  1. It's because they're all fucking awful.
  2. Ah, OK. I lived near there, on the Denmark Hill estate (Basingdon Way) for a while. To be fair it's not the most beautiful place to live, but it is fairly quiet... never found it dodgy or intimidating. The nearby pub - Oriwu Spot - was a bit of a dump with some characters around, but I think it's now closed.
  3. Parking is fine, as long as you don't expect to park right outside your door. edcam Wrote: ----------------------------------------------- > Used to be Peckham but now it's East Dulwich. As far as I am aware it is still in SE15 (Peckham).
  4. pipsky2008 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A 40 odd year career. 2,000,000 divided by 40 = ?50,000 PA. That is peanuts So on average, he has managed to save/accrue 50k a year, after all of his living costs. That is not peanuts, that is highly succesful. Again... a very strange thing to say. You must live in a different world to most of us.

  6. If the OP had really just moved to the area, he'd realise it was a Co-op on Lordship Lane - not Somerfield. WUM
  7. Same here - I'd finally had enough of Melbourne Grove, DMC is better in every single way.
  8. As much as I am against the CPZ, some of the things being said to/about James are clearly out of order.
  9. The development at the garden centre is common knowledge and has been discussed on this forum before. Pushing it as "car free" makes no sense, as there is no way of enforcing it. In fact, I would consider it highly irresponsible of the council to approve a block of flats without any parking spaces.
  10. Are we talking about the East Dulwich Estate (red-brick buildings on the north-east side of Dog Kennel Hill), or Champion Hill (higher up the hill, perpendicular to DKH)? They are both fine - I walk through the former every day, and have not had any issues.
  11. A man worth over ?2 million "isn't doing very well at all financially"? What a strange thing to say! It certainly sounds like a lot of money to me, but a lot of people in less important jobs manage to earn more than that. And you have to assume that a big chunk of his wealth has come from private patients (and possibly other business interests). Good luck to him... he didn't devise the system, he's just doing the best he can within it - as are most of us.
  12. Doesn't a nursery need staff (who have had the appropriate training and safety checks)? Does the building have heating, electricity and plumbing? Is it a clean, safe environment for young children? Get real!! I don't mind them squatting an unused building (I believe it's earmarked for demolition, along with much of the Broadgate estate). But to pretend it's for the good of the greater community is plainly ridiculous.
  13. CK - I appreciate you're sticking up for your mate, but most of your post is totally irrelevant.
  14. The prices on-site were the same as the CG website.
  15. Nobody is going to volunteer to run a nursery out of an empty office building in the City. The whole episode is totally absurd.
  16. I used them once - I think they're OK. You have to use some common sense, and avoid the ex-fleet cars with huge mileage. You do take a risk when buying a car at face value, so if you're not comfortable with that, you'd be better off going to a main dealer... but it will cost you a lot more.
  17. The media - and the public at large - aren't really interested in discussing constructive ways to prevent this happening again. Bankers' bonuses and students in tents make more entertaining headlines than the shortcomings of Basel-III.
  18. *Bob* Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A particularly unreassuring statistic That's what I was thinking! So if you live here for 7 years, there's a 25% chance your house will be burgled during that time...
  19. Totally agree that the solution to this mess lies in effective regulation, but to say that financial markets have very little regulation is completely untrue. As for short-selling... it's an essential tool of risk management, and I'm not convinced there's an effective way to ban "naked" shorting.
  20. Unregulated capitalism? What, as in... no regulation? Surely we do have plenty of regulation. The discussion we need is about what additional regs we need to protect our society. Not a load of cliched vagaries.
  21. red devil Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > What constitutes a 'bad tradesman' is very subjective Jeremy. One person's opinion may be subjective, but when many people provide feedback, it becomes very useful. It would be a shame if users were discouraged from sharing negative experiences. I guess if there is an ongoing legal dispute, then it shouldn't be posted on here. And it has to be factual, not personal.
  22. I expect this thread will get deleted soon. But if I can ask a serious question - what is the best way of warning others about a bad tradesman, who also happens to be a regular forum user? I understand that the original thread got out of hand (and rather personal), but in fact the trades-person in question got off rather lightly, as her real/trading name was never mentioned.
  23. StraferJack Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Anyone who uses Buddy Ackerman as a role model needs help, whatever age they are > > I've never been sure about that quote anyway - it's a bit "take the blue pill or the red pill" That's the point... Buddy was the villain, and he's trying to bring his assistant round to his cynical way of thinking. It's not supposed to be a genuine piece of advice for our friend Mr Micklewright - I was just teasing (as was Otta).
  24. Pepper spray forced into their mouths? I don't swallow that(!) But even if it is true... what does it possibly do to bolster the cause of the London protests?
