Thread consisting entirely of song lyrics
SeanMacGabhann replied to Peckhamgatecrasher's topic in The Lounge
As the pulled you out of the oxygen tent You asked for the latest party .... Young girl They call the the Diamond Dogs -
Mike I nearly typed a whole bunch of stuff that you would have loved - but let's be fair to the thread title and we'll take our whimsy elsewhere (or at least I would if I had as much time as I used to) One of my favourite threads of the years was the "Enemies of Reason" thread... plenty of heat under that one I also got involved in a political/economic debate with downsouth and Marmora Man (which somebody claims I lost!!) which had plenty of back and forth but also nuff spect

Mr Birdseye Don't tell me you are a) joining in with the mob b) on the same bus as me in real life as well? (scowls..)
-
*Bob* You just made me laugh out loud and spill my water on my keyboard - stop it!
-
err... good spot Brendan! And as I've said before, it's not litter, it's "kindly leaving something worthwhile to read for the next person" But thanks Michael - I know have inspiration for my new forum ID "MrFlogandburnanybodywhodrivestoasupermarkettodotheirshoppingratherthanfloggingupanddownLorshipLanewithashoppingtrolly" Oh Mr Administrator???!!! PS I flog up and down Lordship Lane without a shopping trolley. And I live further away. And up the hill (he says smugly)

Gee, you leave ONE Guardian on ONE seat on the ONE day young Mr Dale spots me and suddenly I'm Mr Litter Lout ;-)

As I only joined in Feb, I'm going to say my Forum standout moment was going to my first forum drinks at the CPT People have already mentioned many of the highlights - I'll add the romance that started between a Cat and an Onion, due to the forum The best service locally thread was enjoyable, and when Nisha at Val's grocers by the library read the printout I gave her she was sooooooo happy, it was a moment

Emily For my earlier mistake alone, I must apologise. I was wrong to lay the needle-exchange-blame at your feet but at least Mozza stepped forward and corrected me. My mistake is entirely understandable however as I genuinely have stopped reading most of his posts... As for the rest... hmmmm. Generalising an argument along gender lines? And you a journalist? And owning more than one branch doesn't a chain make. If I jump on a train and go to Devon, Yorkshire or Scotland only to find a G&B on every hight street then that's a chain. It's not the size of the business that bothers me it's the homogeneity. It's enough to make me scarper to somewhere remote like Peru and no mistake. Except there's a bleedin Starbucks there and all... Look - all some people are saying re: Neros and chains is "isn't it a tiny bit nice to live somewhere that's a tiny bit different and not like all them towns what got in the news* today about being Britain's most popular places to live?" * link to that story

hmph... maybe - but I'm not even speaking to you! ;-) I expected better from Emily

Emily It's the 2nd time you've brought up the needle exchange - that has nothing at all to do with this issue I've made my peace with Nero more or less (the establishment - not the Forumite of same name) but there are sound reasons to be wary of it's arrival As it happens I'm not OVERLY upset about it's retrospective push to get the license - to have it removed on that technicality would be a hollow victory for me (the 50/50 balance of food outlets on the lane tipped over by a panini?? oh purlease....) If it means the council shows some leeway to independents (as in helping out the situation at G&B) then I'm all for flexibility The reasons for genuinely objecting to it's arrival are the same as those expressed in the chains threads on the forum. In my book the regeneration of Dulwich was done by independent traders (ED, Grace & Favour, William Rose, G&B, etc etc) That regeneration is the reason we like living here If LL just becomes another mall-on-the-street with the usual names (Next, M&S, Boots, yadda yadda) why live here as opposed to anywhere else. There is no evidence to say it will become this way, but the amount of chains sniffing around suggests a balance will not be found.. they will push everyone else out and we will be living in blandalanda. Some people would be happy about that I'm sure The needle-exchange thread has some important points on both sides but the debate about it should be kept to that thread Lastly - going to a place for free papers as one of it's attractions??? You're paying ?2+ for a warm cup of milk with brown bits - buy your own paper forcryinoutloud!!! Decent journalism costs money

"We used to be quite handy when Charlton used to sponsor the ladies team but since they pulled the plug on the finance it's make mend and do.. "

True kford but how would we arrive at a consensus... I've just read the Sema Thai thread and found both yours and Bellenden Belle's reviews at loggerheads.. Normally I like reading both your posts so who do I believe? You will find a champion for pretty much any establishment on here from more than one person so in theory every place could have a sticker. (by the by I very rarely venture into Mon Petit'Chou but did last Sunday and had a fab bowl of chili... just the job for a wet and grey afternoon - so that would be a new addition to my (tu) list) Maybe anyplace that gets more than x number of votes?

