  1. Shabby chic innit.

No that's not true at all. It's a generic term meaning regional/provincial/personal variations on a formal language.
  3. This LVT thing seems like a great idea if we want farms and smallholdings turned into Barratts housing estates!

I'm not sure. I don't see what's wrong with discussing links between race, poverty, and social unrest - and while I don't agree with everything Harker said, at least his intentions seem constructive.
  5. Guns Of Brixton - The Clash A-Bomb in Wardour Street - The Jam Kilburn High Road - Flogging Molly
  6. I'd say it's both racist and idiotic. But I'm surprised anyone would draw a parallel with student protests and pro-hunt campaigners.
  7. But the latest KT Tunstall CD sounds cracking through those speakers...
  8. Another Ivanhoe Rd resident here - welcome. I would have actually suggested the 1970s from the style and condition, but Vik's husband has been around here much longer than me. Looks like you'll have some new neighbours soon, as the house next door is currently being totally gutted/refurbished...
  9. My numbers are estimated - possibly exaggerated, but it points out the inherent unfairness. Your earlier wikipedia link mentions that a land value tax system is used in New South Wales - but it excludes farm land and primary residences. This would remove the problem I raised, as well as the issue of farmers (who may have inherited their land) whose profits are being continually squeezed.

There's the flaw in your logic (IMO). I probably didn't make may example clear... Let's say Fred and John both work in the City, and both earn 150K a year. Fred buys a terraced house in Dulwich for 500K, John buys a 5 bed house in north Essex, also for 500K. The land in Dulwich is worth 300K, the land in Essex is worth 100K. They both have the same income, the same outgoings, the same value of assets, the same "ability" to pay tax. But Fred pays 3 times as much tax for his property. Would you consider that to be fair?
  11. Ignoring for the moment the wealthy land-owners you're talking about, and considering the average homeowner... you can imagine a situation where two people with comparable income and assets are taxed totally differently because they live in a different part of the country. It doesn't seem right to me - nothing to do with left/right, just common sense.
  12. You would have even if Babelfish would have been improved at the duration of years.
  13. You need to get an aerial installed! There is no free Virgin service (unless you can get some sort of dodgy box online).

  15. richardbach, you broke character. Poor show. Although "Godron" gets the thumbs up, I like that. No such problem for MissNoodlesHats. Anyway, I don't think the physical delivery will be a problem on this occasion. The BoE should be fine, the banks can buy physical gold from the market to deliver if necessary. The real problem will come if this is just the start on a scramble for physical gold. As for credit ratings - I thought these were based on a government's ability to pay bond coupons, but happy to be corrected if this is not the case.
  16. David, isn't there a fundamental problem, in that the ratio of property to land value differs vastly throughout the country. You might spend 500K on a terrace house in south London, and be sitting on 300K of land. Spend 500K on a house in Northumberland, the land might possibly be worth around 50K. In short - it's not a reflection of what the owner is able to contribute.
  17. I've only been in there once, when it first opened. I was asked for ID. I am 34 years old.
  18. boom boom Seriously, the UK doesn't have food shortages, or 30% inflation (60% inflation of food and healthcare).

  20. As mentioned in your second article - he's doing it so their gold can't be seized when the forthcoming international arbitrations don't go his way. You can't just boot out foreign businesses Mugabi-style, and expect to get away with it. Also their cost of borrowing is very very high, and apparently they have to provide gold to China to guarantee their loans. Let's not kid ourselves that Venezuela are the good guys with a rock solid economy. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this was just the start of a rush for physical gold, as futures become undeliverable. There's a huge demand for gold right now, and supply can't keep up.

Catatonia with a selection of M&S "tapas" dishes. A spot of Basement Jaxx - or perhaps Too Many DJs - with a bottle of ready-mixed mojito.
  23. Yep, drinking and driving obviously not a good idea... but personally I feel uneasy on Rye Lane late at night, and always have done. A situation not helped by the fact that last time I went there the lift was out of action, and got thoroughly lost in that car park, which is frankly a pretty disgusting place. Nothing against the bar itself. But the location is not for me.

  25. The Starkey/Ringo joke made me chuckle, I have to admit.
