  1. What a nice response, TopTree. Usually I'd be in favour of letting the market decide how many estate agents we need along one road, but it is starting to get a bit silly now...
  2. Apparently Haye has signed but Fury hasn't - yet. The fight makes a lot of sense for both fighters though. It's one of the biggest paydays out there for Haye, and it will also be good for his ranking if he wins. Fury, to be fair, is expected to lose - but no shame in losing to one of the best out there at this stage in his career, and as long as he gives a good performance his stock should rise. And surely he'll earn more in this fight that the rest of his career to date.
  3. If the whole point is the bus ride, you must be a glutton for punishment! Glad you're feeling less grumpy now. Are you in that pic? None of those people fit my mental image...
  4. Next time, take the train instead (and check the timetable/status first). Go somewhere which has things you want to do and see (and are within your budget), restaurants you want to eat in, shops that sell water, etc. Enjoy the British summer, and stop being such a miserable mangy old fox.

I dunno... my interpretation is just of an introverted personality who loves the sport but has no interest in the limelight. More of a Paul Scholes or Kimi Raikkonen.
  7. That would scare the crap out of me. We've also had reports on this very forum of these creatures popping up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segestria_florentina
  8. Don't be so mean, TT. The point of the post is to remind us all that walking aimlessly around, without looking into what you might find or how long it might take to get there, is not always fun. Particularly on a very hot day. And also to point out that travelling from South East to West London, by bus, takes a long time. We should be appreciative of Foxy's research.

I see what Otta's saying though, I don't really see Andy Murray as representing Britain as such (that's what the Davis Cup is for). Although of course the support of the country will have helped motivate him, and obviously it's fantastic for Dunblane to be associated with something positive.

I quite like Andy... he's not some slick media personality, he's a normal person. He obviously doesn't like being interviewed, but he shows plenty of emotion on the court - probably too much - and is a hell of a fighter. It's good to see him realise his dreams and reach the peak of his sport (US Open, Wimbledon, Olympic Gold)... not something you see every day.
  11. We all know people who smugly wave the guardian around in an effort to display their left wing credentials. But it kind of invites it by being a) the only mainstream left wing paper and b) the only broadsheet to wear it's political heart on its sleeve so prominently.
  12. Back to domestic level for him, then. It's not too late for him I guess, but his prospects aren't looking great right now...
  13. Either you're winding us up, or you're a racist idiot! Either way, your comments are offensive and most unwelcome.
  14. Anyone on here who's ever made a joke about clich?d middle class pampered baby names (Olivia/Tarquin/etc) should probably count themselves in the 9%...
  15. Anyone with half a brain knows that bringing up kids in your own little bubble is unhealthy both for them and society in general... regardless of political persuasion or what newspaper you may or may not read. But is simply saying "I'm against ALL faith schools" sort of a PC way of wriggling out of the debate?
  16. If Strada have changed their policy, that has to be a good thing... but you can always make sure by giving the waiter a cash tip separate from the main bill. A trip to Strada is never going to be a gourmet experience, but it's far from the worst choice if you just want somewhere for a quick inexpensive meal.
  17. Even the basic mspaint in newer versions of windows can resize and crop images. Also a mention for a useful web based photo editor (with an awful name) : http://www.befunky.com
  18. I do think that learning a martial art is a positive thing (fitness, confidence, self defence, etc) but let's not kid ourselves that it's a sure fire way to kick all sort of butt. Suggesting that someone with a knife is an easy opponent is foolishly naive and could get you into all sorts of trouble. Law of the jungle... in Dulwich Village... whatever. Just buy the kid a ?100 phone.

My absolute favourite timewasters letter is the poem about cavity insulation. I only realised recently that it's by one of the guys who did Look Around You.

As others have said, Henman was consistently in the top 10 for years, made a few GS semis, won a masters event (yes masters tournaments do "matter"!), had possibly the best volley in the game at the time. In what other sport would you call a top 10 player an "average jobbing player at best"? I'm not really into football, but I don't think it would be a stretch to draw an analogy with Gareth Bale or Steven Gerrard. Plus you have to put it in the context of the previous top British players - guys like Andrew Castle and Jeremy Bates who never even broke the top 50...

    You copied-and-pasted that, didn't you?
  23. What TT said. Most normal people are not used to fighting, and generally try to avoid violence or confrontation. It can be really intimidating when an obvious nutter gets aggressive - even if you outnumber them. I'm sure the boys are frustrated and might wonder what would have happened if they'd stood their ground, but honestly the way they responded was quite natural. Better giving up a phone than taking a kicking (or worse).

  25. It's not something I know much about. But I would have thought that if there's only a set number of A3 premises premitted in the area, then landlords of the remaining A1 premises will have to rent them out at a price which is affordable to prospective businesses. So therefore by restricting the number of A3 licences granted, you help ensure that the retail businesses can makes ends meet. If there's no restriction, then the price of all units goes up.
