I didn't think it was a dig - I thought it was a come-on ;-)

I find the whole passport/100ml fluids/belt and shoes shenanigans endlessly futile and frustrating. Even if it helped prevent a terrorist attempt (which it doesn't IMO - a terrorist will pick up on the rules and try and circumvent whatever they are - that's part of what makes them terrorists) it could at least be applied consistently. But depending on where you fly to/from/which airport/time of day it's all a sham Sometimes, I have been through the full monty whilst on the exact same trip within weeks I haven't even had my passport checked It's either THAT scary and important or it isn't....

Funnily enough Annasfield I was thinking the same thing (about it being mostly male posters in here) So I have held back So far it has been a fairly sensible debate (compared to any other forum where the topic comes up) As with Mockney and Fear, I've not been in the situation but have had plenty of dicussions around it. I'm glad it exists (see anywhere where it doesn't exist to see what the grizzly alternative is ) but I can't see how there isn't a moral dimension to it. Otherwise, like many mammals, we could wait until giving birth, have a look and decide whether we were going to keep it or do away with it then.

I had a look at the food menu - saw cottage pie for eightish and a bacon buttie for five and a half ish. Nowhere close to cheap but I have see them more expensive as well (haven't tried them mind you so won't comment on value....)

i don't think that's the reason Spadetownboy - many of us were quite happy to frequent the Vale before events overtook us - it has nothing to do with any other bars or supposed middle-class prejudice. Enough comments have been written on here before as to it's shortcomings to be more than prejudice To be absolutely fair - I can also see why some people don't have any problem. And that's not meant to be sarcastic. It's a good space, good condition beers and the sport is done well. If I never encountered any problems I would like it too.

The Peckham Rye Park and Grill

To also directly answer the question: I would hazard a guess that it takes a gay person to walk into (say) what was The Goose & Granite or the old Forresters to find out that sexuality has everything to do with it Sadly etc etc -
Serenity I applaud your sentiments but in this case (ie the Vale) I will make an exception and say that it is precisely BECAUSE he chooses to ignore constructive criticism AND treats people who have spent THOUSANDS of pounds with nothing but disrespect despite them being well behaved (compared to some I have seen in there) that I say this place deserves every kicking it gets As for the community on here, Green & Blue, EDT, East Dulwich Deli, The CPT and others have all been part of a dialogue which has enhanced both the service of these places and their reputations - the Vale could either: join in on here and discuss some of the strange policies provide a more welcoming atmosphere retain staff who are less than comfortable with some of it's attitudes to [sniiiiip - legal ed.]

being neither "yummy" or "mummy", I still had occasion to pop in to Le Chandelier for a spot of morning sustenance today (with Lady MacG) 2 obscure teas (both well lush) and several pastries/cakes later we still hadn't clocked up enough to warrant a card transaction (ie < a tenner) I ordered a couple of extra croissants to take away and walked away to the bus stop thinking how lovely the whole experience was Thing is I had forgotten the extra pastries and only found out when one of the staff came running up to the bus stop to hand it over So: Great service, great teas, great chairs and less than sky-high prices. What's people's beef with the prices? I couldn't afford to go there more than once a week but come on - compared to what people DO spend their money on* .. a place that gives a large portion of space to speciality teas, coffees, champagne beer, wines, champagne, other beer, other food.. We should be overjoyed to have something like this nearby - we can still go to a caff if we want cheap n cheerful no? * Those other things (as far as I can tell) off the top of my head close to a fiver for a dvd rental close to 3 quid for a ringtone close to a quid for a variety of phone-on "reality" shows - even if they weren't on the fiddle

all true LTP - but the short answer is that the Rye is both a very good pub AND gay friendly* *another translation: groups of pissed up, stripey-shirt-wearing geezers on a Naaaght-aaahht tend not to frequent it -
Keef I liked Mrs Keef before the wedding but after the 2 choices you highlighted above I like her even more. "America" gets me everytime And really really gutted I missed the day. But I think I've said this already..... Ireland was lovely tho!

