In this scenario the money they reinvest would probably never have been paid to themselves as income.

I'm not sure that they have some sort of manifesto to support underground music, it's just the way it's sometimes worked out with the chosen panels.

  4. What do you mean by "when Jedward fall"? They're already on Big Brother.
  5. I'm all for new developments which will boost the economy, and transport has to be an integral part of that. As I mentioned, Canary Wharf would not have been possible if it wasn't for the Jubilee Line extension (partly funded by the Canary Wharf developers), and that has transformed East London and brought a lot of wealth into the UK. I am also in favour of projects which "spread out" the capital, moving commercial activities out of central London. Battersea Power Station won't be attractive as a commercial centre if you can't get there directly from Central London. It would be short-sighted to say that existing need should take a higher precendence than future need.
  6. I'm sure there have been some good singers on there, but I'm generally more interested in the music than the singer - which is why I hate X Factor so much. It has absolutely nothing to do with creativity. What the hell is "star quality", anyway?
  7. I think the conclusion KidKruger came to is an incorrect one, but I guess it's an understandable reaction to his experiences.
  8. Red bull and Jagermeister. It's very classy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A4gerbomb

  10. The BBC article is what caused me to revisit the "Inequality In Britain" thread. In theory I am in favour of the 50p bracket, as well as the VAT rise - it seems fair that cuts in services are offset to an extent by increased taxation. However, I think the main reason it hasn't brought in a lot of extra revenue is because most wealthy people have ways of obfuscating their real income. In practise, if it is not working and there is genuine evidence it is harming the economy, then reluctantly I would agree that it should be abolished. There has been a bit of discussion on here about wealth tax - I see Italy are introducing one as part of their austerity package. However, it is means tested on income, so may suffer from a similar problem.
  11. Turkey can be moist... a good quality bird, covered while roasting and basted regularly. Lots of butter. You don't need to braise it. It's quite tasty too - much more flavour than chicken (although not as tasty as duck or goose).
  12. Extremism in all its forms needs to be resisted - including creationism in schools, pro-life campaigners, violent animal rights activists, and nationalist politics. And yes, "Islamification" too - if it ever becomes a genuine issue in the UK. Don't be fooled by the EDL's smokescreen of ethnic diversity.
  13. rahrahrah, Battersea is currently no better served by public transport than ED. With the new development (including shops, a museum, offices, thousands of new homes) clearly there will be a need for extra public transport capacity. You think private developments shouldn't be served by public transport? Shouldn't we consider the boost to the economy? How about Canaray Wharf?

    Virgin broadband

oguzbir - I live just off Dog Kennel Hill. We got Virgin optic-fibre broadband (and TV) a couple of months ago. It has been generally fine and reasonably quick. But for the past two days, internet connectivity has been rather intermittent.
  15. IMO the French open letter is a media-savvy soundbite with little substance. You'll notice it contains the caveat "the contribution should not be so severe that it would provoke an exodus of the rich or increased tax avoidance". In practise it is very difficult to increase the tax burden on the wealthy without curbing entrepreneurialism and investment. Besides, most of the super-rich pay themselves low wages to avoid income tax, hold their money in offshore accounts, and all sorts of other mysterious things. It's all a bit hypocritical.
  16. Supporting the EDL's right to a voice is one thing. But as for actually defending them an as organisation - I'm shocked that it's happening on this forum. If you choose to join a group of violent nationalist yobs, I don't think it's unfair to be labelled as such.
  17. Ah, Janine Turner. If the Republican / Palin / Tea Party association didn't put you off, then the plastic surgery will. http://www.awfulplasticsurgery.com/archives/janine_turner.jpg
  18. Wouldn't mind a kindle, actually...
  19. I thought I made it clear I was opposed to religious group trying to impose their twisted values on the wider community. And yes, of course that includes the militant strands of Islam. I'm not quite sure what point you're making. Half wit with a kindle. I feel gutted.
  20. I'm not happy with the idea of people trying to push Muslim values onto the non-Muslim population. But I don't believe this is at all common, even in Tower Hamlets. And I'm certainly not comfortable with this event being used as ammunition by a bunch of lowlife thugs such as the EDL.
  21. What points are New Nexus trying to make? I'm not really sure.
  22. MM, I was referring specifically to MissNoodlesHats' post, who apparently seems to think that their views are perfectly OK. I totally agree that we can't pick-and-choose who qualifies for freedom of speech.
  23. Totally unnecessary criticism...

Sounds wonderful!
  25. We live close to some of the worst areas in London (and I'm guessing the whole country) for street robbery - many of the local bus routes travel through them. You need to be careful. Especially at night, it is a really, really bad idea to start thumbing away on your iphone at a bus stop. I think TfL should be very careful with their advice...
