  1. JohnL...solid internal shutters are a very traditional feature of Victorian and Georgian period properties. They would traditionally fold back into the wall when not in use, disguised to look like wall panelling...

  3. That's the 'plantation style' I was referring to Sue. The origin of plantation shutters that are currently used are from the early colonization of the US. Spanish settlers that founded plantations had brought the knowledge of the convenient and adaptable window treatment with them. They made the plantation stand out by painting them white and creating wide louvers. Usually reserved for sugar or cotton plantations, the shutters eventually became a stylish but practical way to control air flow and sunlight. Today, while still recognized as a symbolic tradition of the South, many people appreciate the creative ingenuity that has remained almost unchanged since the colonies sprung through the Americas. I can see you sitting in your rocking chair on your front verandah, watching the world go by...

  5. Are you referring to the 'plantation style' shutters that are totally out of keeping with the Victorian properties they adorn?...

  12. It would've been the contents of the building that caught fire not the cast iron structure and glass panels. The subsequent high temps created by the fire would've eventually caused the structure to warp/buckle and eventually fail/collapse. Your common side/rear extensions have steel supports that have to be fire protected for this very reason...

No. There are 3m and 6m rules, which I won't go into detail, as your proposed extension obviously falls outside both. You mention fence, are there any brick boundary walls close by?

  20. Thanks for the tip/link Sue. I only wanted a couple of prints (quickly). I paid 79p for a 8 x 6'' print. Standard 6 x 4'' would've cost 39p. I used the SD card, no probs. Will use Boots again for one-offs...

Or maybe there needs to be a change of mindset that somehow you can't lead a fulfilled life unless you own a property. On the continent long term renting isn't seen in such a negative light, and subsequently rents are lower and leases longer...
