  1. I dunno, it just seems a bit cynical to say that there has to be a financial incentive, rather than just social benefit. DLR/Jubilee/Northern line to Battersea all had/have an element of private funding, so naturally the financials were the main driver. I guess the new London Overground routes - although admittedly far cheaper than a tube extension - would be an example of a new scheme designed to improve the overall infrastructure, without an immediately obvious economic driver. Saying that, I suppose any scheme which strengthens the transport network and allows future scalability is bound to have long term financial benefits.
  2. Where was that? I've never seen horse in a restaurant over here before. I'd have no problem eating it, but horse meat is pretty lean, so not really suitable for burgers (or "steak hache"!). But mix it with beef, and you're in business.
  3. It's always seemed a bit arbitrary to me. If you want to do/change something, just do it.
  4. There are LOADS of French working in the city... lots of quants, lots in sales and trading... your place seems like an exception rather than the rule, SJ.

  6. I don't think that the justification would have to be purely economic (or at least I'd hope not).
  7. I think nette means one of those brick built things that Jamie Oliver has in his garden (or at least, does on the TV show).
  8. Coman - wasn't my intention to be pedantic, I just remembered the jaffa cake saga... that's all. I guess it's down to distinguishing between sustenance and treats/confection/etc... the classification's always going to be pretty subjective.
  9. Richard - profits before patient care does seem to be the message they're sending out, yes.
  10. The reviews say it all: http://www.nhs.uk/Services/GP/Overview/DefaultView.aspx?id=40451 It used to be OK - but I think things got really bad when everyone left the Melbourne Grove practice, and DMC (for some reason) took on way too many patients.
  11. Coman - there's no VAT on cakes!
  12. Three problems - basements are much more expensive, much darker, and add less value.
  13. I've gone into Kings A&E with a couple of quite nasty cuts - one that required stitches, and another which just required cleaning and steri-strips. They were happy to treat them on both occasions.

I'm positive that embedding an RSJ into a party wall requires a party wall agreement! If the developer is able to fix the damage very quickly (i.e. days rather than weeks) and agrees to draw up a party wall agreement for any other similar future work, then I'd be inclined to let it go. But if he is slippery about it, you need to get in touch with the council asap.
  15. The bit with Clive Owen driving the bodies to the tar pit... after the prostitutes kill a thug, then realise he's actually a cop. Anyway, saw Django last weekend and really enjoyed it. The violence was unrealistic and didn't bother me. The use of the "N word" didn't seem out of place.
  16. I had a puncture repaired at Kwik Fit not so long ago, I think it cost me ?30 or something.
  17. Someone posted this one a couple of years back. I, naturally, took a copy of it.
  18. Pretty sure it depends upon the percentage increase of space. So if the rear section is very long, it might not get approved.

  21. Shut it, grandad!
  22. I'm not really keen on referendums, and this one is no exception. I'm not convinced that joe public has a good enough understanding of such issues.

I don't know, most Germans seem to like a piss up just as much as their British counterparts. I don't see a problem as long as nobody's disrespectful - and if they are, maybe it's time to reevaluate the company you keep!
  24. I really don't think that 1:30am on a Saturday night is a big deal, as long as it's a one off.
  25. We used one of the companies who make doors to measure. You just enter the exact dimensons (including size and location of hinge holes), and then fitting them is a piece of cake. The kind of doors you get do tend to be at the lower end of the quality spectrum (plastic heat-wrapped around MDF) but it is a fairly cheap way of making a knackered old kitchen look a lot better.
