  3. Obviously the check shirt look has been popular for a few years, but the number of young men sporting full beards has increased exponentially during 2012. And yes, plenty of them round here!
  4. If you think that only rich people travel by tube, that is the strangest definition of "rich" I've ever heard. It's even more bizarre than proclaiming that the northern line extension is unjust because you don't have a local tube station.

Serious question Probably because a lot of us have academic qualifications or specific industry experience that enable more lucrative or rewarding careers. But I can see how becoming a tube driver could be an attractive option for some people (and it's nowhere near as menial as a lot of people think).
  6. We had teachers at school who were openly atheist, as well as others who were clearly religious. I don't see why it's a problem. A teacher should still be able to present both sides of the argument without hiding their own beliefs.
  7. Stupid argument... splitting hairs. I know both Mandarin and Cantonese speakers who refer to their native language as "Chinese".
  8. Parkdrive, you don't think that reference points are useful when discussing whether something is morally right or wrong?
  9. Canada Water is right next to several major residential areas. I realise this is a hypothetical discussion as such a car park will NEVER be built, but I am pretty sure that if someone was going to drive in from "outside the area", then somewhere a bit more central that was on the Jubilee line would be much more attractive.
  10. BNG, Canada Water is an example of another zone 2 station (better connected) with loads of available free car parking. Still, only a handful of people use it for commuting.
  11. Grosse Point Blank has a good soundtrack.
  12. I recently got a disk stuck in my 15yr old minidisk deck. Couldn't get it out with a screwdriver. Opened it up and tried to dismantle the whole transport assembly. Still no luck. I ended up prising it apart with a claw hammer. It felt pretty good.
  13. You gotta respect someone's right to believe something, even if you don't always respect what they believe.
  14. shaman, I would personally be happy to describe all of those religions as mumbo jumbo nonsense. I believe in freedom of religion, freedom of thought, and freedom of speech. So just as people can stand on the street or knock on my door telling me that christ is our saviour, I can write on a public forum that I believe it's all a load of rubbish. So it is my belief that all this witches and wizards stuff is, in essence, no more or less absurd than the mainstream beliefs. It's surely a result of either indoctrination or delusion, coupled with the inability to distinguish fact from mythology.

    Great Gigs

90s rock band China Drum are reforming and playing at 93 Feet East in Feb. In case any EDF readers are familiar with them...
  16. I am with you to a certain extent Silverfox - Turing wasn't the only victim of grossly unjust laws, and I don't agree that his acheivements should make him a special case.
  17. I assume Alan means it's stuck...

    Scary pubs

The former Irish pub on Walworth Rd which is now an Islamic centre... that place used to look damn scary. Someone else mentioned the Corrib bar. I've actually always wanted to try it. I like the way they have the menu outside, clearly visible from the bus, and everything seems to cost ?2. Just read a couple of reviews mentioning a ?1 cheese sandwich and a ?1.90 pint of Toby bitter.

The Old Dispensary is not even vaguely scary... I even went for a drink with a girl there when it first opened (if those of you who've met me can imagine that).
  23. So what makes an orchestral piece "soundtrack" instead of "score"? The fact that it's an existing composition/recording? Or the fact that it's one of a number of otherwise unrelated pieces which have been plonked together?
  24. Marky Market will get some for you cheaper than that!
