  1. Yeah, I'd agree with your deduction re the attempted gigs at the Vale. Ivy House location - it would put off almost all the people I know who don't live locally, but as I say, glad it's working out for you. Beer prices - reminds me of the draft house argument, people say it's too expensive but there ARE some reasonably prices beers if you look properly. Are the prices up on a blackboard?
  2. I'd also expect somewhere like that to open regular hours, and especially at breakfast. People made similar remarks about Jacks, and in response the co-owner threw a tantrum!
  3. Just looked at the website... ?3.90 for Becks vier, a couple of bitters at around ?3.50, and a load of microbrew stuff at closer to the ?5 mark. i.e. London prices.
  4. Don't think it markets itself as a craft beer bar especially, just somewhere which has a decent selection. I'm not really concerned with "the curve", just decent beers... even if brands like Kernel, Westmalle, Sierra Nevada, Camden, etc are relatively commonplace these days, they taste good, and that's good enough for me.

If he wanted to help people, he'd put some free advice out there for cooking/shopping on a budget. Not bring out a bloody book. It's a really cynical move IMO. Besides, he's a very rich man who obviously knows nothing about feeding a family on a tight budget, so the whole thing is pretty much irrelevant.

  7. Catford... it's a little ropey, but the KFC loving cat puts a smile on my face every time I drive through.
  8. Sue - great that things are going well for Ivy House and the Goose, I'm sure if established acts have loyal followings people will make the effort. But I stick with my opinion that it's an awkward location for a venue... especially for people like me playing in tin-pot bands who have to beg their mates to come along!
  9. The problem is that pub punters don't want to hear bands playing originals - especially if it's anything vaguely edgy/heavy/different. It would be a guaranteed way to empty the place. If a pub does get a band in, it will probably be covers, safe generic bluesy type stuff, or maybe acoustic. Perhaps we'll see some live music start up in Peckham, where there seems to be a new, younger demographic. ED is firmly a family area now, very few 16-25 year olds around. Ivy House is a nice place (although not been there since the re-opening) but the obscure location means it is destined to be more of a local than a destination.
  10. I quite like the shed. Kinda small though...

  12. Apparently a bakery/cafe will be moving in, so maybe not the end of the (Barry Rd) world http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?30,1176459,1178860#msg-1178860
  13. The thing I don't get is cyclists sharing lanes with buses. Surely you're constantly having to cycle round them when they stop, or being put in danger when they pull out (often without indicating adequately). Seems completely incompatible to me. Dedicated lanes separated by raised ridges would be a game changer. Obviously it wouldn't be straightforward though... old city with narrow streets, etc...
  14. Looks more like a rat to me (even given Foxy's pic). Mice are usually pretty small. In some ways maybe better to have rats... easier to catch and to keep out.
  15. Oh, we're talking about the Draft House again, are we? At the end of the day the beer selection is good and the food offering is decent (maybe a little inconsistent, but easily the best burger I've eaten in ED was at the DH). The interior isn't the best but I really think it deserves to survive at the very least...

  19. I dunno... it's London. I'm happy to travel to Brixton/Camden/Shoreditch/etc to see bands. ED is a quieter neighbourhood. It is what it is.
  20. Of course SJ, very wise to leave a sensible margin for rate rises. I'm personally confident that the BoE know pretty much what they're doing and will steer us clear of MrBen's scenario, but it's just banter... only a fool would take any "predictions" they read here seriously...
  21. Sorry to hear about that GOM, but we have free health care in the UK... there are no medical bills. On your second point, there are some insane cyclists in the city (both commuters and couriers) who bomb through red lights and must spend half of each journey swearing at people! But on the other hand, there are a lot of gormless, half-asleep pedestrians who don't look where they're going when crossing the road...
  22. Oh yeah, you're right. I've not darkened that particular doorstep in a few years!
  23. .
  24. I wonder why the interior can't be made level? The neighbouring shops don't have that strange two-level setup, so what's stopping the occupant/landlord just knocking whatever it is through?
  25. It is pretty depressing... but not really surprising given lack of viable options locally.