I rather like 'chains' coming to East Dulwich (Lounged)

I'll agree that Chener looks tatty beyond need AND the perpetually leaking roof didn't help - but beyond that surface I think it's pretty good The big table with what I imagine are the recommendations of the shop is usually pretty well thought out and the stock generally is both good and accessible. By accessible I mean I can browse the shelves, not "easy to read" I think the Village bookshop IS fab but is also very very poky and uncomfortable if more than a few people are in there -
I'll get in early then and ask the obvious - "where are people watching them"?
-
SteveT You've put into words there exactly how I feel about this place - with the added bonus of reading something from ANCIENT HISTORY (relatively speaking anyway.... has it only been just over a year?)
-
I see everyone is waking up from the early morning activities..

I want to slag Arsenal off (and deservedly so) but that will sound like I'm not giving Boro credit, and they deserve every plaudit going. They played really well and could have had more than 2.

Not around top end of Friern Rd (to my knowledge anyway) Then again every single time we put out a recycling box it disappears so I'm hacked off in a different way

favourite songs of all time (or has this been done already?)
SeanMacGabhann replied to LizzygotDizzy's topic in The Lounge
Now we're talking Of course we all know Starman's melody stole from Judy But here's a more recent version: Bowie - 2000 -
Shu.Kurimu.Sensei Did I miss something? what exactly was the pathetic jibe? If you mean the depression comment I suspect that was pointed inward and not outward I tend to disagree with DulwichMum's (and others') support of chains but have no desire to see a "ghost town vibe anywhere. Having seen it here I have to disagree that the area was better. Having lived in other parts of the world with "ghost town" atmospheres they were no better.. Doesn't mean I like everything that has happened around here mind you... the lairier end of weekend-evenings I could live without but it remains home. And a friendly one at that

Depends on the gig - any kind of band that relies on energy - be it NiN or the Chemical Brothers, has to be standing... it just does. No ifs no buts. No "but I'm xx years of age/done my time/had a hip replacement" excuses. Well, maybe the last one. But if Iggy Pop at 60-odd is prepared to jump around like a lunatic and hurl himself into the crowd then we have no excuse More pensive artists (your Lambchop for example) are a different matter and I'm happy to have a seat. I might even mutter an "oh, very good" to some of the uptempoish numbers ;-)

Who cycles to work from East Dulwich?
SeanMacGabhann replied to willma's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Mlteenie Public transport does require a bit of smarts - bit like planning any journey really, even by car If you left ED at 7:50 you would/should be in Farringdon by 8:30 (it's a journey I have done hundreds of times) I empathise with the whole train/tube frustration - it's why I gave up on them and face my bete-noire - the bus Basically catch a 63 - takes you all the way to Farringdon in 30-40 mins. Admittedly at times after 8am it can get congested around Blackfriars but you're nearly there so you can hop off and walk the last few hundred yards... Bus journeys aren't always stress free but if you can do a journey n one, and don't need to catch TWO, then it's usually best option And ?6.60 ???? Even without an Oyester why not just pay the ?2 each way... job done -
watching the game and the reactions Keef it seems clear that Rafa is prioritising Tuesday's game.... which makes it easy to have a pop at him about not wanting the league enough 20 mins left is plenty time for a big team to turn around 2 goals IMO - he will definitely not be Mr Popular on 5Live
-
Good for you - let us know how it goes. I would say 9 times out of 10 they do agree to take me/us (even if some tutting is involved) but that one time they don't is when you really need the cab... And Bishopsgate to ED is quite a cushy ride for a fair whack as well for them - dunno what their problem is. They are probably vampires and can't cross water after dark or summat
