  1. I recall the manager of the Costcutters by the Library (Plough end) said a few months back that he had his eye on the premises for an independent offie. Not sure if that's coming to fruition or if it's something else
  2. I passed it earlier and it looked very open... there is surely no question that the block at the beginning of the lane looks much better than it did a couple of months ago
  3. Monica i think this came up before. No one can find the real number for the plough. I know.. . Weird huh
  4. I have only just read all this. . . I never knew alan cared. .
  5. and lyric as the first word before the quotations - so my query was lyric "number one was dull and number two is best"
  6. didn't recognize that one Maximay - but a quick google shows it to be Lene Lovoch - Lucky Number... which makes your judgement sound
  7. I agree 100% with *Bob* and mightyroar's last posts Anything Beatles or Dylan related I find hard to like (guilty confession and I await the rotten tomatoes)
  8. you leave Dolly Parton alone!!! Oh, you mean the other - the one who also sang "It's not right, in fact it's bleedin awful" or some such
  9. no problem at the time of the single I believe he had a stint in Coronation Street as well And may I also thank you for now putting that song in my head!
  10. Gordon is a Moron - by Jilted John Who now "does" John Shuttleworth
  11. Shu.Kurimu.Sensei SOme pics here: http://thealiens.musicblog.co.uk/gallery_live_glastonbury2007.html And some video footage of them playing the Guardian Lounge at Glasto as well... Aliens @ Glasto
  12. I hate that point when you fall in love with a song, know you are overplaying it, tell yourself to stop - but you never do... Many of my favourites have been pinned in the Music Room. but ones that have stood the test of time for me are If You Go Away - Scott Walker Wild Is The Wind - choose from Simone/Mathis/Bowie/Cat Power versions to taste Berties Brochures - Fatima Mansions (no you won't have heard it but if I pull my finger out and get the Christmas CD for everyone sorted it'll be on there)
  13. Good point DC - only problem is I can't nail a favourite of all time - there are too many songs and they go in and out of favour. And most of my favourites wouldn't be known to many people.. not because I'm elitist but familiar songs are, to me, over-familiar and even the very very best of them become annoying when they are over familiar Hallelujah is an example. Probably is one of my favourites but between Laughing Len, Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright and John Cale I tend to skip it when it comes on now... Once in a while I haven't heard it for ages and I'm reminded of how much I love it Keef usually includes it when he plays with Dems (that's this Friday, folk, at the Plough!) and I always look forward to that - great version
  14. whooah David - "These Words" is a great track as well! I'm not buying either of their albums but credit where it's due...
  15. As Mark Thomas has said in the past, "a hero is not a soldier who runs across foreign sands shooting strangers dead, or single-handedly sails around the world. A hero, is the person who gets up off the floor at 3am and says 'ok, I'LL ask next door for some rizzlas'" But I have been inspired at many times in life by different people. I am jealous of people who can name members of their family tho'.. I sort of had to fight/leave mine to do anything. Not that they aren't great, just there wasn't a lot of agreement on anything when I was growing up People who inspired me TEND to share a lack of formal education but with endless enthusiasm for learning - be it from books, life, experience. They also tend to be experimental and creative thinkers (much as I love football you can see why, skills aside I wouldn't pick one as an inspiration).... so George Orwell, Bowie, Bill Hicks and many others all inspired at various points. I heard on the radio this morning a debate about wether black kids need more/better black role models... I think any intelligent kid, of any race/class/money chooses his/her role models more carefully than people imagine. They don't choose John Terry/Cheryl Tweedy as a role model because these people are omni-present.. they choose them because those values (vapidness, fame for it's own sake, arrogance) are already instilled/innate... Somewhere else, at the same time, a similar kid has picked up a book by, say, Naomi Klein....
  16. I know the feeling Surely the best moonlighter tho, is Michael K Williams in Trapped In The Closet
  17. Thanks for keeping us abreast of this PeckhamRose - I'm really pleased it's gone so well for you (esp after the drama we witnessed at the FHT) The location isn't a problem for me but getting the time to go to a play at any point over the last coupl eof weeks (and the next for that matter) is the hard part
  18. that comment COULD be construed as bad taste, no? Anyway I think this thread has long descended into a bit of a personal "thing" re: the owner. We wouldn't like it done to us (well, most of us anyway)
  19. Martin Luther King's last words I believe...
  20. nutty Sorry - not been as abreast of the forum of late Hoopers is an excellent bar, with a good range of ales (unlike most other pubs in the area) Haven't been to the quiz in a while (it's a bit too far for me to make) but recall it being a good larf
  21. To be honest i have re kindled my affection for liquorish in recent weeks. . . Ate there at the weekend also and standards are definitely up again
  22. yep - I always tip at least 10% - usually rounded up to next ?1 Unlike bars and what not there is a pretty good chance that the money goes directly to the poor schmoe who is out there in the weather on the scooter If I can afford ?20 or so for some curry then I can afford the 10% (and it's not like, say the post office where salary, benefits etc are part of the deal.. in some cases I wouldn't be surprised if these people don't get paid at all) On a related note, with an odd rare exception, the delivery people in the area are pretty friendly I find...
  23. well that's always the question isn't it? We try and stick to 1 at a time but sometimes it runs to 2 or 3 depending on the day... But the only reason for holding back at all is to have more episodes to look forward to. And with Series 5 being the last one, not many eps left to go after this... :(
  24. spooky - I just ordered mine on ebay - came to ?30 odd quid. Can. Not. Wait
