  2. So if the trains north of CJ can use a third rail or overhead lines, why not use those same trains on the whole line?
  3. I would have thought it was Sound Of Silence that made Paul Simon. But the producer had to overdub drums and bass (without Paul Simon's knowledge) to make a hit out of it.
  4. A lightweight platform, using the existing ceiling joists, might be fairly simple. But you'd need to leave any cross beams supporting the roof structure in place. You'd also need to put up insulation around the roof, and board over it. And it wouldn't be strong enough to support anything but the lightest of use (i.e. no furniture). I'd really question the usefulness and financial feasibility of something like this. If you want the new floor to be able to support furniture and other heavy usage, you'd need to insert new steel (or thick wood) joists. If you want natural light, you'd need to install a velux window. By the time you've done all this, you basically have a loft conversion.
  5. I'm sure the changeover is straightforward, but I am questioning why there is a changeover at all, for what is supposed to be an orbital London line.
  6. Maybe the answer is that with any sort of hoax call or hidden camera show, you will need to get the consent of the "victim" before broadcasting it.
  7. Do we think there's any possibility of trains going straight through Clapham Junction onto Kensington Olympia in the future? Seems a little silly to stop the trains there rather than continuing through. Also, is Clapham Junction to Denmark Hill really 20-25 mins? It's only three stops, and something like 4 miles.
  8. I don't think it's OK to buy iphones/ipads for teenagers. They're very expensive items... whether or not it's too expensive to give to a child is up to the parents I guess, but the chances are that it will get lost or broken, and it will also make them targets for mugging. If I was in your position malumbu, I'd give them the choice of a basic android, blackberry, or refurbished iphone 3G (say up to the value of ?200). And tell them that if they're ungrateful, then they'll get nothing.
  9. Otta, I don't really see what's wrong with beef which is basically raw inside, as long as the quick frying is enough to kill any bacteria lurking on the outside. It's surely just a matter of cultures and personal taste. It's not really how I'd want it, but there's nothing inherently wrong with eating raw meat.
  10. These guys are right, if an electrical item gets wet, you need to take out the battery asap and dry it out thoroughly. Hopefully it's not too late!
  11. Of course everyone has sympathy for the family of Jacintha Saldanha, but I feel sorry for the DJs too. IMO they are guilty of nothing more than poor quality broadcasting and juvenile humour. To suggest that they're not genuinely upset at what happened is cynical in the extreme, and completely unfounded. This may be bullying in your book, but it isn't in mine. Bullying implies aggression or intimidation - there was none. The nurse in question was not even the butt of their joke.

But not safe for bought-in burgers, or even burgers made from standard mince. But fair enough if it's not your bag.
  15. I once had a tube driver the weekend before xmas, who gave a commentary of the best shops and attractions near each station. And a rather poetic platform announcer at Canary Wharf. "When you feel the wind blowing, the train is approaching. Do you feel the wind?"

Rail closures have been a frequent weekend fixture over the last 10 years or so. Unfortunately I can't see that changing now, especially with all the work at London Bridge.
  18. Wouldn't be surprised to see houses built instead of flats. Similar price per sq ft, cheaper build costs, and more demand.

We're all adults here, as far as I know. We know what meat is!
  20. Some people mentioned that confidential information was given obtained. As far as I can see, the only questions which were asked were "how is she", and "when did William leave". To which the answers were essentially "much better now", and "last night".
  21. To answer the original post, the Clapham thing has become a bit of a cliche, but there is some truth to it. But East Dulwich doesn't have anywhere near as many upturned-collar, rugby watching, loudmouthed wannabe toffs as Clapham.
  22. I actually guessed it too, before scrolling down to Wilhelm's answer! Huguenot's description is pretty good... the "diddley diddley" bit conveys the triplet rhythm well, followed by the "dah dah" stabs...

aquarius moon, of course people realise that meat comes from living creatures. We are comfortable with that. Condescension will not help.
  24. Some of his views are pretty unacceptable to many of us in this day and age... but I expect many of our grandparents (or even parents) could be accused of the same thing...
  25. Could we possibly summarise by saying that the new route works great for some people, but not so convenient for others?
