  1. Surely this is a Louisa wind-up. Following on from the newly found admiration for Pret-a-Manger. I actually think Paul are perfectly fine, but we don't exactly have an obvious gap in the market for somewhere to get a coffee and a croissant.

I don't think I've ever been to a gig which went on until anything like 1am (except for maybe NYE).

I guess there is some truth in the "emporer's new clothes" comment, I think it's just a new/Americanised term for microwbrew, which has been around for quite a while. I think it's quite distinct from the whole real ale thing though - I lost any enthusiasm for that whole scene after getting through several pints of samey, lukewarm, flat and fairly unpleasant bitter at the Earl's Court beer festival thing a few years back. Hoping in vain that I'd come across something at least semi drinkable.
  4. Good luck with that one.
  5. I used to like the "car crash" element of the apprentice, but we've seen it all before, and it's hard to be entertained by yet another intake of deluded fools. The format has become more stale than big brother's dirty undercrackers, the jackpot is demonstrably pointless, and even SrAlan's one-liners are wearing thin. I'm 95% sure the next series will be on C5 or Dave.
  6. Bobster - no, not suggesting anyone should do anything. Just saying that the average person who buys a mac does so because they're happy to pay a premium for something they think looks cool. This is hardly a crime, of course. It's just seems rather daft. Poor old t-e-d, getting rather muddled up again...
  7. I dunno, bob. For ?600 you should be able to buy a decent PC which will last you at least 3 years. I think the real arguments for buying a mac are: - you need software which is only available on a mac (hence the "creative" market) - you think it looks good

Menu in bar was slightly different to the website. Seemed like the regular price to me, no indication it was a temporary offer. Burger cooked medium, juicy and very "meaty" tasting. I think there were different types of cheese on either side of the burger. Really good, will definitely be going more regularly. Will drink halves next time so I can try more beers.

  10. A powerful computer in a fancy looking chassis. Why hasn't anyone thought of that before?

OK, so just came back from the DH. Cheeseburger was ?9.50 INCLUDING chips. And it was definitely the best burger I've had in ED. Maybe not up there with Honest Burger, but pretty damn good nonetheless. The beer is not cheap... but now and again it's OK to spend an extra ?1 on something a bit nicer/different to the usual selection. I still hate the green chairs though!

I can't think of any other pubs with a ?12 burger and chips on the menu. But saying that, value is an equation of more than just the price... maybe one of these days I'll actually try one. But it would have to be pretty damn good to convince me the price was about right. I think there's a fairly large market of beer nerds locally, the pub should be a roaring success. I'm sure it's just a matter of fine tuning.

It's a bit stark inside, isn't it? And all that green furniture makes it feel a bit like a youth hostel. I hear the burgers are good, but I have a bit of a problem with paying over a tenner for a burger and fries.
  14. My point was that dodgy geezers and their mutts are not exclusively a Nunhead problem. Would be a good idea for the OP to check it out a few times before forming an opinion.
  15. I think this is a bit of an unfair attack on Nunhead. It may feel a little down-at-heel compared to some of the neighbouring areas, but the main road has smartened up a bit and feels more buzzy than it did 5-10 years ago. Some of the residential streets have a nice feel to them too. There are plenty of dodgy looking characters with crap dogs in Dulwich Park too.
  16. Japanese Knotweed AND Vanessa Feltz? Sort of a double whammy, isn't it.
  17. I was previously of the opinion that it doesn't really matter if it looks a bit ugly, as long as it helps accessibility. But now I'm starting to change my opinion. But then look at what we're going through with Peckham Rye at the moment. All the effort to undo the damage that's been done over the years and restore some of the original architecture. All this wouldn't have been necessary if the station had been treated sympathetically.
  18. That's quite clearly an American survey. As for the comment that "they are a better long term bet for custom", I can only assume it was some sort of joke, given the percentage of veggies.
  19. Not sure about that specific brand. But I know that you can get Bayer "super strength" glyphosate sachets from Homebase and B&Q, and you obviously mix that as strong as you like.
  20. I saw the bikes yesterday morning. Must have been a terrible shock, but glad to hear nobody was hurt and the damage to the house isn't too severe. My first thought was that it must have been teenage vandalism, but not sure if that really ties in with the 4am timing.
  21. The best solution may be for the buyer to take out indemnity insurance against the lack of planning permission - I think it's a fairly common thing to do. If I was a buyer I'd ask the seller to knock the cost of this off the price.
  22. I believe that around 10% of the population is vegetarian. Easily enough to sustain a number of vegetarian restaurants in London, and ensure that almost every restaurant has at least one vegetarian option. But, I suspect, not enough to warrant a large range of veggie food in most mainstream restaurants.
  23. Cheese seems to be the biggest grey area. Most vegetarians I know will happily eat cheese - even though the majority of it, of course, is not vegetarian. Only the stricter veggies I've met insist on rennet-free.
  24. I'm surprised the veg option is rarely changed, I'd expect a veg option in particular to be seasonal. If I was eating with veggies then yes, they'd probably lose my custom on that occasion. Not sure if that constitues a solid business case for expanding the menu though. Losing a couple of customers now and then may be a preferable option to adding another dish onto the menu.
  25. KK - I guess buy one of the concentrates so you can make a nice strong solution. The stem filling method really will work faster... and also protect your hedge.
