  1. Apparently you can get 'paintballs' filled with capsaicin solution (pepper spray), which have previously been used in riot control.
  2. Paintballs... I actually quite like that idea. Aside from marking/identification, they hurt, they're less harmful than baton rounds, and very cheap.
  3. It was a joke... Snorky having a satirical pop at his fellow Dulwich residents.
  4. I don't think it matters whether he fired or not. If he even drew his weapon, the police would need to fire back straight away. Anyone remember Harry Stanley? Shot dead by the police, carrying a table leg, which police mistook for a gun. And of course, Jean Charles de Menezes. Innocent men minding their own business, tragically, pointlessly killed. Duggan, on the other hand, was an armed criminal. Edited to add - any loss of life is tragic, and any fatal police shooting should be thoroughly investigated. I just think we need to put this into context.
  5. If they manage to get their act together, get an education and some qualifications... yes I'd like to think I would. Most of them looked very young, and I don't believe in writing individuals off.
  6. Community service sounds like an excellent idea - as long as the number of hours is up in the thousands. We can't start preventing child criminals from receiving benefits in the future, the repercussions could be disastrous. But in answer to the question "how are they going to eat with no legal source of income"... one radical idea might be to get something called a "job", which can provide an income to cover essentials such as fried chicken, trainers, and xbox games. In order to prepare for this, they might want to consider occasionally attending something known as a "school".

Killzone 3? (actually that's what I'm playing at the moment, but I didn't nick it, honest...)
  8. Let's get rid of all the idiotic fucks. Then get rid of the self-important, worthy fucks. And the patronising fucks who think they're more clever than everyone else. And the annoying, trolling fucks - and anyone who posts "in character". How many posters will we have left?
  9. Atticus - don't you think it's a bit too heavy??
  10. This was not a normal case. Firstly, the guy was killed by the police - something that only happens a couple of times a year, so automatically high profile. Also, he was a wanted man, so his family were trying to clear his name. I don't agree at all that this is indicative of a wider trend of public mourning. He was a gangster. He was armed. Decent, innocent people die every day - Mark Duggan was not one of them.
  11. Business as usual tomorrow, please. The kids are all busy at home playing all the xbox games they stole. I understand that Portal 2 takes a couple of weeks to complete, so we should be safe for a while.
  12. It's all over. The kids have had their fun, and upgraded their trainers. They've stocked up on xbox games. Now the police have gathered ranks, they've called it quits. Nothing further to see here.

  15. Can we get posts/threads removed which contain these rumours? As others have said, there is a danger that they will become self-fulfilling.
  16. DinkyToy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If it is proved Duggen did not fire a weapon then > all hell WILL break loose. I doubt it. Most of the people rioting and stealing probably couldn't care less about Duggan.

Magpie Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Couple of points to touch on here - water cannons, > rubber bullets etc are not authorised for use on > mainland Britain Not sure about water cannons. Baton rounds are used regularly by UK police, and would be entirely appropriate in a situation where a large mob is charging at police and throwing bricks/bottles.

Yes, it's not Etonians from Hampstead. But again, that doesn't make this politically motivated. Delinquent youths/gangs do usually (not always) come from poorer backgrounds - does that make every mugging or stabbing a political statement?

I buy this to an extent. An overall sense of negativity and social unease have possibly contributed to all of this, especially when there have been riots and demonstrations all around the world for various reasons. It's not the same thing as a politicial motive though, these kids are not demonstrating, they have no cause.
  21. I agree with Santerme, deploying the army is a bad idea. They're not trained to deal with this sort of situation, they're trained for armed combat. Although perhaps they could assist at a logisitical level. Tear gas - why not, as long as fair notice is given?
  22. I'd be OK with water cannons, tear gas, etc. Even baton rounds, maybe. Give people fair warning that these measures will be used.
  23. If they faced a bleak future before, they face an even bleaker one now with a criminal record. Zero sympathy.

  25. Is this just a natural result of a society which has increasingly lived in fear of its youth? Grown men and women are afraid to stand up to 14 yr old children, and we've reached the point where they think they can do whatever they want. Perhaps we're paying the price for our own cowardice.
