Lots of threads on this forum about change in one way or another, and it got me thinking about when I most liked East Dulwich. I'm interested to hear what others think. So, FOR ME, the best East Dulwich was 2003 - 2007. A lot of the reason for this is purely because I was at a time in my life when I had money to spend, and no responsibilities. Steak sandwiches and reading the paper in Inside 72 on a week day (when you and about 3 of your mates were all on sickys). The Vale was new and for a brief period provided some cracking Friday/Saturday nights, before the owner basically ruined it by being an arsehole to everyone. Yilmaz kebab. (always superior to stab n crime) ?1 pizzas from the crappy short lived chicken shop on Northcross Road. But most of all, The CPT. the people that came and went behind the bar, the punters, the quiz nights, the after hours parties upstairs. And the bar tabs! Black Cherry opening was cool. Oh, and The Drum! As I say, this was the time when we were in a big circle of friends, all young with a bit of cash to spend, so I have got rose tinted glasses on, but that's my favourite period of ED life.

Former ED police station fetches in excess of 5 million!

It's just what London is becoming unfortunately. I moved from ED to Sydenham in 2006, and LOVE Sydenham, but prices are zooming up there too. We're about to buy an ex council flat in Penge, and I reckon in a year's time that would be beyond us too. It just feels like "real" places are being wiped out. People may shoot me down for saying that, but frankly they're exactly the sort of people that are supporting the wiping out. You couldn't pay me to live in East Dulwich at the moment, and slowly but surely Peckham, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Penge, will all go the same way.

Well yeah, but I just meant Wigan in general. Although Sunderland probably fits in to the same bracket.

Have fond memories of cheering them on against Newcastle in roughly 97/98. I can remember the pub I was in, in Liverpool.

Or take one of bob's recommendations. The Peckham Liberal club has a seperate room out the back with several large tables all well spaced out from each other.

I think the general rule of thumb is to try and forget Wigan.

I think he's a cracking player, and I'm surprised that Mourinho hasn't fancied him, but he's a man who knows his own mind, and I guess Mata must just be a square peg for his round hole plans. Think he'll be a great buy for Man U, but not sure he'll be enough to sort their current issues out.

I do agree with Louisa that areas can become quite generic once they're gentrified. Landlords get greedy and the independent businesses that make people flock to the area get priced out and it just becomes another place like the last one. I believe this process has begun in ED and will continue over the next couple of years.

Yeah, who UncleGlen? -
I think he'll be there for at least 2.5 seasons. I think they'll stick with him for now, but if they're not right up there challenging by Jan 16 he'll go. But what do any of us really know about the crazy world of top flight football.
-
Not good timing for me, as hopefully I'll be moving next month. But if you go to any in future I'd be interested.
-
His family's word actually.
-
Just to clarify, I am not claiming he had a gun in his hand when he was shot, nor am I claiming the police jave handled the whole thing correctly. But equally claims that he was "executed" are a nonsense.
-
Fine, he was an angel. The police shot him because they didn't like the cut off his jib. Whatever.
-
He had a gun, that's dodgy in my book. That's not to say he should have been shot dead, but if he hadn't been dodgy a police firearms team wouldn't have been watching him in the first place. The police messed up and then disgracefully tried ro cover it up and briefed media before the family. But let's not pretend he was sweet and innocent.

StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I love the Castle too - but didn't the pub have a > rep long before the forum? Yep, and well deserved, but I think Jenny has worked hard to change it, and some people (who have never been in there, or not for years) will still type online that it's a rough dump. And I agree that there are pub review sites, but if you're an ED resident you're quite likely to come on this forum. Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a go at the forum, just those that write negative stuff about places that they've not actually tried for themselves.

Oh yeah I know that, in the early days they played probably mostly covers, but they stopped playing live and basically became a studio band trying new things out. That's what I meant by the earlier prog rock comment, I wasn't suggesting they sound like prog rock *shudders*.

Basically Mick & Keef were huge blues fans, as was Brian Jones, and they started playing covers. That's why The Beatles are so important. The Stones are great, but they took a genre and gave it their own twist, whereas The Beatles were doing original stuff. "I feel fine" was the first time feedback had been heard on a record for example.

We'll agree to disagree then. I thought it was a very convincing win for Chelsea, and United looked well off the pace. And I'm not saying that to be anti united. I am no Chelsea fan either, but that is how I saw the match. And as I say, Chelsea were able to storm down the left all day long.

Comments on here can have an effect though. I was at The Castle yesterday, and chatting to the Landlady outside, she was saying that comments on here have contributed to them having a rep as a rough pub where people are likely to get stabbed, which is total bollocks. But people read stuff on here about businesses, and often take it at face value, even if it's a load of shite.
