  1. ok - hands up who believe this to be true? (td)
  2. 2 EDT related notes Free as I am to do what I will this week, I went for lunch at EDT today (bumped into rare-as-hen's-teeth-postings forumite Steph - looking gorge) and had a very pleasant time. Bar staff were in great form and landlord said hello as well - plus both went out of their way when I had the tiniest problem imaginable with the food. Speaking of the menu I understand they might be going Italian soon? Anyway, thanks a million guys Secondly - is anyone going to the comedy this Thursday night?
  3. 2 topics dear to the Forum's heart on the comment pages today Forget your bias against the columnists, but I'd be interested in any arguments against them (Monbiot particularly) Bleedin Libertarians - George Monbiot You think crime is bad now??? - Polly Toynbee
  4. have to say UC I can't wait for the warehouse to open and to visit your bookshop in particular (to be fair, it's the only place I know the details of at the moment ;-) )
  5. Maurice - the ability to move around and settle in other towns/communities doesn't disappear in static housing markets (certainly if one rents anyway) As someone who has lived in 9 different towns I would also be horrified if I was stuck in my original town But the reason people can't afford to live in their own towns if they WANT to, is not because of people moving from other areas, it's the overblown housing market and property speculation/second homes which is doing the damage, and there is a lot which could be done to dampen that down. But of course we won't because we LOVE these high property prices don't we?
  6. Me likes the Drum! But outside seating doesn't have to be for smokers - BM are entitled to not allow smoking in or outside so I doubt anyone will tell them... and I doubt they will be short of punters (I can walk past there on a freezing wet January morning and people will still sit outside that place)
  7. because that's what the idea of "community" is? As opposed to a random collection of people living in the same geographical spot That said I agree that people assuming they have a "right" is a bit strong - but it's a sign that something isn't quite right if generations of your family have lived somewhere only to find you can't (choosing not too is far better ;-) )
  8. ATM mini slips!!!!!! I don't mind the slips themselves it's the way people have to actually choose between: Cash only Cash with receipt They choose WITH receipt and then just leave it without looking - I'll deal with that after you pal shall I?? And then people wonder why the state becomes more nannyish... freedom means responsibility for your actions people! Phew - glad I got that off my chest
  9. Why do I not do seafood? No allergy, just last remaining hurdle. My diet to the age of 20 or so was....beyond one-dimensional. No meat, no veg, no fruit (pretty much) No even sure why - I just didn't see the point. Now it's the complete opposite but fish remains an anomaly. I have dabbled in the last year and am working towards it (a fellow forumite even managed to get me to try eel at Buddah Jazz... but then it had chili all over it so that was easy)
  10. I was told a while back that it is the same sugar but I'm not 100% sure - it just has a different look to it. Although it probably is... Agreed UC on that little strip - although hasn't Parkhill reserved thise stores for some chains (hazy memory on that score but I think that's right)
  11. You beat me to the punchline UC.. it's one of those ideas that, post implementation, everyone wonders why it didn't happen sooner (one of the reasons I like Ken, for all his faults, is that he leads rather than consults/procrastinates)
  12. Watching the football in teh back room of the Wishing Well is almost womb-like. You can forget there is a real world out there this can be both a good thing and a bad thing ;-)
  13. who knows Alan, all that walking may be the (weak excuse) for me leaving my paper on the seat in the bus ;-) Seriously tho' since I started it has contributed to my sense of wellbeing far more than any other gym/healthdrink/anything else that costs money and I can't recommend it enough
  14. Does anyone bother to think why Sea Cow might be more expensive than your average chippie or do people really just look at the price of everything and judge accordingly?? You still might favour the food in other chippies and the Sea Cow isn't perfect but having bigger premises, an alcohol license, the range of fish, a commitment to fish stocks etc surely counts for something? WHo knows, maybe the staff get paid a little bit more as well... (Not that I ever go in there as I don't do seafood - have tried the chips and loved them mind)
  15. I heard Monica, Marilyn and Richard on BBC London Live this morning - well done guys! It must be really hard to try and change some people's attitude (what about that guy interviewed who said life in London was stressful enough without having bags and this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back!??) It could be argued (and people have) that there are bigger issues in the world, even in the recycling world*, but you have to take one step at a time and this is a great move which will get people thinking about their habits *(I wonder if at the miracle of water into wine, people at the wedding said to Jesus, "yeah that's all very well Anglo-Saxon dude but it doesn't solve world hunger does it?")
  16. oh purlease people! A petty attack on Costcutter has brought about a return to hanging?? They were happy days to be alive weren't they - witches burned, children up chimneys, women without vote and slaves... well enslaved And I know the Bulger murderers were seen but I fail to see what it has to do with Scousers - the exact same scenario could be played out anywhere. When would anyone of us intervene in reality, not in theory
  17. tell me you are being cheeky UC! And even then..... As if a scene like that couldn't happen anywhere else
  18. really LadyG? That was the problem I had with the Ukrainian Tractors follow up as well Shame - but thanks for the heads up
  19. one can only BEGIN to wonder how those holes came about CWALD ;-)
  20. Sometimes when I read erudite reason I get all emotional... Nice one MP
  21. The zombie limit - easily get-aroundable if you are with friends surely?
  22. Par boil potatoes Then peel the, after cooling down Stir fry with garlic, paprika, chilis, pepper, salt and green beans delish....
  23. Yep MW74 - they are living completely normal lives and haven't been incarcerated, lost their childhood or any chance of a normal life at all. No punishment at all - oh wait... Obviously nightmareish what happened and in no way condoning it but kids are horrendously cruel - I can think of at least 3 occassions before I was 13 where something genuinely bad could have happened but for whatever reason didn't - every person involved has grown up to be a normal person leading a normal life. I'm not saying what happened with these 2 was tomfoolery gone bad... but to say they weren't punished??? hmmmm As for where to stop worrying??? Start thinking more and using evidence to reassure you. Before this forum you were less worried but the same level of activity was going on. Where is worrying going to get you? There does seem to be a particular gang at large at the moment but that is what happens from time to time. Worried? no. Worried about partner? No. Is she worried? No.... "the easiest way to keep people in line, is to scare the shit out of them" Cathal Coughlan 1991
  24. Brendan slipped in : And is therefore officially given a free pass to heaven At the moment I am reading "Small Island" by Andrea Levy which is excellent but I'm not sure if it's breaking my heart or warming it Review Me Do
  25. *Bob* All true of course - and I have several mainstays that were bought years ago and cost plenty - all still going strong Nor would I buy cheap cookware from Woolies etc - but this stuff looks to be industrial grade and I have been mightily impressed. Time will tell of course
