  1. Have to admit that I hadn't looked up Wilder on Boxrec, I'd just read that he was a promising, unbeaten prospect. His record doesn't look so glorious when you look at the records of his oppponents. I'll be glad if Audley really does "turn up" and put in a decent performance. But I'd also bet money against it.
  2. If it's anything like Soif, expect it to be slightly cheaper than Franklins/Palmerston, but more expensive than eating at G&B.
  3. e-dealer - I don't think the writer, at any point, said he was glad she was dead.
  4. One part of me really admires the way he's managed to stretch out his career like this. But as a (casual) boxing fan, there's little to admire. He has absolutely no business being in the ring with this guy.

I don't think crime in ED is high generally. There does seem to have been a localised spate of break-ins recently, but crime is unfortunately a downside you have to factor in when choosing to live in a big city.
  6. Agree with JohnL and Lowlander... I've no problem speaking ill of her, she was tremendously unpopular when she was still alive, so why should that change now? But talk of celebration is pointless and rather juvenile, she'd had no influence for many years, her death doesn't suddenly make the world a better place.
  7. Di's funeral - in a lengthy rehearsal session with my (then) band, trying to learn how to play "Crash". It seemed clever at the time. Diamond Jubilee - on holiday in France (surprising amount of TV/media coverage over there, though) Olympic Opening Ceremony - on holiday in Barcelona
  8. As maxxi/alex k/tim hill say, there are certainly woodpeckers along the railway line. Anyone who lives along Quorn Rd, Ivanhoe Rd, Copleston Rd, etc will hear them every day.
  9. Good post Mick. I think it's a good time to remind ourselves how Thatcher and the Tory government badly let down vast swathes of the UK. History will not remember her kindly, and rightly so. But I won't join in all the pointless "celebrating" I see on Facebook and elsewhere... her reign ended long ago, her death changes nothing.
  10. To be honest it's been on the cards for years, and there's nothing you can say about her which hasn't been said a million times before. I'm much more interested about my sighting of Stephen Fry this morning, on London Bridge, walking a sheep on a lead.

    In Bruges

There's a good steak place called "Eetkroeg In 't Nieuw Museum". Sort of rustic pub-like vibe, meat cooked on an open fire in the middle of the dining room. Not expensive, good beers on tap. A 10 min walk from the main central/tourist area. You should probably eat there on both days. Brugs Beertje is a decent pub with a huge beer selection... it's something of an institution, and you get quite a few tourists there, but that's kind of unavoidable in Bruges.

Sue - I only read about 4 books a year, so tend to remember what I've read...

Steep Approach to Garbadale is (I think) the most recent one that I've read, and very enjoyable it was too. Matter is not an easy read. Very slow pace, and the vast numbers of made-up names of people/places/things gets pretty confusing.

I loved The Bridge. I read Canal Dreams many years ago, and I seem to remember quite enjoying it... but it's a strange book with a very slow first half, and a fairly violent/trashy end.

Really sad news. Think I preferred his non sci-fi stuff (even though I do like sci-fi), but generally liked everything of his that I read.
  16. But it's a half house... hence the alarm belongs to one side...

  18. Note that google streetview images are a bit squashed horizontally...

  20. I thought somebody would post this sooner or later! I expect a lot of people on here will qualify for the "elite" class.
  21. I dunno... I just find it a bit daft that people want to shove wood (or smokeless fuel) into a fireplace to keep warm. It's perfectly possible to get a victorian style fire surround (reclaimed or repro) with a gas burner in it. Seems much more practical to me.
  22. Check on google streetview... you might have a chance of contesting it if it's not properly signed. Otherwise... it's a fair cop I'm afraid.
  23. Well that's settled, then.
  24. You know you're getting old when you leave gigs early to avoid the rush, and you take a picnic with you.
  25. Sue, to be fair, of all the recent opinions I've read (here and on the NHS website), you seem to be the only satisfied patient. I guess the 8am queueing system works for you. For me it is unacceptable. Burbage, please edit your post and close the italics tag!
