How does it affect you? silverfox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The problem is it doesn't have any value, in a monetary sense. What a strange thing to say! I'm pretty sure nobody is claiming that they do. But they certainly can have other types of value, as in personal importance to the wearer, or artistic merit.
  2. steveo - greywater (i.e. non-sewage waste) filtration/recycling systems are already available, as are waste water heat recovery systems. As for the cost - it looks like it will take you around 5 years to get your money back, which doesn't sound too bad.
  3. Betterat50m - totally agree that people shouldn't walk alone at night with phone or ipod on display, but I think you're wrong to single out women. Plenty of men are also mugged. Everybody has to be careful and stay alert.
  4. UMIST doesn't exist any more, it merged with Manchester Uni. Imperial is possibly the top place for science/tech/engineering in the UK. But engineering is a broad term, you should probably find out what area interests him... civil, mechanical, electronic/tech, aerospace, chemical, etc. The "educators" you've been talking to sound rather clueless, a BEng from a good university will be well respected.
  5. I still don't think the colour's right for urine, even if the person was rather dehydrated. And all the bottles are full... does the driver keep the bottle in his car until it's full?
  6. ManOfTheCloth, are you for real, or just another hoax poster? How can anybody seriously preach to people that by protecting themselves and their families, they are committing a "sin", and that they are "damaging" themselves? And the evidence for this - an imaginative interpretation of ancient mythology. It would be laughable if it wasn't so utterly disgusting. Why is modern society tolerant of this nonsense?
  7. Sainsbury's on a Sunday evening sounds like a sensible suggestion to me - especially when it starts getting lighter in the evenings.
  8. Well in the R4 show Otta linked, John Humphry certainly implies that it is!
  9. Clearly a bright child studying CDT alongside maths and physics has a great chance of going into engineering. Surely we all agree on that, but that's not the issue. The point is that the role of a school should be to provide students with a solid academic grounding. Once pupils have finished their GCSEs, then there should be the option to carry on the academic route, or embark on a vocational education. Hairdressing training does not belong in schools, just as golf course management does not belong in universities.
  10. As a general rule, "engineering" (as I understand the term) requires a solid foundation in the sciences, so if you don't at least have a decent Maths A Level, you're not going to make it. I know that there are vocational engineering courses (BTEC?), but I think these would usually be seen as a stepping stone towards a degree, and would need to be accompanied by Maths A Level.
  11. I think the decision is right, the primary focus of a school should be academic study. Vocational subjects have their place, but you can't claim that passing tourism or retail is an equivalent acheivement to maths, science, or languages. In fact I don't even think that shool is the right place to be teaching vocational skills at all.
  12. I'm not impressed with Fury at all... lumbering, overweight... I think his towering height is the only thing going for him (but it is a big asset, granted).
  13. People have been complaining for years about the lack of safe crossing points on LL. And now the council have done something about it, guess what... more complaining!!
  14. Sue's language may have came across as rather blunt, but IMO East Dulwich is a more pleasant area with better facilities and a better mix of local businesses. I think that's reflected in the difference in price between nearby areas like Forest Hill, Sydenham, Peckham, etc. But these things are all subjective to an extent, so if you prefer living in Forest Hill, then great.
  15. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > East Dulwich will never be favoured for a Waitrose > Store because of the lack of parking. Nonsense fox, there are plenty of Waitrose stores in urban locations with limited parking.
  16. Been tentatively looking at houses recently, but good ones tend to get snapped up very, very quickly. So I assume that desirable properties must be fetching close to the asking price.
  17. Maybe somebody who works a night/early morning shift, and is always running late?
  18. The interior is really, really bad. Had a Sunday roast there once, and it was below average. steveo, you're right - if the interior was nice/trad, and the food was vaguely decent, it would be a runaway success.
  19. James Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Gotta be honest, I live locally and on the few > occasions I've ventured in I have been totally put > off by the 'regulars' - a bunch of rancid, > sneering old men. I'm not a regular, but I go now and again, and that doesn't tally with my experience at all! It's true that it's not full of dressed up 20/30 somethings like the LL bars though.
  20. I was surprised by the news story in the first place... I've briefly worked in a couple of local councils (Croydon and Westminster), and they've been probably the most diverse workplaces I've seen. Christian prayers before a meeting seems rather at odds with this. As for "live and let live"... yes I agree, but wasn't this story about organizations enforcing Christian prayer? That's hardly "live and let live", is it?! I'm all for religious freedom, but when there are powerful groups (not necessarily in this country) trying to get creationism taught in schools, or stoning women for adultery, or trying to prevent the use of contraception, there is something clearly wrong. As SJ says, "live and let live" doesn't cut it, there's a clear need to argue and fight back. Even if this means talking basic common sense in a patronizing way, i.e. Dawkins.
  21. I read an article on BBC News recently highlighting the plight of the poor, featuring a Welsh family with two unemployed parents. They had Sky TV, and bought 200 cigarettes plus a crate of beer every week. Unsurprisingly, I could not summon up much sympathy for this particular couple. I don't necessarily agree that the underprivileged don't have access to quality education - in many cases, school is what you make of it, a child should be able to do well in an inner-city comprehensive if they have the ability, and support from their parents.
  22. Well, it started going a bit pear-shaped shortly after! The 7:34 was almost 15 mins late, 7:46 delayed by an unspecified length of time.
  23. Great Brownings is a '60s built estate. Not to everybody's taste aesthetically, and not close to any sort of town centre/shops/etc, so feels rather isolated. It's certainly a very safe/quiet area though. http://imganuncios.mitula.net/great_brownings_dulwich_village_se21_7hp_93641412769427176.jpg
  24. Most British people consider the Catholic Church's stance on contraception to be utterly disgraceful. Everybody has the right to plan their families and protect their health, if they so choose.
  25. I don't think you'll find a house in Dulwich Village for that sort of money, but nearby West Dulwich, Sydenham Hill, Gypsy Hill, and Crystal Palace are all reasonable areas.
