  1. If the trains had been running over the weekend, I guess we wouldn't have had such a large build up of snow on the tracks.
  2. David - it's a good list, but realistically we have two cinemas a short journey away, and two really good tapas restaurants arguably within walking distance (Camberwell and Herne Hill).
  3. As WOD says - if it's metal, just leave it outside your house and it will be gone in a couple of hours.

I can't be bothered to argue. I'm just going to wait until RosieH notices that you've called her "dear", then sit back and watch.

Actually, I think the tesco frozen burgers really were 8 for a quid. I'm sure they're pretty nasty, but they're not going to kill you. Why be so judgemental?

  7. Could be dangerous. Maybe it might be safer on the grass.
  8. There will always be areas which are a bit rougher round the edges, and escape gentrification. It's not really feasible for every area to be brimming with bars, restaurants, nice shops and 700K houses. There are parts of London which are just so shitty, you can't imagine them ever turning round.
  9. Oh yeah, Blackfriars is great for the south bank now they've opened the southern entrance!
  10. South Bank is quite walkable - unless you've got a lot of stuff to carry, or are physically impaired. I walked to work in Moorgate during the last heavy snowfall, it was almost enjoyable. Alternatively, buses often keep running. Even if they're not making it over DKH, you could walk over to Camberwell or Peckham and try picking one up from there.
  11. Vinyl - 45: Heartache Avenue, The Maisonettes. 33: Shakin Stevens, Give Me Your Heart Tonight CD - Guns n Roses, Use Your Illusion 2 Download - possibly... I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams, Weezer
  12. They only tend to grit the bus routes. My advice would be to park your car in relatively safe place (away from corners/bends/hills) and leave it alone until the snow's gone.
  13. peckhamboy's right, rahrahrah was just looking at one of the routes that goes via ED.
  14. Of course the mentally ill need help, I don't even think there's a debate to be had. But the public also need to be protected from dangerous or intimidating behaviour. Calling the police is definitely the thing to do.
  15. [ Quite impressed that a bot is trying to play the song game, even if it hasn't quite got the hang of the rules ]
  16. Ingrid - sorry to hear that, it must be disheartening when you've put in so much work. Perhaps the problem is the choice of film - good (great?) though it is, most people have seen it at least once. Maybe a less well known British/Euro indie film would go down well? I went to a couple of film nights at the EDT put on by a (presumably) different group, and they were sold out. So there is a market for it.
  17. South Norwood and Thornton Heath is essentially a "suburb" of Croydon, the area itself has very little of note. If your main criteria is a cheap house and a decent commute, then it might be OK. But don't expect it to become a new property hotspot. Personally I'd rather have a flat in ED or Crystal Palace than a terrace house in that area.
  18. The case reeko mentions is tragic, and it's certainly not the first time somebody's suffered at the hands of heavy handed police. BUT - if someone is wandering round threatening and abusing people, calling the police is the right thing to do.
  19. By the wat, there are new bike parking facilities in the station itself. Could be a good option for getting to/from the station (although not suitable for Charlie's needs).
  20. Just for the record - me and Huguenot may agree about the bike lockers, but I do not think car owners are bastards!!
  21. Last winter when we had a little bit of snow, the trains were fine. As I recall, the previous winter, when the snow was a little heavier, there were no trains for around three days. Main roads (bus routes) were gritted fairly quickly, but residential roads were not treated.
  22. Alex, I don't buy your argument. Bike lockers are a selfish use of public space? Surely no more so than car parking (be it council-owned garages, car parks, or even on-street). Or all kinds of other facilities. The only issue I have is that there are obviously not enough. Is it a new thing for councils to build stuff that residents find useful?

SJ - totally agree, people should know what they're eating, and I think everyone agrees that this sort of thing shouldn't happen. But my point was that this would have been a non-story if they'd found lamb in the burgers instead.

Given some of the awful practices that go on in the industry, it doesn't really surprise me that a horse or two found their way into the grinder. It certainly doesn't shock me as much as the rotten chickens being bleached, or the rare breed pigs that were butchered alive by thieves. Actually, I'd have no problem eating horse in theory. In fact if Sainos started selling horse burgers, I'd probably buy some just to try.
