned
  7. And then there's "I can't get my head round it" . !!!!!
  8. I often passed a sign on a field saying "Free range sausages". I like to think of them scampering about in the grass
  9. It's possible there might be second hand saris in Tooting?
  10. I don't know about second hand, but if I were looking for silk I'd go to Tooting. Lots of fabric shops
  11. Heard it this morning, very loudly. I'm surprised the battery still works.
  12. On one hand, I remember having to use LB at night years ago and it was a dreadful place to wait by yourself. Dark, empty, no staff around (as far as one could ever see). So all this is a vast improvement. But on the other, like everyone else, I always feel I've walked a lot farther than I need to, that's there must be a quicker route. And thank goodness Borough Market never went, I believe it's the oldest market in London
  13. The last sales at M&S in Croydon the tills weren't recognising the reduced prices. I wondered how many people thought they'd got a bargain because they hadn't checked their bills. I held up the queue because I noticed nothing had come through at the advertised price. I think the excuse was something about no-one re-setting the tills.
  14. "life after life" Kate Atkinson anything by Barbara Pym "Master and Commander" by Patrick O'Brian (then the other 19)
  15. Google Waifs and Strays east Dulwich and there's a lot on that one. I know a former inhabitant but he was only there as a baby so doesn't remember anything.
  16. There was a Church of England waifs and strays home in Overhill Rd. Then there were the group homes, that lasted at least till the 80s
  17. Sent a bulky letter this time last year, the recipient opened it and was greatly surprised to find entirely different contents. Important legal papers. Obviously someone had opened two big letters, on spec, and then put the contents back into the wrong envelopes. What the other recipient made of my letter we never found out. I couldn't make any official complaint because nothing of any actual value had been lost.
  18. Yes, ours has been on and off all day
  19. I believe you can't use Freedom passes at the ticket machine in Denmark Hill, if the office is closed?
  20. electric knife sharpener hand held vacuum cleaner torch (you can't find one when you want one, so never too many)
  21. Intexasatthe moment - there's a painting by Pissarro of Lordship Lane station. I think that was the line that ran alongside the Horniman and up through the woods by the golf course. There was the Dover Chatham line somewhere there, but I'm sure all the East Dulwich History and railway experts can provide the details. If Townley road was sold off, it explains why the playing fields are cut in two.
  22. I believe Townley Rd was part of the school grounds and then sold off to a railway company.
  23. Saw one coming out of the drain grating in Worlingham Rd.
  24. Just watched our new neighbour cut down the two apple trees in his garden. They were covered with apples every year and a constant perching place for lots of small birds. I feel quite sad about it
  25. There's one on the junction of Townley/LL too.
