  1. There is some competition on mainline services... but I'd argue that even that isn't in the public interest. Especially when people are being slapped with huge fines because their ticket is only valid for a certain operator.
  2. I dunno... maybe the key round here is to go for a more modern/fashionable feel. Seems to be working for the Great Exhibition.
  3. If you want somewhere fairly quiet, I used to live on the Denmark Hill estate, and it was fine. Denmark Hill station is not too far away, and good sized flats - many with 3 or 4 beds, many with a small balcony. A few have little patio gardens. Not many immediate local facilities though. The Dog Kennel Hill estate can't be beaten for location (shops, station) but it's a bit more noisy. The Nunhead estate, on the corner of Peckham Rye and Nunhead Lane, seems quite nice. The flats are a good size, and of course you're right next to the Rye. Nunhead and Peckham Rye stations are within an easy walk. I like Norman Court up near Dulwich Park and the old Harvester, but transport is not so good unless you like buses.
  4. I don't think there are any plans... I'm sure if permission had been sought, it would be all over the forum! But it does seem like a likely outcome. It really is/was a nice pub... they must have spent quite a bit on the refurb. One of the best beer selections round these parts too, with a few foreign/microbrew bottles. They engaged the local community, helping out with the Ivanhoe Rd street party, etc. They had music and comedy nights. They tried showing different sports. I even seem to remember they did French bistro food at one point (am I imagining that?). But it just didn't work in the end.
  5. Fares are getting silly. I can handle the ?120 a month for a zone 1-2 travelcard, but I'm sure many would struggle. If you earn 20K a year, that's around 10% of your take-home pay! Where's the value-for-money in these huge price hikes? Although we've seen increased frequency and reliability(arguably) in our train services to ED, but we've lost the valuable Victoria "loop", and are still experiencing constant weekend closures.
  6. Best of luck MM, I'm sure you'll be very happy in your new home. You'll be missed here.
  7. When you consider the amount the developer would have paid for the property, and that they will be practically rebuilding it (doubling the volume, completely reconfiguring the interior while preserving the frontage)... they're obviously hoping to sell at the very upper end of the price bracket for flats.
  8. Fair enough DC. I do agree it's rather paradoxical. Anyway, Mick Mac explains it better than me...
  9. SJ has a point... you're not comparing like-with-like when you talk about Hoopers and the Draft House. A backstreet pub with singalongs and real ale is hardly going to attract the same crowd as a high street bar in a buzzy location serving world beers and Korean fried chicken. It may be ironic, but it's not crazy.
  10. In an ideal world cyclists would pass a test, and would then carry a licence and receive points for offences such as riding on the pavement or jumping red lights (particularly pedestrian crossings). In the real world... unenforcable and unworkable.
  11. david_carnell's your man for disposing of any dead pigeons, sparrows, etc.
  12. MrBen - that would be "Walthamstow Village", right? I don't think it's been quite so sudden though. The Peckham Experiment and Ganapati were pivotal in the earlier stages of the transformation. Then the Victoria Inn ushered in the next wave a few years later. Anyone who lives round there can see that it's been changing for a long time...
  13. As Louisa says... I don't think any of us expect (or even hope for) fully blown gentrification along Rye Lane. But what we're seeing is interesting things happening, more young people in the area, visitors from other parts of London, and pockets of (relative) wealth.
  14. I didn't really understand all that bump and thump stuff, but well said BB.
  15. I dunno mike... its not an ideal situation, but lack of integration is not specific to this event. Or indeed Peckham. It's a complex subject.
  16. We almost bought house last year but it fell through. Then it appeared on the market this year for 130k more than our agreed price. Crazy. As I recall the "side return" section doesn't immediately overlook other properties, so I can see why the developer thought they could get away with it. But at the same time I think that two storey extensions are quite unusual, so I would expect the council to treat it with caution.

  18. Shame... not many other places with a good selection of beers. But it was a little expensive - even after supposedly lowering their prices.
  19. 550K for a two bed flat in ED... good luck with that.
  20. I think they key thing is with the Peckham Vision lot is that they love where they live, and want to bring out the best in it. Not transform it into something it isn't.
  21. What StraferJack said
  22. Have you tried googling for PDF Editor? But you'd probably just be better off copy/pasting it into Word.
  23. I've never ran in Greenwich Park... but I think that a hilly course could easily make 5 min difference over 10K at this sort of level. The good news is that ED is a great place to train because it's really hilly. I often do a lap round the perimeter of the Rye, and then head up Underhill Rd (which is pretty steep), before heading through the village and up Red Post Hill or Herne Hill. You could also try running up and down One Tree Hill a few times, which can get pretty intense.

    Shutters - why?

Seems like a reasonable way of giving you a bit of privacy in your front room. Certainly more attractive than net curtains or frosted glass.
