  1. People don't pay tax because they like to fund state benefits and pensions - they are prepared to do it though because it's the only way to prevent gangs of marauding pensioners attacking the 07.49 to London Bridge and mugging postmen. State benefits and pensions are the modern equivalent of the city wall - they keep the haves (or at least the have-somes)safe and the have nots (or have-littles)at bay by giving them just enough to deny them the motivation to risk life and liberty in taking what they need to survive. Doesn't always work of course. It's not altruism, it's self preservation.
  2. If it was a state school don't you mean ACF?
  3. typical lozzymuck behaviour... dammit, sorry.
  4. When I first read it in the indie I thought he was getting in his excuses early because he'd been found out - none of his excuses stand up. If you think the interviewee was clear when you interviewed him/her and it turns out later not to be the case then you weren't listening properly or you're an idiot. To then 'borrow' other people's interview material and/or lift from a biography is lazy AND dishonest.
  5. It's actually a cunning ruse by a gang of pick-pockets that are working their way along LL as people look skywards.
  6. i think they are like EDF aristocracy - been going so long that although they may be pointless, dull, degraded in intelligence and usefulness and irritating, they are a source of comfort and nostalgia to veteran posters and something for occasional visitors to look at and have a desultory turn at ... actually not so much ariostocracy as the run down swings and slide of a city centre park.

  10. okay - sandpit it is. but don't you think that these long-winded political arguments that are here, on the gossip page and in the drawing room are having their cake and discussing it too?
  11. Quids is right. There has been a deterioration in the absurd, inconsequential, nonsensical, enlightening and irrelevant here and a preponderance of politically driven debate. The lounge has been a dumping ground for too long. Whenever admin don't know what to do with a thread that is ill-suited to its surroundings it gets 'lounged' and we have had enough! It's about time the earnestness with which some of the socio-political guff posted in this section got its come uppance and got 'drawing roomed'. Any debate in this section should only be tolerated if it either raises a smile/laugh or contains amusing/slightly-rude imagery. Any attempts at political point scoring or arbitrary insults (designed to promote or attack a political viewpoint) should be D.R'd. and those with the lounge's best interests at heart should pile on to the offending thread to make sure it is.
  12. If I accept those figures UDT, you seem to be saying that there need to be lollipop persons on every pedestrian crossing on every street in every town. At present there are many pedestrian crossings used by children on their way to school that do NOT have lollipop personel. The one by Iceland on Lordship Lane, for example, is used by a lot of children and is made more dangerous because of the proximity of a bus stop that means some children are tempted to rush across to catch a bus that is about to pull away. Should this crossing be manned or are children only in danger if the crossing is in sight of their school? Also the argument that it is "only ?x a day" could be used for anything - and often is.
  13. I realise 'mummies' are going to scream at the thought but... If children are old enough and responsible/intelligent enough to negotiate the walk from home to school (barring these crossings) with all its attendant dangers (dirty old men offering 'sweets', cyclists on the pavement, ordinary agressive humans) then is it really beyond them to manage to use a pedestrian crossing without the assistance of an adult? If it is then perhaps they shouldn't be allowed to complete ANY part of the journey alone.

I know ED isn't SW9 but some as SJ says, some people walk out of ED station and along the vale with eyes glued to blackberry/i-phone and seemingly unaware of their immediate surroundings. Maybe a few warning signs on the platforms would help.

  25. Unbelievable! So Uruguay make the World Cup semis and drop 11 places, Ghana make the quarter finals and drop 18 places and Mexico beat USA to win the CONCACAF cup and go up 19 places. Maybe England have been affiliated to CONCACAF and Jack Warner is to head up the FA?
