  1. Are you new to London?
  2. My wife is addicted to Twitter, and often talks about local restaurants and other food related things... @FeedTheTang
  3. He would hardly be the first "holy" man to use his position to abuse his vulnerable and impressionable followers.
  4. Isn't this really another thread about social mobility... you'll find that in a lot of areas, privately-educated, Oxbridge alumni often rise to the top. Not an ideal situation by any means - but that doesn't mean Cameron is not qualified to do his job. Hal's point is also the same basic social mobility question. If you look at the representation of Jewish pupils in private schools, you'd quite possibly find a similar story.
  5. I don't really understand why people are making up imaginary scenarios to defend what this woman did. Besides, I'm sure she has legal defence who will determine pretty quickly if this behaviour is a result of mental illness.
  6. Don't vote. Don't buy the single. Don't watch.
  7. We paid ?30 for quite a small one (maybe around 4.5ft), so maybe around ?40 would sound about right for a regular sized one.
  8. From personal experience... large IT consultancy firms, who employ tech staff around the UK. Salaries don't really vary between the M3/M4 offices (think Woking, Maidenhead, Reading, etc) and the offices in the rest of the country.
  9. Thanks James - I was hoping that the dissapearance of the "For Sale" sign meant that this was the case. It is nice to see some progress.
  10. It's not just the public sector. The difference in private sector pay often does not reflect regional living expenses either - including skilled jobs which are not in competition with the public sector.
  11. There does seem to be a small handful of people who think ED has become sort sort of Fulham equivalent (Clapham suffers from this problem acutely). These people are deluded - but nonetheless, it's a fairly pleasant corner of town. If you think its dirty, run down and shabby... you should get out and see some more of London!
  12. Very, very sorry to hear this happened to your husband. I hope the attacker gets found. Even if the the attacker was suffering some sort of mental illness (instead of the more likely explanation), he needs to be caught and dealt with appropriately.
  13. It was a bit crap. We also spent a minute on the "what if it was real" debate, before deciding it was just too ridiculous to warrant further discussion. Although the next 2 episodes look a bit more interesting, with more of a sci-fi angle.
  14. Locale pizzas are good. Gowlett pizzas are lovely. Don't need another pizza place at all, especially not a pizza hut / dominos type place. Boooo.
  15. Sounds like Martin Murray was unlucky too - I didn't see it, but sounds like he did enough to win. Still, a draw against the WBA champ isn't the end of the world, hopefull he'll get a rematch.
  16. I like texts - it's often more conveninent than a phone call.
  17. Planet Earth - the nature documentary, not the Duran Duran song.

  19. Salvation Army band out in force at London Bridge this morning... sounding rather rusty...

It seems a contradiction Not sure it's really a contradiction - hire less people into the public sector, but keep those people working for longer. If teachers don't want to teach into their late 60s (I can accept that there may be physical demands), I'm sure there is other work to do in the education department. I don't want to work until my old age either, but realistically most of us will probably have no choice.
  22. It was surely a slip of the tongue, rather than a case of being out of touch... right?

I would really avoid doing this - if I was thinking of renting a flat and this was in the contract, I would assume that it was a lazy landlord trying to shirk his responsibilities. IMO one of the advantages of renting is that somebody else is responsible for sorting out problems.

Admittedly because cost of living has been cheaper in the past, and people have been able to pay off their mortgages more easily... but then, we all have to deal with that problem. Sorry - don't understand the "you can't think out the public sector" sentence!
  25. I don't believe that modern buildings should fit the area style-wise, but this looks like it was made up as they went along, and it all went a bit wonky. They look reasonably spacious, but the huge windows mean that you'll spend your life with the blinds shut.
