  1. You can never be sure of anything with houses of this age. Homebuyers reports don't even scratch the surface (both metaphorically and literally). But high damp readings are very very common and wouldn't put me off (unless there is evidence of rot to structural timbers). I think normal procedure would be to get a quote covering all remedial works, then ask for the price to be reduced accordingly.
  2. 100
  3. Would suggest dipping in breadcrumbs after the egg (preferably panko)
  4. I'm fine with the idea of paying a premium to "shop local", it's just the huge disparity which surprised me. Still, I like the shop and will continue to pop in from time to time, but unfortunately just for the occasional purchase.
  5. So... beer prices. A certain local shop is selling a beer for ?4, that costs ?2.40 in the supermarket. Another beer on the shelves is ?3.15, and ?1.75 in the supermarket. Now I don't expect small local shops to match Saintsbury's/Morrissons/Waitrose on price, but isn't this way above the premium you'd expect to pay?
  6. OK I didn't see that post. I see what you mean now.

  8. StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > if people are moving AND looking to see their > property rise in price Who are these people exactly and how did they become part of the discussion? I really think most people just think "where do I want to live" and "what can I afford".
  9. What are you talking about RPC? London is full of young poeple sharing houses/flats.
  10. Does your daughter have a games console? She might like a Nintendo Wee.
  11. StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > the profit motive, in this market, is eating itself? Yes the profit motive is a problem - but more in the context of property investment, rather than young people getting the first foot on the ladder and trying to find a reasonable area to live in..
  12. That's a relief, sjw! I despair when I see spoiled children carrying expensive phones.
  13. Please tell me you didn't buy a ?600 phone for a child..

The only likely environment for a confrontation would be shallow African rivers. So we're probably talking about a bull shark. The bull shark is a fierce creature, can grow over 3m long, regularly dines on other sharks, and has been known to attack hippos. The lion's only hope would be to drag the shark onto the shore, which is a long shot. I'm going for the shark.
  15. Thought is was bingo wing day. Sounded like something salsaboy might get excited about.
  16. StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > if you move to a new area and you want prices to rise - that's the problem > if you want to move to an area because it's nice enough and you can afford it - no problem there I'm seeing an obvious third option - move to an area which is a bit down-at-heel but with signs it is on the up, and you believe will turn out to be a nice place to live. Surely that's what lots of us have done or are doing? Any rise in price which may have occurred is cancelled out (and then some) when you move house anyway.
  17. SJ... are you saying that moving into an up-and-coming area is synonymous with a desire to cash in? Sounds like it. Seems a bit harsh.
  18. Yeah I think goldbags have it. Kanye and The Killers are but blips on the musical landscape.

StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > People don't just move to an area they can afford > - they move and actively want prices to continue > to go up after they move thus preventing others > from doing what they did It does sound distasteful when you put it like that, but realistically it's just about finding the best (in the long run) area you can afford for your budget. I don't think anyone can be blamed for that.

Architects drive Saabs? Can you even buy Saabs any more?
  23. If there's an area close-ish to ED which has potential to boom, then Penge is it. Much of East London is super-grim, and though the Hams, Forest Gate, etc look cheap, it's for a reason. They might get better, but I wouldn't personally want to take such a big risk. Stratford and Wanstead are both fairly popular now so you might struggle with your budget. And for me... Stratford feels a bit soulless, and Wanstead feels too suburban/Essex.
  24. And if you get bored of your house, you can just buy another one and have it put up in the same place. Plenty of advantages.
