  2. jeez... six pints of anything vaguely alcoholic, that's the rest of my day, and the day after totally gone. Possibly some of the day after that too.
  3. Cherry Tree?
  4. Kinder chocolate in Dulwich Village. Proof that the Great Recession can be felt amongst all walks of life.

  6. I like Crystal Palace, and would quite happily live there. But a decent size house near the "triangle"... still not going to be cheap.
  7. Already been done. Apparently it's going to specialise in selling booze to local gangs, and general propogation of streeet crime.
  8. Apparently (if you believe it) they wanted to go for a title fight on his debut, but they couldn't get it sanctioned.
  9. The drawing room is a bit too highbrow for me... I'm off back to the lounge...
  10. New builds by their very nature sink in value as soon as you've moved in.
  11. Think that was a bit harsh KK... just cos someone doesn't feel that comfortable directly asking people, doesn't mean they think they're queen of anything...
  12. Not really surprising. After tax, very very few poeple will get a bonus big enough to buy a decent house in London outright. They'll still need a mortgage. But I can imagine quite a few could buy a tidy holiday home in Somerset in cash.
  13. Bonfire - don't be put off by the remote chance of encountering a nutter... if you're pregnant and need a seat, speak up!

  15. That's a half-house. Which tbh I think of more as side-by-side flats than proper houses.
  16. You'd have to assume they're not stupid enough to drive round in their own car, breaking into houses in broad daylight.

  18. I'm broadly sympathetic to what you're saying SJ, but it boils down to a much more fundamental question of whether housing (specifically rental in this case) should be subject to market forces. And if it shouldn't, how could it be implemented? Should all property rental be a government function? Appealling to people's better nature to charge a fair price... you know as well as I do that it's a non-starter.
  19. StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > BUt to keep upping it by the > value of the house? How is a tenant meant to keep > up with that? Surely rent is driven by supply/demand, not by landlords deciding they need a certain percentage of the property value every month?
  20. As SJ says, landlords can start raking it in if they pay off their loans, or if the property market rockets. Often they've done so with a relatively small initial outlay, compared to if they wanted a similar amount of ?? exposure in the stock market for instance. But what can you do? Most landlords do not fall into that category (no evidence, just what I think). Many are renting out their place for lifestyle reasons, or for a small nest-egg (which they will at some point pay capital gains tax on). It's not all about landlords taking 100% profit and laughing all the way to the bank.
  21. Or smaller house in Sydenham (or wherever), and keep the rest of the cash. Maybe a good option to stretching yourself to the max and spending all your money on your house. Save 300-400K and retire earlier.

Limehouse much more popular amongst renters... young people with grad jobs in Canary Wharf or City. Easier access to central London, trendy East End, etc. ED is more popular with slightly older people who possibly have families and are ready to settle down and buy a place. Rent is driven by market forces more than purchase price.
  23. 800K seems to be the norm for run-of-the-mill 3 bed terraces now, so I guess 700K for a fixer-upper would be about right. Unfortunately.
  24. As others say, plenty of people do things to raise money which aren't necessarily "official" events. And GOSH have lots of contributors. Saying that... 10 mile walk... bit of a poor effort, isn't it? Just taking a couple of hours out of your weekend to walk to the city and back!
  25. One of them looks like the one without a beard from sly & reggie, with a little Silvio Berlusconi thrown in. The other looks like Wayne Rooney's dad. With a little Silvio Berlusconi thrown in.