Andrex bog roll: Is it still as good as it use to be?

And to think Kate used to hang around these parts... And if by Tuesdays you mean "days with which I get to spend hard earned money on alcohol" I think you will ind they come around all too often (BTW - I Am posting too much even by my standards today - but I'm listening to the radio at home and I can't stop listening!)

oops downsouth - my fault. I meant to post the link as well http://www.jancisrobinson.com/articles/winenews051022 It's just opinion of course. But supermarkets deal with a small range of decent wine because they have competition from the small guys. Not because of you. Once the little guys are gone (and it's not just the chains that want them gone - the landlords don't love 'em either) then they no longer have to deal with the small interesting, non sugar-coated vineyards. You might not mind where your pound goes but these guys do....

David O Leary " my wee boys can only be expected to do so much.." Arsene Wenger "Yes.. the teeem is young but I feel that there is maybe 20-30% improvement to come" The difference ladies and gentlemen

Piers- Tuesday Cheap As Chips night?? What am I going to do- say no??? ;-) But I would ALSO argue that it is Kate's insight which is needed more often

downsouth - even if that were true (and it has been a while since I have checked again) not the following article: --------------------------------- The British not only buy by far the majority of their wine, almost two-thirds, from supermarkets, and the great majority of that from just four - Tesco, Sainsbury?s, Morrisons/Safeway and Asda (owned by Wal-Mart) - they have also, unlike their counterparts elsewhere, been led to expect their supermarket wines to be interesting and varied. So anyone making decisions about exactly which bottles go on a supermarket shelf has a multi-million pound budget and a queue of would-be suppliers who would succumb to virtually any indignity the buyer cared to name in exchange for a listing, which is why on the face of it the current exodus of wine buyers from UK supermarkets to join the much more crowded and powerless ranks of suppliers is surprising. As Nick Tatham MW, one of the first to make such a move, from Sainsbury?s in 1990 to set up his own wholesaling company with another ex-Sainsbury?s colleague, puts it, ?As a buyer you?re courted, you?re everyone?s best friend. But as soon as a buyer leaves a supermarket and joins us on the other side, people go up to them and say ?I can be rude to you now and tell you what I really think about you??. So why in the last few months have very senior buyers quit Tesco, Sainsbury?s and Asda to go and work for suppliers who, until recently, were licking their boots? The answer is a depressing one for British wine enthusiasts. Those who work in the supermarket wine departments need less and less wine expertise. Since about 60 per cent of all the wine sold in multiple retailers is sold when offered on promotion at a ?special? discount, more and more of the buyers? work is made up of entirely routine agreements (?negotiations? would misleadingly imply parity between the parties) with the handful of major suppliers that can afford this roster of discounts. The proportion of bottles on the major retailers shelves that do not come from one of the big companies (which continue to get bigger) has shrunk markedly in the last five years so that active buying, in the sense of selecting a wine on the basis of how it tastes, plays a distinctly minor part in the life of today?s supermarket wine buyers. Some supermarket wines have also joined the legion of commodities bought, without any sampling, via online auctions. ?There?s been a real change in wine retailing in the last few years,? according to Laura Jewell, another Master of Wine who has just left Sainsbury?s for one of her old suppliers. ?There?s lots more emphasis now on profits, margins and volumes, and a certain homogenisation of the product rather than selling all the nice little things. For the grocers the wine department has become a department like any other. We?re no longer in the wine trade proper.? ------------------ Me again. And even if they have pulled up their socks considerably then it still leaves me wondering why I go to a supermarket instead of a spec-ia-list. Convenience....?? I know I'm always banging on about supermarkets. And I used to love the "weekly shop". But doesn't anyone else feel like a Stepford resident when walking the huge aisles? We love ED for the very reason that despite nearly being run out of town, independents have at last prospered again. To let them fade away because we are all at the supermarket is too depressing to contemplate People in other parts of the country say they have no choice. Which is true. While we have an alternative we should use it IMO
