  1. Residents of East Dulwich complaining about estate agent boards - conscientious pillars of the community Residents of Peckham complaining about buildings in a state of disrepair - fascists hell-bent on ethnic cleansing
  2. Of course it's toxic... but there are varying degrees of toxicity and humans are tolerant to typical exposure. If a puddle of the stuff collects, and your dog/cat drinks it, then yes they might get rather ill.
  3. Glyphosate really isn't all that toxic.
  4. Your mates got you a hooker? On someone else's stag weekend? That's... different.
  5. Used to be good, a couple of years ago. Not been since it changed owners though.
  6. Another recommendation for Miss Tapas here. Delicious food, nice atmopshere. Prices were pretty reasonable too!

For the next 30+ years.

  9. Southwark and Network Rails's regeneration plans - which would result in the displacement of SIXTY businesses - would be a more worthy target for all this outrage.
  10. This all sounds a bit sanctimonious to me. I'm not really a particular fan of those buildings, but I think it's OK to give them a lick of paint. We're not talking about radical redevelopment. Gap are not going to be moving in as a result.
  11. In which case I will keep an eye out for your next words of praise and enthusiasm.
  12. Fox... I think most reasonably intelligent people understand the downsides of urban gentrification as well as the positives. People might have been more sympathetic towards you and Louisa if you'd chosen your targets more sparingly... I suspect that there are valid concerns there, underneath the relentless complaining.
  13. The agents donate money to the school... I assumed the houses belong to parents of pupils. But why anyone would want to go to a school fete - unless your child goes to the school - is beyond me..
  14. edcam, I totally agree that they serve no useful purpose in this day and age. Banning them is a bit strong, but I think vendors should have the option, and agents should be obliged to remove them after completion. I've always had to take them down myself... bit of a pain but not the end of the world. And the wood sometimes comes in handy for little DIY projects!
  15. It's a nice idea... the cynic in me thinks that it's all a bit of a pipe dream, but would love to be proved wrong.
  16. I was being facetious... I have no interest in Olly Murs, or Radio 1. Sorry, my sarcastic humour doesn't always come across in written form...
  17. Yes, all sounds very nice, but what about that new Olly Murs single? Eh?
  18. Henry - actually I wouldn't mind one outside my house... might actually convince me to get a bike! The house price and noise arguments, I agree, are far fetched.
  19. If Alan Sugar is the best Labour can do, they're in trouble...
  20. Burbage Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What about six? I'm guessing of course... but yes it sounds feasible that out of the six cyclists who use the locker, one of them might decide to ditch the car. Which is good, of course. I'm just saying that it doesn't automatically equate to "a gain in parking provision".

  22. I think you're imagining things.

TBH most of the squatters and "anarchists" from the 80s/90s have probably become dull, boring conformists themselves. But yeah a lot of the people who were into Brixton because of it's "edginess" have probably paved the way for its gentrification in some way. > ED had a different gentrification, it was never really cool. ED never had nightlife, it was never really a magnet for cool 20-somethings... it was just a reasonably pleasant, affordable neighbourhood in zone 2, and it sprang from there.
  24. Hope you're OK Sicilia. Throwing the phone over the fence was an interesting tactic... could have turned at badly for you. But personally I'd rather take a punch and not give them the satisfaction of stealing from me, so I personally applaud you (even if I wouldn't recommend your strategy to others!)
  25. I think the gentrification argument has probably been had in all corners of London.. from Notting Hill to Islington to Hackney to Clapham. But I think to some extent Brixton is seen as a special case, in that it's sometimes regarded as the de-facto home of black London (even black Britain).
