Roll over, Godwin's Law!! We have a new topic which has become inevitable for any thread over 10 posts long.

  3. Blue bins affect crime rates. Blue bins are harmful to your mental wellbeing. It's an unforgiveable error, and the bins must be replaced. I honestly can't tell who is taking the piss and who's being serious.
  4. extra space - yes if you need an extra bedroom and possibly shower room cost - yes, you will almost certainly get your money back and more when you sell it is planning permission required - in most cases, no

I had a quick look at PC World. For the same cash you can get an HP PC, also with an i3 processor - very slightly slower, but with double the memory and double the hard drive space. I know which one I'd choose. You also have the option of going to the shop to pick it up, rather than having to take a day off work to wait for the delivery.

Sounds highly unlikely to me, what is the source of this information? As for plans to tackle crime; increase your home security by installing alarms and good locks. Mark your property. Be vigilant when walking around. Stick to busy, well-lit streets at night. Don't walk around talking on an expensive mobile phone. Don't leave bags and valuables in your car.

PC World is probably fine, as long as you stand your ground and don't buy the shitty warranty. Personally I wouldn't be tempted by an all-in-one, I'd rather have a separate monitor for the sake of repair/reuse. Dell is OK-ish, and the prices are good for the basic models (which is all you will really need). But they do load up the PC with crapware.
  11. Should really be a different price, like in Green & Blue.

  13. arsmith, there are already three Italian restaurants in East Dulwich. I agree that the Thai options are not exactly great.

I wouldn't even consider a mac, for the uses and budget that you describe. You only need a bog standard PC... maybe budget ?300 for it, plus ?100 for a fairly nice monitor.
  15. Erm... 12! I actually have nothing against a written test regarding the laws and way of life in the UK. And it also tests for a reasonable grasp of English, which is a good thing. The problem is that the questions are plainly ridiculous, and rely on memorisation of irrelevant facts from study books.
  16. Why the concern? Isn't it just a case of buying a ?25 Freeview box?
  17. I think there is a sort of smug, self-congratulatory, "we've made it" attitude amongst some people. But the problem is not nearly as serious as it is in Clapham.
  18. binary_star (and zeban) - I don't think we'll ever see a return to 100% mortgages (such practises are partly to blame for the current mess we find ourselves in). But we're returning to a situation where 10% deposits are not uncommon. I think that's about right, and should be realistic for first time buyers who save carefully.
  19. Sounds like a good business idea, Moos... while also helping to protect tenants, and rewarding good landlords.
  20. I'd recommend Des too - he did some painting for me last year, and the finish was very good. I've just booked him for some more work!
  21. Unless you have a large deposit, someone buying to let in ED will probably struggle to cover the mortgage. And as moos said, you also need to consider maintainence, buildings insurance, periods without tenants... and of course problem tenants screwing you over. It's probably still a reasonable proposition if you're cash rich.
  22. I really, really don't like The Levellers, but "What a Beautiful Day" is very catchy. Although I hate myself for it...

  24. Bad tenants vs bad landlords... I'm sure there are plenty of both. But while a bad landlord can try to fleece a tenant for hundreds/thousands of pounds, a bad tenant can refuse to pay rent, squat, or cause damage, which can easily add up to tens of thousands of pounds. It is surprisingly common, and a genuine risk if you rent out a property.
  25. If I saw anyone swirling and sniffing wine in a pub, I'd think they were pretentious and silly. Besides, the strength/age/grape are written on the bottle! All very well at a wine tasting or in a fine dining restuarant, but we're talking about cheap to mid-priced (at a push) wine, in a bar/pizzeria.
